Very good introduction & without any pressure, I initially was just going to have a tree cut, but was considering a patio & after speaking to Jess about what he could do ended up having patio & new turf & edging. Jess & Ben have been brilliant from start to finish of this project. We can’t recommend them enough. We’d previously kept chickens in our back garden and this involved them having a large run and a house, which took up several square metres. We’d smashed this up but there was a large pile of wood, roofing and chicken wire. Also there were several large vegetable beds, which had fallen into a bit of a sorry state and we’d taken them apart but were left with a big pile of dirt and compost. We’d estimated we’d need two 6-8 yard skips to get rid of all this. In addition, the new build developer when building our house had placed the shed in the middle of the garden against the fence and put in a small “patio” leading up to this, which we’d never really been happy with.

So the job was to clear the rubbish and dirt, relocate the shed to the far corner, pull up the existing patio and grass, put in a new patio including a path and a medium sized seating area using sandstone paving and to re-turf the remaining space (maybe 60% of the garden). I would classify our garden as small but as it was basically a do over I’d say it was a fair job.

Jess of Mulberry Landscapes was the quickest to reply to our job advert and was the most proactive in coming out to give us an estimate. Straightaway he came across as reliable and seemed to have a good grasp of what we were looking to get done. We were upfront about our budget and Jess worked to stay within this, much more than other landscapers we contacted did and as such he was much more competitive than the other estimates we received (around half the price of others). We are relative novices when it comes to getting people in to do work but Jess answered all of our questions clearly and in good time. He also made several suggestions to make things easier/more affordable that we wouldn’t have been aware of otherwise.

To keep costs down, Jess took on more work himself – such as disposing of the rubbish himself to save the cost of skip hire, using own tools rather than hire, using the old slabs to build a new shed base and using the big pile of soil we already had to level off the garden for the tuf (which turned out to be more difficult as the new build developers hadn’t taken much time to do this originally). We were really impressed with this and grateful for the effort he put in so we could stick to what was a tight budget.

Jess managed to fit us in quickly once we gave him the go ahead and although he was juggling several jobs at the time was able to make really good progress. He predicted the work to take around 10 days and it took just over two weeks but as to begin there were three days of torrential rain where he did well to get even a few hours work done, I’d say this was completed on time. Jess was also very flexible as we changed our mind several times about what was happening with the grass before asking him late on to lay new turf and he stuck exactly to the estimate (plus the cost of the new turf but we didn’t ask him to do this until work was basically underway so wasn’t in the original price). Jess provided all materials except the slabs, which we found at a local supplier.

We’re really happy with the finished article (pictures available on his facebook page) and especially the patio. We bought a discontinued range of slabs to get a bargain but these were quite thin and uneven, so were difficult to work with but all lines and joins are square and the overall surface is level, mainly due to Jess taking painstaking care over each individual slab. It looks really good and we can’t wait to enjoy it once the sun returns.

The only critique we’d make is that we weren’t always clear when Jess would be coming, meaning on a couple of occasions the garden was left unlocked when it didn’t need to be but this was really minor and was probably due to him fitting us in a short notice during a busy period so we’d have the garden ready for the summer.

I would happily recommend Jess to any friend or family and to anyone looking to have some garden work done. Our budget for the work was very tight and we weren’t convinced we’d be able to get the work done but thanks to Jess we were able, so I’d definitely suggest reaching out even if you think your budget is too low.

Very happy and would use Mulberry Landscapes in the future if we ever had need.

Mulberry Landscapes were excellent. Their work was first-class and they were extremely efficient, reliable and fair on price. So pleased I engaged them.

Jess was the first to quote, and as soon as he mentioned a realistic price, (half to a third of the other quotes!) I knew he was the one to use. There was also something about his demeanour which said he was someone you could trust.

Did a good job cutting tree / tidying up laurel / cutting a bough overhanging greenhouse ... and tidying up afterwards. A very realistic price for the four hours they spent on job.

If I have one 'complaint', it's that one side of the tree was not trimmed much at the top. Fair dues, it's a very awkward place to get to being directly above a 30 degree driveway slope, and no way to postion a ladder safely. I don't think evey a scaffold tower would work there !

Overall, more than satisfied with the work. I shall keep his card so I know who to call next time ! More...
