MXN Design Q&A

MXN Design Q&A

What’s your interior design process?

My interior design process is to firstly analyse the space and the work with the client to gain a deeper understanding of what the room will be used for. By understanding the key requirements we can then think about the possibilities for the space. I then draw up either a verbal or formal proposal, handing it back to you for approval, suggestions and amendments.

Which interior design styles can you cater for?

Our interior design projects and indeed design projects in general (see below) are wide and varied. We love contemporary styling but we are also appreciative and sympathetic towards more traditional styles.

What do you love most about your job?

Interior design is made easy when budgets are large and not restricted, but throwing money at a project does not necessarily make it beautiful and as an interior designer, it does not present much of a challenge. So when asked what I love most about being an interior designer, it is the challenge of creating what the client desires, whilst working within a restricted budget. I love to exceed a clients expectations of what can be achieved.
I also love the new enthusiasm towards smaller spaces and how ingenuity and multifunctional furniture can transform the smallest of rooms into liveable areas.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I have been self employed for my entire life. I have a natural eye for what looks good and also the practical skills to ensure the project is delivered to the very highest standard.

Why should our clients choose you?

My services can be used to cover both small and large scale projects. As well as creating end to end interior design solutions, I also have the practical skills to get hands on in a project when required. I have a team of people who can work with me, but I like to be on site to manage the process.
I work with many brands and retailers but if you have a particular brand or style requirement I am happy to work with your suggestions.

San Carlo Restaurants Manchester/Leicester/Birmingham

The San Carlo Restaurant chain is now synonymous with authentic Italian food, across the UK and beyond. The brief was to carry a refurbishment of three restaurants. The objective was to makeover the existing space both in terms of aesthetics and function. The growing popularity of the restaurants meant creating more seating within the same space. This was done by installing curved booths in corners of the rooms which were not be used. Each bespoke booth was handcrafted. An additionally challenge of this project was that the restaurants did not want to close whilst refurbishment took place. Therefore my team and I arrived late in the evening, working through the night and next morning to transform the spaces for service the next day.

North Wales Residential

The owners of a luxury converted chapel in North Wales were looking to create an inner garden in the extensive hallway of their home. To accentuate the height of the living space we installed an eye catching bamboo wallpaper to the rear wall, please see below. The windows were replaced with new windows so you could totally open them to allow fresh air to flow through. We installed a bespoke fireplace and whilst we suggested a vertical garden using mosses, the clients were not keen so we replaced with this fabulous click and go wall climbers, all made from plastic. See pictures above.

Castle Lodge Residential

After a recommendation from a previous client, the owners of this beautiful detached house in North Wales were looking to give a new modern look to their conservatory. Not content with the original wicker chairs they had in place we restyled. With this project the smallest change made the biggest impression. The clients had previously had blinds hanging in the conservatory. As the space was not at all overlooked we stripped this right back to bring the garden area into the space. The large Chesterfield sofas were situated elsewhere in the house and replaced with more contemporary furniture which allowed the light and indeed the view to come through and filter into the rest of the kitchen. See the pictures above.

Edge Apartment Manchester/Commercial

This was created as a show apartment for the Edge Apartments in Manchester. This apartment was the smallest of the apartments on offer and required careful planning to make use of the small space. As the room was actually a studio apartment you can see the beautiful Eileen Grey black lacquered screen dividing the area. Please see pictures above.

Monks Contractors/ Blackburn/ Commercial

A total refurbishment on all floors, including service areas and management spaces.

Play Rooms/ Residential

Having three children myself I know the fun and happiness which a dedicated child play space can bring. The first project was to build a traditional tree house from waste materials that could be found around the house. Please see pictures above. The treehouse featured a "glass" roof from corrugated plastic and a window. There was also a small electronic lift which could be used for sending food and supplies up to the kids in the tree house. The second projects features the build of a play dome. The fabulous structure was built on site and installed with electricity, heating and running water. At night the kids could light it up , giving off a space theme. See pictures above.

Home Office Residential

This was a small but perfect job. The client wanted an office space which reflected their personality, but the space was small. After our first meeting it became apparent that her two passions were travel and the performing arts. We reflected this in the space by choosing wall paper which gave the appearance of a stage curtain, paired with old style postcards from all around the world. The centre piece was the hollywood mirror, which actually creates a great light for working.

Car Interior Projects

As well as working on home interiors, I have also created the entire interiors for two fabulous cars. The Ferrari Dino is a much loved classic but one that is rarely affordable. When JH Classics approached me and asked me to create an entire Dino interior, I wondered how far we could go with it. Please see pictures above. When the project was finished, Kit Car gave us a mention stating that it was the most authentic interior they had seen to date. Please see pictures of the conversion of a VW to a wedding vehicle.
