About

My name is Gordon Webster - I'm a professional photographer based in Cambridge Massachusetts and I've had a camera in my hand for almost as long as I've been able to read or write. The photographs that I love the most are the ones that have an emotional impact and a story to tell, and this is the foundation of my photographic style.

Q&As

Every photograph is a kind of visual story to the viewer. Like stories that are written or filmed as movies, a still image conveys a message and expresses a particular mood or emotion. What is foremost in my mind when I take a photograph, is "What do I want to say?" All of the technical stuff you learn as a photographer is really just the means by which you can execute on that simple but far-reaching idea.

Try to determine a clear vision of what you want from the images I will deliver to you. Even write it down as a statement or a list, before we ever start shooting. You may not have a clear idea of exactly what shots, angles or light you want and that's okay - it's part of my job as a photographer, to help and guide you in all of that. But I find that the best outcomes for the client (and thereby, for myself) happen when the client has carefully thought through what it is they want to achieve with the images I will create for them, even if they haven't nailed it down to specific shots. This is true for all of the different types of photography I offer, from commercial and editorial photography, to portraits and weddings. As the client, you are way (way) more likely to get what you want if you really know what you want.

Seeing and creating photographs is a very meditative and fulfilling activity. It's a constant and lifelong education to learn how to see the photograph you want to take, and to improve your craft such that your technical skills aren't an impediment to realizing your vision for the image. One of the unanticipated joys of the job has also been all of the wonderful people that I've gotten to meet while doing it. :-)

Initially it was the urge to share my photographs with others by having my own online galleries. It really blossomed from the ability to reach so many people online, and to build on their feedback.

I think I'm a pretty skilled and creative photographer, but I also really enjoy working with people. I'm a good listener, but I'm also not afraid to tell my clients when I think that something won't work, and to help guide them to a solution that they will be pleased with.
