Olmsted Photography Q&A
What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
For me, I have an advantage to other photographers as I am also a model. It is important to understand how it feels to be not only behind the camera, but also in front of it. Being a model has helped me help my clients feel comfortable in front of a camera, which is very important to taking a great photograph. Not only that, but I am constantly bettering myself and improving my work. I didn't hit a point where I was happy with my work and then stopped reviewing the basics. As for actually taking a great photograph, I constantly hold myself to high standards for my work. I am the opposite of a perfectionist when it comes to literally everything except photography. I take hundreds of photos during a shoot and I will not leave the shoot until I am happy with my work. Many photographers will just point the camera but not pay attention to the little things that could make the photo a hundred times better, even if these are things that someone who isn't a photographer wouldn't notice.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I love getting to know my clients and becoming friends with them before starting the project. Since not everyone is comfortable in front of a camera, especially one in a stranger's hands, it is important to not only get them comfortable in front of the camera but to get them comfortable around you. When doing portraits or senior photos, I usually ask about the clients hobbies, personality, what they consider their style, and many more questions until I feel I know them enough to convey them in a photograph properly. Similarly, for families, I like to get to know each one of them and the role they play in the family, their personality, and relationships within the family that would make an amazing photograph.
What do you love most about your job?
The thing I love most about photography is that it doesn't feel like a job. When I get behind my camera, that is one of my favorite places to be. My favorite feeling in the world is taking a photograph that I can just feel is amazing and barely being able to wait to rush home and edit it. I love getting to meet new people and have my work environment be in many different places, like outdoors, at a pumpkin patch, at someones home, or at a park, just to name a few. Although there are many hours spent behind a computer in post-production, I also get to spend some of the hours of my "job" photographing some of my client's happiest memories.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Ever since I could walk and talk, I was starting my own businesses, even if they were just for my family. From a movie theater in the living room, to an ice cream shop in the kitchen, owning a business always fascinated me. I have been interested in photography since I was about 10, and business my whole life, so it only made sense to combine the two.
Why should our clients choose you?
Clients should choose Olmsted Photography, not only for the amazing prices and high quality of images, but to choose a photographer that they can keep coming back to for future shoots for years to come. I love getting close to my clients so that they know in another year or two, it is obvious who they want to take their next round of family photos. Olmsted Photography has only been around for a little over a year, but my dream is to take someones senior photos, and when the time comes for their wedding photos, and then their baby's photos, then their family photos, that they know exactly who to choose. Photography is something that is very important to me, and I don't consider it my job, but rather my closest friend. It is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing and it fills me with excitement just thinking about it and how much I love doing it. Not only that, but I love when anyone chooses my business they are supporting a young artist. At 17, I am much younger than many other photographers that are similar to me.
