AS a professional financial journalist with nearly 30 years experience, I cut my teeth on provincial and national daily newspapers and have expanded that knowledge with time spent contributing to weekly, monthly and online publications in a diverse range of fields.
In 2006 I elected to shift to self-employment in a decision I have never regretted for the freedom and personal growth it has afforded.
Financial journalism encompasses every element of news given money rules the world and I have written about business personalities and their contributions to society; property developments and opportunities; health, education and legal issues and their impact on society; exports and foreign exchange rates and the beauty that comes with realising a dream.
I have also worked with public relations companies where outsourcing their specialised writing makes financial sense and worked on annual reports as a writer, editor, copywriter and general dogsbody that ensures this critical piece of investment information reaches the audience for whom it is intended, but in a style that can be understood regardless of the jargon.
A successful ghost-writing career has also seen my intellectual property appear under the byline of a high-flying company chief executives and chairmen whose expertise and experience can make an impact in their environments in which they operate, but for whom the written word is best left in the hands of the professional.
I have also brought to print numerous authors who have spent countless hours crafting their novels, autobiographies and self-help books, but who also require the technical skills involved in bringing together their thoughts with fresh eyes and objectivity.
In the times when the dryness of financial journalism has sapped out the creativity, I have allowed my sensual passions to lead my writing. I have studied wine and the industry through the Cape Wine Academy and wrote a twice-monthly column in a provincial daily newspaper for 18years until the publication changed its editorial policy. Wine and food hold a special place in my heart for their ability to bring together communities and personalities. Everyone eats daily and the culture that incorporates wine into that social interaction has built an environment that breaks down walls and introduces new friends when you least expect them.
Since 2016, I have been a regular contributor to the annual Eat Out Restaurant Guide, specifically reviewing restaurants and eateries across KwaZulu-Natal with the ability to bring a slightly different approach to those critiques given my training and interests.
