Updating my review to reflect the new location right next to the Flower Market. If you're looking at photos, the new space is the one with black walls with Hello Kitty & Chun-Li painted on the wall. Ignore any photos with white walls with a red stripe. This is a large space with everything you need for powerlifting & weightlifting. 4 bench racks, 3 deadlift platforms, 4 power racks (mostly for squats), ER rack for squat/bench, and 4 weightlifting platforms. There's plenty of barbells, bumper and metal plates mostly in kilos. There's also some dumbbells, a GHD, plenty of resistance bands, lacrosse balls and foam rollers for mobility work.Linda, the owner & head coach is someone I can't imagine life without. She really cares about your success and goals. She's worked with people at all levels from novice to national level lifters, so please don't talk yourself out of giving lifting weights a try just because you're new! The other coaches Jackie, Patrick, & Steve are also great people and I really enjoy attending their classes too and always learn something new.A note about classes: it's not like the group fitness classes you take at regular gyms or Barry's. Essentially each class meets 2-3 times a week and each day focuses on a particular movement as part of a long multi-week program usually designed to increase strength. As an example, Monday would cover squats, accessory work and some conditioning at the end. Everyone lifts at their own level so someone could be lifting 50kg while another can be loading up 150kg. Over the weeks you should expect to lift heavier weights each time and test your 1 rep max at the end of each program. Rinse, repeat and enjoy your newfound strength!Fellow gym members take lifting seriously but are also very friendly, open to being a spotter if you need one and I've made several friends here too. Seriously, no douchey gym bros here. And as always, this gym is VERY women friendly! If you drive, there's metered and unmetered street parking nearby, no comment on availability of said spaces when you need them though! The gym is also close to several bus lines and the 4th & King Caltrain stop. More...

I've been going to Linda's gym since 2017 and the coaching there is incredible! Linda is tough, but fair and pushes me to be better. It is also a very female friendly gym and everyone is very supportive. The gym is so much nicer at the new location! It is much larger, has lockers for rent, has cubbies for storage space. On hot SF days, the gym is much cooler inside than outside. More...

One of the most welcoming gym atmospheres I've ever experienced. Here you will almost always have a partner – you get paired up with someone with similar height and strength. I'm a beginner, and feel that Linda and Queene are always keeping a good eye on us, and are quick to make corrections and suggestions. The key thing is safety though. You will get trained properly not only for how things should be done, but how things should be done for YOU — if you have an old injury, was recently sick, or missed a few classes, etc. adjustments will be made. In 6 short weeks, going only twice a week, I've gotten stronger and have better posture (I'm an office worker) .Bring a friendly attitude, show up on time, and join us! More...

This gym rules.  Dropped in twice while I was in town for work and immediately felt at home.  Drop in fee isn't any higher than other gyms in the area, lots of kg/lbs plates (metal and bumpers), tons of platforms and Linda was very chill about dropping in regardless if there's a class going on.  If you're looking for machines/cables/etc, go somewhere else.  If you want someone who knows what they're doing to be honest and look at your form, come here. Dropped in here and had a great experience. I would probably recommend that most lifters just do open gym as a drop in, just because coaching is so minimal if you're only there for a day or a week, plus is $15 cheaper. The biggest plus is that is extremely female friendly, a rarity with lifting! There were people there of all experience levels, and some had a powerlifting focus, while others weightlifting. Their equipment was all really nice - the bars specifically were incredibly nice. The space is VERY small - I shared a mat with someone else to get my lifting done. I did their programming for the day (Olympic lifting / Snatch focused) and thought it was good for drilling technique in lifts.Overall - a great experience but I would probably do open gym to save some money next time. $35 is a lot to shell out for a class with minimal position coaching - but it was exactly what I needed after a day of travel. I'm not sure how to describe the magnitude of the changes in my life since I met Linda and joined her gym back in April 2017, suffice to say I'm three quarters of the woman I used to be. I dropped 30 lbs since my first work out with Linda seven month ago and my body changed in ways I didn't believe possible without surgery, maybe even then. Linda's expertise and dedication to her gym, her craft and her 'family' of clients and friends is unparalleled. I've had the good fortune to have been able to afford a personal trainer at many junctures in my life, and have been a member of some of the most expensive gyms in San Francisco. None offered me what OpenGymSF gave me, without the fluff pretense or attitude. She and John are dedicated to helping anyone that wants it find their inner superhuman self. Just good people helping other good people find what they didn't know they had in them. Come check it out! More...

Open Gym SF has changed my life!!!Linda and John are amazing coaches who are incredibly knowledgeable and have a deep understanding of lifting. I highly recommend the powerlifting or weightlifting classes. They are small group classes, which means you'll get really personal, nearly 1:1 coaching without paying high personal trainer prices. When I joined, I didn't know anything about lifting. I had been working out at a big, commercial gym doing light weights and a lot of cardio with only average results. Now, I can squat 2x my bodyweight, have lost 10 pounds while gaining muscle, am proud of how my body looks, and most importantly, I feel amazing about what I've accomplished here!Pro-tips:1. Don't be turned off by the high monthly membership fee. Considering the membership fee is the same cost as 2-3 personal training sessions, this is a deal. The coaches offer very personal attention and are able to give me personalized programming to work on areas I need more help on. The value of your monthly membership honestly pays for itself in about a week.2. The hours are somewhat limited. Don't worry though! The coaches are willing to work with your schedule to make it work! I've definitely done powerlifting during Olympic lifting class, and as long as you are respectful of the classmates, it works out. Linda has taught me everything I know about lifting over the years I've been training with her and I'm still learning! I'm so happy she has her own gym now. I've been following her powerlifting program for the last few months and I am consistently setting new personal records. This gym has 2 platforms, 2 squat/bench racks and 2 more spaces on the gym floor to do your lifts. There's a set of dumbbells, kettlebells, a roman chair for back extensions and TRX for any accessory work. There's also a stretching and foam rolling area too.The classes at the gym are pretty small and I usually have the squat rack all to myself for the duration of the class. People are pretty good about sharing the platforms when needed. Everyone I've met at the gym have been super nice and supportive. The location is right in-between Civic Center and Powell MUNI/BART stations. While the corner of Market & 6th isn't the best, Linda has always let me into the building in a timely manner. Also the building is good about keeping people from hanging out in the entryway.Overall, I can't imagine working out anywhere else and highly recommend you check it out whether you're a beginner who is curious about lifting or a seasoned lifter who needs a gym to call home. I started working with Linda one-on-one a month and a half ago. I used to do a lot of HIIT/boot camp type of stuff, and then started getting into weightlifting, mainly deadlift/bench/squat (kind of on and off). I knew I really liked weightlifting but I was plateauing a lot and had trouble sticking to a regular program, so I was looking for someone to really help me work from the ground up -- perfect my form, get a really solid foundation, and stick to a regimen of some sort to really start growing and moving up. Plus, I was tired of working out at a gym swarming w/ bros and having to wait for a rack all the time (even when there are already 4 of them...)Linda is the PERFECT person for me to work with. We started from the very beginning, focusing on endurance and proper form so I could get a solid foundation. My form is so much better after working with her, my core is a lot stronger, I feel way more solid, and after a month and a half I'm PRing on all my lifts, vs the 6-8 ish months I spent trying to do it myself. We just started working on some lifts that are a bit tougher for me, but Linda's really great at coaching me through them, making sure I have the right form down before trying to move up. She's super encouraging but no-bullshit and I like that about her. I'm really excited about all the progress I'm making and feel like a badass whenever I hit a new PR. Plus her new gym is really open, spacious, and comfortable and in a really convenient location. I'm really glad I started working with Linda, and although I'm still early on in my lifting 'career', she works with and trains a lot of people who do competitions and are in higher weight classes. So I would say that if you're looking for someone to help you with your lifts, no matter what stage you're at, definitely work with Linda. More...
