What kind of accounting services do you provide?

I become part of a client's team, generally acting as CFO and typically visit clients between 2 -4 per month. I provide all financial management and accounting services, including filing annual accounts and corporation tax returns, so no need for external accountants to do this work. I also act as Company Secretary for clients. With a new client I review the current finance department operation and propose improvements where required. I will develop the management reporting and KPIs to the extent that the client can see the financial impact of executive decisions, both past and future. Cash management is a very high priority for most SMEs and I develop robust cash forecasting and monitoring to ensure no surprises. Credit control is an important element of this. I assist the management team with operational and strategic issues. I'm an expert financial modeller and prepare forecasts and budgets that the client can rely on. I have vast experience in the Angel investment sector, both as an investor on behalf of a private investment company and as a partner in a corporate fiancé house.

Why is it so important for businesses to hire a great accountant?

A good accountant will ensure a complete understanding of the client's business and dynamics and will develop a financial reporting and control structure that gives the management team the information it needs to understand its financial position and to make the right decisions.

What do you love most about your job?

I enjoy the satisfaction of developing a client's financial function to the point where the accounts are accurate and the management information reflects the reality of the business and forms the basis for credible decision making.

What inspired you to start your own business?

It evolved from an amalgamation of all of my skills, 30 years experience in commercial financial management, time spent as an Angel investor and fund raiser, financial modelling using industry leading techniques, a number of years as a portfolio finance director and preparing and filing annual accounts and CT600s.

I am mobile, flexible, home based so cost effective. I get on well with people and am conscious of the concerns that incumbent finance staff may have when a finance professional arrives. I take the time to understand the dynamics of the client company and its culture. I add value to the organisation, and usually save more than I cost. As an example, by generating credible and informative management accounts and KPIs a clients margin went from 42% to 54% for no other reason than the areas of overspent and inefficiency were now visible.

The company operates a VW Camper Van rental business in France and Spain. My responsibilities were to manage the company's financial reporting and forecasting, liaising with institutions such as leasing companies and HMRC and to ensure accurate business and cash forecasting.
