Stopped in to stock up on my return to nearby Owego for an artist residency. I'd emailed ahead to see if I could pick up organic legumes and rices in bulk while I was waiting to catch the Short Line bus. I hadn't expected to find poultry or meat at all but in addition to sausages and different cuts of beef, pork, and lamb, plus whole chickens, on offer were frozen venison, elk, and buffalo, sold ground or as stew meat. Bonus! There was a smartly chosen range of cheeses, some produce, freshly roasted coffee beans, and shelves full of jams, jellies, pickles, and other preserves in jars. As you'd guess from the name there are plenty of gluten-free breads, pastries, and baking items. I would've liked to have been able to pick up a bag of standard flour and a loaf of whole grain bread but I understand that's not Old Barn Market's mission.Remarkable they can carry so many things in a rather compact space. Friendly & helpful staff, too! Well-worth a detour. More...

I never realized you had such a great selection of gluten free AND dairy free goodies until recently! My sister was just placed on a GF/DF diet and we’ve been struggling to find spots downtown that accommodate this. We took one bite of the snickerdoodles and were in awe! I could spend ALL my money HERE, but I never remember to go. :( Thanks to an Instagram post, I made it in today to get a GF donut. So many fantastic, local products. We love Old Barn Market!! My kids ask on a daily basis to go get a treat or snack or even to "draw and color on the floor with chalk. " The staff is always very welcoming even when my twin boys are a little on the loud side for 4 year olds. The gluten free baked goods are amazing and the produce is always amazing! Glad we have such a great place like this in town. More...

I like thinking of Old Barn Market as a righteous grocery store, in the class of Side Hill Farms in Manlius. Yet, the difference between OBM and SHF is a matter of degree than kind. SHF moves the fresh lamb, chicken and beef so much faster than OBM because SHF does butchering and charcuterie on the premises, right before the eyes of the customer. And the butchers are going to be butchers at SHF for life. There's no reason for those gals and guys to go anywhere else. Like I said, OBM is a righteous grocery store, but it has a freezer locker mentality. I didn't really look at the meat lockers because I couldn't identify the meats at a glance. I would have to read the labels. I loved how the jams, honeys and other products were celebrated, but I wouldn't detect a bakery by the lovely scent of baking bread at OBM. Show the bakers. Show the butchers. Let us watch them work. Get the staff out circulating in the aisles.Really was intrigued by the OBM story, and I could imagine a self-reliant baker living in the hills with her true loves. I could see the coffee was branded OBM. But I couldn't fill in all the pieces of the story. So much was fresh. So much was right. And I loved the support of local arts and crafts by displaying items locally made by local artisans, marked of sale. I noticed that C.S.A.s had access to the market for selling shares, too. However, I noticed a package of donuts with evidence of freezer burn. Somehow, those freezers have to be made friendlier. Side Hill does a good job of that.I wanted a cool, righteous ginger soda or cherry stomp from that place in Seneca Lake, but I can't remember seeing a drink cooler just for the impulse buying. You'll find a lot of fine and interesting mainly fresh items here. Eggs, for example, are sourced by local farms doing their best. Same is true for local crafts-sorts, creating some authentic gift ideas. Some particular items, like duckling, are frozen. One of the items in the front are jams, which really are terrific, and are a fiver apiece. Justifiably, on the one hand, sustainability, local quality and personal service from the staff is each a mission here. On the other hand, I need to remove just one star for the lack of general affordability for the average downtowner. Just the same, their endeavor is well appreciated, and I'll be very happy to continue to see what's new every week or so. More...
