I would recommend a room overlooking the river as it is well worth the extra expense for the view. The standard of this hotel with its old world charm and attentive polite service is very high indeed. Its nearness to the town centre makes it a perfect destination for some retail therapy. More...

Yet again we stayed for a few nights at the Imperial to enjoy the Christmas lights and general atmosphere. The hotel is impressively positioned on the river Torridge and is no more than a few moments walk from the Barnstaple town centre. The hotel catering is excellent with varied meals at all time of the day. Equally, the staff are very pleasant and nothing is too much for them. Wanted somewhere to stay in Barnstaple for a couple of nights. Found the Imperial on the web. A great hotel with our room overlooking the estuary. Lovely hotel. Beautiful room. Superb restaurant with friendly, helpful, professional waiting staff. ||Only problem was the heating apparently wasn’t timed to come on until 4. 30pm which meant customers we spoke to who had spent the afternoon sitting in the lounge were cold.||We asked for an extra heater for our room when the heating wasn’t on and one was provided. ||I did think it was a little short sighted only providing a bottle of water in the room for the first night! ||If there was a different customer in the room each night then they would provide a bottle of water each night. I’m afraid in a good hotel I find that rather sad. ||There was also a very strong smell of paint in the hall way in the part of the hotel we were in. Fortunately we couldn’t smell it once we had gone into our room.||Information on how the shower worked would have been helpful. More...

We stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of the month as we have been doing for many years. We have actually been coming to the Imperial for many years and sometimes twice a year. It never fails to deliver and it's so lovely to see all the staff who always greet us and treat us like friends which we feel they are to us. We had a terrible weekend, weather wise and for the first time in years were unable to get out much on the Saturday. However with warm and comfortable rooms, it didn't matter at all. The food was absolutely fantastic, better than ever with every course of every meal, being delicious and top quality served by such professional staff who are obviously very highly trained. Only one small niggle, I wish the after dinner coffee was a bit stronger.!!! All in all though, a wonderful few days and we will be booking up for the Spring. Thanks to all of you. More...

We have stayed at this hotel many times. We did think this time that the food was not as good as before. The menu seems less adventurous for all four courses. Yes, when it comes the food is cooked well, but it did not excite us this time, and there were some errors. I had Pork Wellington one day expecting the pastry to be crisp - it was soggy. One night my wife had Salted Caramel Tart - the caramel layer was so solid a fork could barely penetrate a couple of millimetres. I accept that for many guests plain food perfectly cooked is all they require, and staple food should be on the menu, but surely there should be a few more exciting dishes as well?||||The accomodation is very comfortable, the staff are excellent - attentive without being intrusive - parking is good - especially if you qualify for a disabled parking cone, getting a guaranteed space.||||We will be back, but hope that the food returns to the high quality we experienced previously. This is an old comfortable hotel in the centre of town. Check in was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful - always a good sign. The room we had was clean and comfortable (and kept that way). Toiletries were good and replenished during our stay. The room was very hot on arrival and the window locked. We found that most of the heat was generated by the towel rail which was untouchable. Turning all radiators off had the desired effect slowly.||Breakfast was good with the hot costing £14pp so quite an addition if your rate does not include it. ||The major surprise was the £15 per day car parking charge so please be aware if you are driving - it may be cheaper in one of the local car parks (one alongside the hotel).||However throughout the staff were delightful. This was our third visit to this hotel. |We had booked by telephone and the process was quick and easy.|We drove to the hotel and it is difficult to access although our satnav performed well. |The reception in the hotel was good and we were given all of the necessary information. Whilst we were offered help with our cases we would have had to wait for someone to arrive. |Our room was accessed via the lift and up a short flight of stairs. It was reasonably large and had two windows over-looking the river, a pleasant room.|We didn’t use the bar on this visit but sat in the lounge and were served our pre-dinner drinks.|All of the staff in the lounge and the dining room were pleasant and all had good conversation skills although there was one member who appeared to be a little austere, but efficient. Overall the staff were efficient and pleasant.|The food at both breakfast and dinner was good but I was left with the feeling that it was not quite as good as on my previous visits. |One off-putting item is the constant request to sign for drinks order, but this is excellent for the administration of the hotel. |Overall this is a pleasant and efficient hotel but during our stay there seemed to be a lot of guests who were regular visitors and they seemed to get special attention, sometimes to the detriment of the other guests.|Would we visit again, probably because we like Barnstaple.| More...
