Paul Atchison Design Q&A
What makes a great website?
Content is key for websites but also clear and simple navigation, a strong image of what your company/product does of provides, grabbing the attention of your potential customers within the first 5 seconds and for it to be responsive to all platforms, work well on mobile etc.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Describe your business in 3 words, what is you customer demographic? Who are you competitors? Where will your logo mainly be seen? Do you have any personal connection to your logo/brand? What is your timescale/deadline. Do you have a budget in mind? Do you have any assets already? Have you seen anything in a similar industry that you like?
Describe your creative process.
I now always start with plenty of sketches and research, if I know lots about the product or service then great, if not I read up lots and live it for a day at least to try to get a better understanding of my direction. After showing the client a few sketches in a meeting and agreeing on a direction I will sit at the computer. Then I will develop the ideas and then present the worked up versions to the client. After discussion I will develop one of these worked up directions and then summit for feedback. After changes I will then provide the client with and they need.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
As per the questions I would ask I would need to know any existing assets they have, who the design is going to be viewed by, who does something similar, are there any favourite colours etc.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the challenge of something being presented to me (whatever that may be) and being able to push myself every time to produce quality work. I also love working with startup companies and helping them become successful and look great at the same time, going through all that myself reminds me of how exciting it can be.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I remember having a career interview at school and I said I wanted to be in the creative arts (it was all I was good at!) but didn't really know what, graphic designer was something I was told to pursue but didn't really know what was involved. After many years of various art and design courses I actually did a degree in furniture design, after that though I felt I should actually follow my real passion and started my path to being a graphic designer. It's been a long 10 year journey but I have worked on 100s of projects with massively wide range of clients and now feel I produce a very high standard of work with a strong understanding of the branding/identity process especially. I think if you are really passionate about something nothing will stop you doing it and now I know it's many years of hard work, constant learning and blood, sweat and maybe a few tears that makes a good designer.
Why should our clients choose you?
See above. I do this because I love it and really care that you get something you're happy with and that works best for your company or product.
