Phil Butler Photography Q&A
What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
That old saying of "Luck is What Happens When Preparation Meets Opportunity" comes to mind. The best photos just seem to happen, so I've learned over the years to always have my camera at arm's reach. I've painstakingly prepared for shoots only to have the weather ruin everything. As a photographer you often have to improvise and work with whatever conditions you have (unless you are in the studio and can control everything).
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Communication is key. The more the better. You should ask about time, location, desired shots, etc. The more you can tell someone about what you want, the more likely you and the photographer will be able to work together to make your vision happen.
What do you love most about your job?
How happy clients are when they get their photos back. I love seeing them change their profile pictures on social media. That's how I know they love it. It's very rewarding to go on to LinkedIn and see so many of my connections are using photos I took as their first impression to the world.
What inspired you to start your own business?
This is going to sound trivial, but I really really needed a new computer and I couldn't afford one. So I decided to monetize my photography "hobby" for some extra money and before I knew it I had the money for the computer. Clients keep coming, so I keep snapping photos.
Why should our clients choose you?
I know getting your picture taken can be uncomfortable for some people so I really strive to make my sessions light and fun. I feel like time flies during shoots because of it. I also want every client to love their photos so I'm willing to do what ever that takes. I want my clients to be as hands on or as hands off as they'd like during the process.
