We hired Marcus at MS Lighting to design the lighting for the full refurbishment of a 4000 sq ft house in South West London. He put a detailed and clear design package together ahead of our building tender, worked effectively with our main contractors, and supplied all the built in lighting. He also helped with the set up of a Rako lighting control system. The end result is exceptional, balancing functionality and aesthetics well, and has significantly added to the quality of the finish. The lighting supplied was very clearly labelled, circuit by circuit, which saved time for the electricians. Overall, we’d strongly recommend considering using a specialist lighting designer if you are doing a large renovation project. Most contractors will just fit rows of standard ceiling spots, and while interior designers will give ideas for feature lights, they’re less likely to be skilled at designing built in lighting. What do you love most about your job?
We love meeting new clients and discovering what they are passionate about. We tailor our designs to our clients, and this means we learn a lot about their personal lives, and how the new home will change how they live. Whether it is a home for a young family or a gallery for an artistic couple, we learn so much while doing these projects. Showing them how light can change how they live is magical, as is the moment the realise what is possible.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have worked in lighting design for 13 years. Previously I worked within a much larger company providing lighting design services tied to the supply of light fittings. I wanted to focus on providing impartial lighting design advice, and do this specifically for the residential market, where it is a lack of independent advice. We spend a huge amount of time in our homes, and in general they are very poorly lit. I want to help my clients create a beautiful atmosphere within their homes that allows them to relax after a long day, or enjoy a meal with friends and family.
Why should our clients choose you?
We work with our clients, we don't impose design styles and restrictions on them. We use our extensive knowledge to educate our customers, and propose designs, so that they can make an informed choice about their lighting.
We are independent and impartial, so we can provide honest advice about whether a light fitting is suitable or not, while the client is safe in the knowledge that we are not making these suggestions based on commission, etc.
