How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
For a loft conversion, first of all you need to have a minimum height of around 2.2M from the bottom of the ceiling joist to the ridge of the roof.
This is to meet the building regulations requirements of 2M head height.
Secondly, you will need to have space for a set of stairs from the floor below to gain access to the loft area, this is usually in the landing area, but sometimes from a bedroom.
If you have a hip roof, this shouldn't be a problem as we can change the roof structure to accommodate.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
First stage is planning, Drawings are essential so everyone knows what to do to complete the project.
Scaffolding will be required to gain access to the loft and also have a safe area to work. For an extra cost a temporary roof is a good idea to help speed up the job and to reduce any leaks when the roof is removed.
Make a access area in the roof to access the loft from outside. This is essential to allow materials and workmen easy access into the Loft area.
Install any required Steel and build up floor structure and board.
Build up main wall, cheeks and roof structure ready for roofing works to be completed.
Make flat roof water tight, we use a GRP coating as this lasts longer and is quicker to apply.
Tile dorma walls and any areas around the dorma that have been damaged.
Fit exterior windows/doors
Any heating or electrical work
Insulate and plasterboard ceiling and walls.
Install staircase/spindles.
Plaster the loft area and affected areas
Final fix joinery, skirting, arch, doors etc.
