When you travel a lot, it's hard to put your finger on what makes a place extra special and unforgettable. Oak House #1 does it all. Nicola and Gary cared for my partner and me long before our arrival. I was proposed to during the weekend stay, and they helped to concoct a beautiful surprise for me! (Very clever.) Aside from that, the house is stylish, comfortable, impeccable and clean, every piece of eclectic art has a narrative and a story, Nic and Gary offer generous and fulfilling food, local travel advice, attention to detail and to guest needs, good humor, and their own stories of global travels. They knit together a feeling of cheerful community among the guests, not too much, not too little. We tell everyone about Oak House and can't wait to go back. More...

We wanted somewhere extra special to celebrate a birthday and through our detailed UK searches found the Koh-i-Noor of boutique hotels, which just so happened to be in part of the country we adore, Tetbury. And what a gem of an establishment this turned out to be - made all the more special by the splendid couple that run it. Oak House and its owners Gary & Nicola are simply magical - No 1 it most certainly is. More...

Gary and Nicola are truly wonderful hosts and they’ve created a B&B to remember. We stayed in the Prince’s suite which was very comfortable. Next time I think I would opt for the Cavalier Suite with it’s totally separate sitting room but either way the furnishings and artwork are tasteful, intriguing, and enjoyable. If you’re worried, it’s not over the top. It is cosy, warm, inviting, upscale, yet informal. The furnishings were collected by Nicola and Gary during their wide ranging travels. There is a very pleasant garden out back which we saw but didn’t take advantage of. Very, very comfortable beds. If you do stay here you won’t soon forget it!||Specifics: your GPS may be confused. Park in the Chippings car park. Oak House fronts on it but don’t worry. Once you enter the front door you’ll quickly forget the car park. Oak House is literally steps from High Street. Right now The Close Hotel (less than a block away) is the place to eat. We had tea (wine) in their garden which is another great story. Oak House doesn’t have a liquor license but there is an excellent wine store literally next door. More...

This was a really difficult one to rate. The place is lovely - very interesting, a bit quirky, and with a very impressive collection of art all over the house. The hosts are delightful - the charismatic Gary and the delightful Nicola were chatty, amiable, interesting and helpful. Nicola’s baking is wonderful, and the breakfasts were fabulous. ||So why am I not awarding this place 5 stars? Well, there was the small matter of the hot water not working ie there was no hot water! Fair play to Gary and Nicola - they were upfront from the start (not that they could have hidden it for long!), they were clearly embarrassed, and they did their best to compensate by boiling up pans of water in the old-fashioned way. But giving a reasonably expensive hotel/B&B five stars when there was no hot water just wouldn’t be right. But the real downer for me came at the end, when we left, when we were offered, by way of compensation, to come back in the future at a 50% discount. Given that we had suffered the (not inconsiderable) drawback of no hot water on this visit, we thought that it wasn’t really on to ‘defer’ the compensation gesture to some future occasion (especially when we don’t live nearby). We said that we weren’t really happy with that, and, in fairness to them, Gary and Nicola swiftly offered a perfectly fair discount of £100 from this visit, but it just rankled that their first offer had been such a poor one. It left us with a bit of a sour taste in our mouths - which was a pity, really, because in all other respects it was a great experience. More...

They have cleverly and meticulously curated every piece to be celebrated in all it's glory. ||We stayed in the Cavalier suite which has 3 rooms, a gorgeous and comfortable bedroom with 4 poster bed, a relaxing sitting room (the library) and a huge bathroom with walk in shower and separate bath. Like the rest of the house, the attention to detail in this suite was sublime (I could have locked myself away in the suite for the duration of our stay). ||We enjoyed a beautiful home cooked afternoon tea prepared by Nicola - piece of advice, arrive hungry because the portions are so generous and the food is too good to leave any. Breakfast is even more generation with fruits, yoghurts, cereals, pastries and then a cooked main which really does set you up for the day. ||We went for a drive around the Cotswolds to take in the sites and local attractions, Gary and Nicole kindly gave us a list of suggested places to visit and we made sure we did them all. ||Our stay was nothing short of perfection. The Cotswolds called us again for our third stay at Oak House No1. The moment||we pass through their door we are transported to an enchanting Aladdin's Cave delivering ultimate chic kissed by bohemian rhapsody. Our hosts Gary & Nicola offer you a private entree to their lifetime of travel, and designer passions which you are instantly swept up by. Greeted as life long friends rather than guests you feel that the party has just begun and believe me one or two nights is not enough. Each suite wraps you in unbridled luxury tempered by supreme comfort, including the silken indulgence of Frette Linens, Molton Brown toiletries and bath robes fit for a King. Apt really given that HRH Prince Charles' Highgrove House and Garden is just ten minutes drive away.||Their newly refurbished Cavalier Suite (comprising bedroom, library sitting room and a huge bathroom) features a four poster bed festooned in a silk canopy and bespoke bedspread which was eagerly embraced by 'his Lordship' who struggled to leave as did I. My Wife and I have stayed in several BnBs and hotels in the UK. Standards vary , some are value for money ,some fall far short. Oak House No 1 is in our humble view , the best ! |It's a bit hard to locate because there's no large signage - just a well trimmed hedge , a simple black gate and an understated metal plate above the blue front door announcing the location. There is a large car park in front of the house and parking is provided. It's next to the Chipping Court. |When you enter the House , it's anything but understated - it's like stepping into an art decor museum! Lovely bold Colours, fascinating art works and furniture. There's a touch of Dali , Picasso and modern art. |The living room is a lovely blue theme , the dining room a bold red and green combination- most tastefully done . ||We were greeted by Nikola and Gary- we knew immediately that this would be a warm and hospitable stay-they were so helpful and eager to Ensure our comfort. |Nikola made us some sandwiches and soup after our long journey as we didn't want to go out for dinner - these were the best and freshest sandwiches we have had - gobbled down the whole lot- and the soup as well!||Our Prince room was large, extremely clean With classic furniture and a big bathroom. The bed was large and comfortable too. The bathroom is warm and you won't shiver as you step out from the shower. Cupboard space is adequate. You can make coffee, tea and hot chocolate drinks and fresh milk is also provided in the room. |Breakfast is an event not to be missed - a very good selection of fruits , breads , delicious jams, cereals , 2 juices , muffins and a selection of hot items which are prepared on the spot. What makes it special is our hosts' company as they chat and provide useful suggestions for your day. Very good and helpful tips!|We had a high tea- Nikola baked the cakes and scones , and made the sandwiches. Nicola's high tea should be ranked in the TOP 10 in the UK - it's so good!! The sandwiches - which we had 2 nights before|, tasted just as delicious , the cakes were fresh , not too sweet and moist . We pigged out . The high tea is a must - just like The wonderful|Art pieces on the walls , this is Nicola's masterpiece . |What makes the House truly No 1 is Gary and Nikola- they are the heart and soul of this BnB. It's not a business , it's a passion for them. Their attention to detail , enthusiasm, stories about their travels and adventures and just overall warmth made our stay so wonderful. They made us feel like family ! If you are inclined to engage with them and share stories , it's an enriching and joyful experience. |There are only 3 rooms - and perhaps this is also how they manage to maintain such a high standard of comfort , hospitality and warmth. |This is THE BnB to stay in the Cotswolds!|This is my longest review to date , but anything shorter would have been an injustice to Gary and Nikola, and Oak House No 1. Well done and thank you both for a lovely and endearing stay. More...
