Q&As

I love being able to offer music to children and adults of all abilities. Our school is about enjoying music. Students can go for exams if they wish, but it is not our sole or primary focus. Each pupil is different, with their own individual requirements for both what they want to achieve and how they learn. This thought is at the forefront of every lesson. We aim to inspire and encourage without pressure to perform or compete (opportunities are available for those who wish to though). I love being part of the community and getting to know the children and adults that come along. There's a real sense of achievement watching people develop and enjoy their music, and hearing all the lovely feedback about how much their confidence and enjoyment has grown. My music school has remained small and personal, and this is reflected in our flexible approach to classes. I have a great team of young, enthusiastic tutors which helps keep us up to date with the latest material and techniques, and the fact that we are able to use community facilities means we can offer all these services at reasonable prices too - BONUS!

There was a real lack of music clubs for youngsters in the village when I moved in, so I was encouraged to start something up (after a cameo appearance at a toddler group Christmas party). It started with the pre-school class (Hullabaloo) but after a while I realised that by P1, children were travelling into the local towns or to Edinburgh for music tuition. There is no formal class music in Pencaitland, (and in some other East Lothian schools) until P3 and instruments here aren't offered until P5 so I started offering classes to infant children. We started with musicianship skills through songs and games (at about this time I was training with the National Youth Choir, so I was also keen to try out my new found skills), and then progressed to offering taster blocks in ukulele, piano and violin (which we still do). As the requests for instruments and group classes have come in, we have adapted including adding teens and adults to our list of students.

Our focus is helping you to enjoy music, however this looks & feels for you. We're not focused on profit, not on exam results, just on you. We have people from age 5 to age (well, let's say 45 to be kind) studying many different styles and at all levels, so really, it's over to you. You can always come and see for yourself!
