Apologies for such a long review!
I would recommend not having anything to do with Lee and Oakwood Tree Care & Landscapes.
This is what happened when I dealt with this 'professional' service.
He was asked to give an estimate on reducing the height of a pine tree by some feet. I explained this was to make the tree safer in the high winds we have been having recently and was for insurance purposes.
Rather than giving any advice on the tree, Lee very quickly entered into haggling about the price, along the lines of 'what is your budget/how much can you pay' and so on. Apparently 'everyone knows what everyone else charges'. 'You would not get this for less than £700', etc. Did I want the cuttings disposed of – that would be extra as a chipping machine cost £200 a day to rent (though he had one in tow behind his lorry.)
In the end, we reached a price. I thought it was a bit high but did want the work done and out of the way. I hoped a locally based trader might be trusted. His hand quickly came out to shake on it (probably a warning in itself – nothing in writing.)
I said I would pay cash and nipped to the bank. I expected the job to take a morning or a couple of hours at least, picturing the use of ropes and safety gear for a tree 40 feet high. I was surprised to get back from the bank, after just 20 minutes, to see Lee and his assistant Pete already putting their gear back on the lorry. No safety gear appears to have been involved, just a tall ladder and a chain saw. The total job had taken half an hour.
I asked Lee for a receipt. He didn't have a pen handy so I wrote out a note myself which he printed his name on. Not his surname mind, just 'Lee' in capitals.
As he left, he told me that if I changed my mind about clearing the cuttings, he 'might be able to do a deal'.
Things got worse though. As this was for insurance I felt the receipt needed to be more than this and phoned him a week later to ask for a proper office receipt that the insurance company would recognise. He claimed not to know about the work. I reminded him about the pine tree at my address. Apparently, in the week since the work, he had done loads of pine trees and couldn't recall this one. I heard him asking Emily if I was on 'Bark' to which she replied no. Clearly they did know about the work as he came back to the phone and said he would send a receipt. By email and it would be in two weeks (they have 'dozens' which apparently get sent out all at once.) Emily had previously told me it would be put in the post.
Without a proper receipt, the point of the work is pretty much worthless for insurance purposes. In addition, a large branch was cut off but not thrown down to the ground. It is resting across the top of the tree and is not only unsightly but will fall at some point. Pine branches are surprisingly heavy and this will cause injury if it hits someone. It is too high to reach and must have been visible to both Lee and Pete as they did the work.
It is highly unprofessional to leave a workplace unsafe and I am wondering whether to contact Trading Standards about it. It leaves me with a liability and I will likely have to pay a proper professional to go up and make it safe, as well as getting a properly dated report on the tree's condition for insurance purposes.
I can clear the cuttings which did reach the ground myself but was saddened to read a review by a customer too elderly to clear up after Lee. There also appear to other reviewers less than happy about the price.
So, I advise you to look at Norfolk County Council's Trusted Trader scheme and find someone who has more interest in your tree than they do in how much they can make from you. Get a couple of estimates. Don't pay cash and get it all in writing. Take photos before and after. A professional service will be happy to do things that way. I don't feel I have dealt with a professional service in this case but I suppose you live and learn.
