Modern Pastry is Boston's best for cannoli and freshly baked Italian pastries. The connoli shells are baked in advance (daily) but they aren't filled until the moment you order them amazing, and they are ridiculously delicious! Modern has been here for more than 50 years. Mike's Pastry, located on the opposite side you may be better known for tourists, but Modern is the place where the locals go! 100% recommend! More...
So many choices!!! They all looked great. I have Celiac so I got the gf cannoli and a gf cookie. Both were great. They keep the gf cannoli shells in a separate container and only fill after ordering. For gf the only option for filling is ricotta cheese- it was great! More...
Yum!!! Had cookies, cream puff and (?) ....Great counter helpTried to com back but the line was too longWill return!
Pignoli cookies, pistachio cookies, chocolate dipped biscotti along with the original anise biscotti were all fresh and delicious! Def lived up to its reviews and expectations! Worth checking out while in Boston...line moves quick! More...
Modern Pastry Shop lives up to its hype of their infamous cannoli. The line is long and I'd recommend that you know what you want by the time that you're next in line. With cannolis, they have various options on what you want for the shell, filling, and topping. I got the plain shell with traditional ricotta filling and topped with pistachio and my god it was heavenly. I loved that the filling was super fresh and only had a subtle hint of sweetness that lingers towards the end. The pistachios were a bonus in texture and flavor. The cannolis seems to be made fresh when ordered, and they're opened fairly late so do yourself a favor and come by to try it! More...
Lobster tail so delicious!!! The best it could feed a small army Amaretto pastry amazing marzipan so goodLoved our sassy nice waitress excellent
Being a rival of mikes, I ordered a plain ricotta cannoli with chocolate chips to compare to mikes original ricotta. This was 25 cents more but was much smaller so already Mikes was better bang for your buck. I liked the chocolate chips in the cream to add a little texture and the cream was sweeter, which I liked more! However the shell didn't add very much and a little more soggy. It didn't add anything to the cannoli but it didn't take away from it either. Overall, a decent place to get a cannoli and it's nice that you can customize your own. The line is shorter and their pastries as you walk in look delicious. I would definitely try those next time, as for cannolis I'll probably stick to Mikes More...
Some of the best cannolis I have ever had. The line was down the block but it's so worth it! They have a lot of different Italian and French desserts so there's something for everyone. 4 cannolis and a tiramisu for $20, not bad! More...
I like Modern over Mike's because they fill it fresh! I took my family here when they visited Boston and they all liked their cannoli. I always get the plain shell with ricotta and pistachios. The shell is a good amount of crunch and the ricotta compliments it really well. Their ordering is much more civilized than Mike's too. More...
Excellent place! Great desserts & cappuccino!
I just wanna compliment the waitstaff at the seating area. Those girls were just the sweetest, even with a fully packed house and craziness everywhere.
Third time in Boston and after trying Mike's cannolis two times, I thought it's high time I gave Modern Pastry a try. I went there with my mom and sister on a Sunday night at 9 pm and the line was out the door. It was really chilly outside so it feels like forever for the line to move. Once inside, you will be graced with cases of cakes, cookies and all Italian sweet delicacies. They all look enticing, but I need to remind myself the main reason why I came here - CANNOLIS!!! We got the plain cannoli with chocolate chip, a lemoncello and a walnut cookie covered in chocolate. I thought the cannoli here is slightly better which may or may not be due to its manageable size (smaller than Mike's Pastry) They were fairly similar though. The lemoncello cake was very light, sweet and tangy. It was a little too sweet for me, if it's more mild I might have loved it better. There are tables to dine in as well and you won't have to stay in the line since there will be servers. The staffs weren't very friendly or patient, hence the four stars. I went to Mike's in Harvard Square and its staffs were much more helpful and polite. More...
LOVE THIS PLACEOTTIMI CANNOLI
Stopped here as it was recommended on a lot of different websites. Long lines but they kept it moving pretty quick. Treats were certainly worth the wait!
I love this place!! Their Chocolate Eclairs are to die for!! The only thing that I don't like is that you can only pay with cash. Its small so there's always a long line, but I promise you that it is worth the wait. This place is one of my all time favorite spots to visit. Every time I go to Boston, I have to stop here. I cannot recommend this spot enough, I hope everyone gets to experience this place. You will not regret it! More...

Best Lobster Tail in Boston. Perfect crust. Tasty cream. They are quite large so be prepared to share.
I have resisted this place because it seems touristy and not authentically Italian. But the first bakery we went to for Italian cookies (our go to) was a little underwhelming, so we went into Modern. And we weren't disappointed. We got a box of cookies, assorted varieties, and brought them for dessert. And everyone raved about them. Every one we tried was soft and fresh. The fig cookies and pignolis were esp popular. There wasn't a bad one in the bunch. And our timing was excellent, a big group of tourists came in right after we got in line. More...
This Boston Pastry shop is close to Mike's Pasty so we wanted to try out their cannolis to compare. They had many cake, pastry, and cookie options in their cases and shelves. We went for the chocolate chip and pistachio cannolis. The cannolis were made/filled to order while you wait. You choose the shell, filling, and toppings. They had their own distinct flavor which separated themselves from their competitor down the street. We were split on who's cannoli was their favorite but all in all we enjoyed our visit! More...
Cannolis with ricotta and pistachio topping!!! THE BEST!! There is normally a line that wraps all the way out the door but it moves fairly quick.
Great gluten free cannolis! Prices are a bit high but definitely worth it! I wish they had more gluten free baked goods available.
If you want to know what a real cannoli is, come here. They fresh fill their cannoli and sfogliatelle to order. It is not possible to get a great cannoli unless its done this way. Traditional size and flavor. Not the oversized, pre-made stuff in funny flavors you see in tourist traps. Served today by a woman whom I believe may have been the owner. Friendly service. Thank you for a great cannoli! More...
Huge canolis! Yum
We were cannoli hopping and this was our last stop, so unfortunately we were a bit full already, but we still got a cannoli and a lobster tail. There was a bit of a queue because they were managing pickup orders at the same time. But once we got to the front, everything went quite quickly and smoothly. The space isn’t so large so we couldn’t find a table, and just ate our sweets outside. The pastry and filings were really well made. The lobster tail is pretty much two meals. Very reasonably priced, and just beautiful to look at along with being delicious. More...

Stop 2 on the cannoli tour!To be fair, I can't say I've fully completed my cannoli assessments throughout the North End. We did a head-to-head trial of Mike's vs. Modern, but I must disclose a design flaw. We went with ricotta filling for both (controlled), but did opt for almond topping and the mini size at Modern. I just don't think you can draw an accurate conclusion if the filling/shell ratio isn't standardized. It's like a cupcake vs. a mini-cupcake (and everyone knows mini-cupcakes are abominable). But, given the limitations of the above study, I would say that I preferred the crisp, crunchy shell at Modern. It was also more pleasant and less dramatic being able to fit a mini cannoli in one's mouth within a few bites. Much less messy. For those who care, you also are getting made-to-order cannolis in terms of your filling and toppings, so you only have yourself to blame if you customize poorly. There are fewer cannoli permutations, only 2-3 filling/topping choices. Their alternative pastries looked tempting as well. Line seemed shorter, but given that Mike's has multiple parallel lines at once, I think the wait times were comparable. This place is also CASH-ONLY, limited seating, plan to carry out. This time, you'll get a red and white box! More...
Amazing beautifully presented pastry and tasty cannoli in the North End. We had a huge Italian lunch just prior to visiting, so we "just" had some of their great cannoli To Go. Had the traditional with pistachios, and it did not dissapoint! You can dine in, and there's also restrooms in the basement, and seemingly a nicer bar and dining area. Good stop when you're visiting Boston's North End (and yes, I've been to the other cannoli place, too.) More...
Definitely a must see while you're in Boston.Pros:+ Great for a quick stop after dinner+ Gorgeous and delicious pastries+ Customize-able canopies - filled right in front of you+ Two lines - be on the look out for a line on the side of the restaurant. There is the main entrance as well as a side entrance that is there without much wait. It's the original entrance from years ago.Cons:- Limited decoration and seating in the second side establishment- Case only More...
Good vibe. Delicious goodies. Price is reasonable. Note that the line (which is usually long during weekends) is for takeout. You can bypass the queue by sitting at the table and eat your dessert...[a waitress will come to take your order]Recently we tried their no-flour pastry which is a ricotta cheese based cream. It is soft. Pretty good. More...

Good iconic mainstream pastry shop very well know in Boston. This is good tasty pastries that are very much mainstream staple. This is not a high end best chocolate you have tasted but rather a warm inviting iconic happy pastry shop for kids and grown ups alike. More...
Delicious pastries, but the woman who helped us was terrible.
Went here on a Saturday afternoon, we had to stand in queue for 15 minutes, while having the sight of their best pastries. Ordered strawberry shortcake slice a whole new experience of it. Real strawberries and delicious cake on top of a puff pastry is best of our day. Another pastry, French roll (cream roll) is above average. Both of these are not overly sweet and rich taste. Can see and feel the quality, definitely worth visiting when you are in north end. More...
All this silliness over who makes the best cannoli, if you like one pastry shop over the other, cool. No need for name calling Boston! Besides, I'm from New York so these silly games don't apply. :DHello Modern Pastry Shop! First I have to say, there was a controlled, ordering process. No crazy tourists with money in their hands saying gimme! I had a nice counter person during my entire transaction. I asked for a simple pistachio cannoli. She went in the back, it seemed she was gone for at least 5 minutes.I'm assuming she's filling the cannoli for me. All said and done, I was asked if I wanted powered sugar. I said no but then she upsold me! Are you sure Maybe just a little ok? How can I argue with a pretty face? Sure, not a problem. No seating in Modern Pastry Shop unless you want to order like in a restaurant. Me, I want my cannoli to try right now! I went outside and took a bite. Very rich and creamy and the pistachio gave it that extra crunch factor. Total fan of the Modern Pastry Shop Cannoil.Modern Pastry Shop, you made the Northside proud with that Italian specialty cannoli! More...
I am not the biggest on pastry food, but this was beyond a 5! We had the cannoli with custard and I have been telling people about it for days. Try and you will not be disappointed. More...
Desserts were awesome! The cannolis were fresh and made to order. Highly recommend.
ONE OF THE TOP BAKERIES IN THE NORTH END. LOVE YOU GUYS.
I used to go there on weekly basis. I travel three miles only to get some pastries. So you can imagine the quality of pastries there.
I think this is one of the better bakeries in the North End. I know Mike's gets the most attention, but Modern is a little better in my opinion. They offer a huge selection of delicious desserts, chocolates, and coffees. They have a basement bar that offers tasty lunch/dinner plates, plus an adorable little bar. They have a trivia night that is a ton of fun - I love being able to enjoy trivia, then head upstairs and grab a mini key lime pie (my favorite). More...
Great place for sweet treats!Fast friendly service and amazing coffee!
Nice place, very tasty ice latte.
Cash only pastry shop with fast service and a wide selection - just be warned that some of the labels are switched, so if it's your first time, you might be getting something different than what you think you ordered. The person working the counter said it was the stocker's problem and wouldn't fix it, but their customer service is nice in that they give glasses of water when asked. More...
Love their chocolate cheesecake
Really delicious pastries! You can't go to the North End without stopping at Modern. You can taste the freshness in each pastry. Prices are totally reasonable--I believe we got about five desserts for $20 or less. HIGHLY recommend the lobster tail! That is a meal in itself for sure! More...
My favorite pastry shop in Boston - definitely better than Mike's Pastry - stick with the Italian specialties like cannolis, cookies, pistachio macaroons, etc. Don't order the "American" desserts, like cake. Modern is located in the North End (ie Little Italy) - you should trust the Italian classics, as this is their specialty. The cannolis are all hand filled on the spot - the ricotta filling is pure perfection.FYI this restaurant is CASH ONLY. Pro Tip: Sit at a table and enjoy your pastry there. Tables are usually open, and it will allow you to skip the line. More...
Best Rainbow cookies in town! And, if you have time to sit down, they make some great specialty drinks too!
Wonderful cannoli! Worth every penny . Beautiful pastries and wonderful staff.Spacious seating.. but bring your money cash only!
To prep for my first trip to Beantown I did intensive research on the "must have" eats and two Little Italy bakeries kept popping up. So of course I had to do a proper taste test and see who wins the battle of best cannoli. This is serious business. Plain shell. Ricotta filling. Chocolate chips. I've had my fair share of cannolis in life being from NY and being part Italian. Modern Pastry won hands down. No comparison in my book. It even beats all the cannolis at my local bakeries. I wish I had more time to go back and try all their desserts because they all looked so delicious. Everyone go get a cannoli....and send me some please!! More...
This place was pretty amazing. We are a family of 5 but only 2 cannoli eaters. So this place was great for everyone. The mini choc chip cannoli was perfect. The right size & consistency. Big peanut butter cup was really good. The nice man behind the counter was so very nice. More...
Delicious traditional ricotta cannoli with chocolate chips. ~$5. Tons of fancy and very appealing desserts. Would definitely come again. Open late. Some seating available. Moderately paced service. Not many vegan options. More...
This place...I have no words!! The selection and taste of the pastries we ordered were fresh and they had plenty to choose from! Whatever you order, will make your sweet tooth happy! After seeing so much about the "other shop" up the street this by far is better and the staff was super friendly and accommodating! The quality of the pastries is top notch and they do not cut corners! Go check them out over the other place bc it's where the locals go...not a tourist attraction like up the street!! Best in the North End neighborhood!! More...
Best cannoli I've ever had. I like it better than Mike's personally! They also handle a drunk crowd with a lot of grace.
Limited seating is heartily compensated by the delicious sandwiches and reasonable prices. Chicken parmigiana is made from fresh chicken, hand- breaded. The pastries beckoned, but we were unable to finish our lunch and had to pass. The waitress made meal suggestions and came back to give us directions for Boston's fun places to visit. More...
Seems that there are two popular pastry shops on this street. It seems that a lot of locals recommend Modern over the other one and the other one seemed really chaotic with no sense to the madness. At least at Modern Pastry there's a line so you know where to go. I didn't try the cannolis (I know, I know, that's what they're famous for!). Instead, I opted for the lemencello and the rum cake. Both were extremely delicious and about 3.75 each, very reasonably priced. Not too sweet and the breading is fluffy and soft. Didn't taste like they were sitting around for a long time. Tips: Know what you want as soon as you get up to the counter. The staff does NOT take any nonsense and they work extremely fast paced. Also, CASH ONLY. More...
The cannolis are delicious. The other place across the street is also delicious. Not going to try to settle that in this review. :-). Posting just to reinforce that modern has gluten-free options for those need it. Cannolis and Whoopi pies. Mmm!Keep in mind cash only. More...
Amazing pastry. Friendly service. Love this place. The Cannolis were amazing. Several locals recommended this restaurant.
After getting a frantic from my sister in law that the cake to her baby shower fell over. I decided to go on the hunt for a new one. I tried stopping at a couple pastry shops in the North End, but the lines were way too long, or they didn't have what I wanted. Then I walked into Modern, frantic trying to find a cake with the same color scheme as the baby shower colors. I was able to find two cakes that matched, and with the help of Sari an employee at Modern Pastry I was able to save the baby shower. Sari helped me decorate the cakes along with giving me additional pastry to compliment the cakes. Even though it was a hectic Sunday afternoon for them, she was able to push my order along. The end result was perfect.!! To the owners and employees of Modern Pastry... Thank you.!! P.S Sari you rock.!!! More...
Apparently every cannoli I had ever had before here was a piece of shit, I used to say, 'why do people like these'? They are the worst pastry in existence and should be stricken from the earth. Then I had one from Modern Pastry and my view on cannoli was forever changed. I have no idea if this is the 'world's best' cannoli or not, but my god was it far superior to every one I had ever had. I went with the chocolate shell, ricotta filling and slivered almonds. The ricotta was not what I was expecting, it was sweet but no too sweet, and just had the best mouth feel you can imagine, somewhat like drinking a sweet cloud if that's possible. The almonds rounded it out perfectly with their nuttiness, and the chocolate shell was a great addition as well. But really I can't say enough about that ricotta filling, very unexpected to a cannoli novice like myself. Also I took my cannoli through the airport on my way to LaGuardia, the TSA agent was like, are there cannoli in there? So can take through security at the airport if you're wondering. And I ate this probably 6 hours after purchasing it, going through security and flying with my little pastry box, and it was still this good. Can't wait to come back and have more of these tasty treats. More...
There is a long line usually but the coffee was worth it. The iced coffee and cappuccino were delicious however the service took a while. It is cash only so make sure to bring your cash More...
We stopped by here after dinner to pick up a cannoli. I had the ricotta filled chocolate tipped one, and I must admit, I wished I had ordered 2! Definitely stopping be here again!
Definitely going to be my go-to place when I visit Boston. I only tried one cannoli and the pistachio macaroon...but that was more than enough. There are so many dessert options here so feel free to be adventurous. More...
Look on counter for what is special. It won't be cheap - but likely better than any of usual pastries you would expect at traditional, authentic Italian pastry shop. I found a great chopped fig topped pastry. Delicious but $22/lb so dear. Delicious!!Traditional turrone was also good. More...
Best traditional cannoli I've ever had. I'm no expert in cannoli. I'm not even Italian, but the cannoli I've tried in other places have never impressed me much. I've always found it to be an ok dessert/pastry. However, I kept hearing how good cannoli in Boston's "North End" was, specifically a place called "Mike's," which from the looks of it, every tourist around hears the same thing, as we saw many tourists with their little boxes of cannoli from "Mike's" stamped on the box all over the place. I tried a couple of cannolis in the area while I was in Boston over an almost 2-week period. Wasn't impressed with any that I tried (as usual). I was ready to give up, then I tried Modern Pastry and was again underwhelmed when I tried their "chocolate cannoli." It was basically chocolate pudding in a cannoli shell. Luckily, my wife went with the traditional plain ricotta with pistachios (she picked the winner). When I tried a bite of her cannoli, I loved it. Finally a fresh-tasting, falvorful cannoli. I came back to Modern Pastry about a week later and got two plain shell, ricotta with pistachio cannolis and shared with my family. Highly recommend this particular cannoli (I can't speak for many other treats there, except for the few different treats my kids had--which didn't impress-- and the different cannolis they had--which were just ok). If you're going to eat a cannoli, stick with the traditional kind, at least here at Modern Pastry, it was excellent. More...
What can I say that has not been said yet about this place....? All I can say is, "Yummy Yummy Yummy!!!!"Once you walk-in you are greeted with showcase coolers of amazing cookies, cakes, pies, and every kind of cannoli you can imagine. I always come here for the lobster tail, which is a giant pastry puff filled with delicious crème. However, although that is what I initially come for, I will always get something else because it looks so good. The one thing that I would add that you need to look out for is that this place is "CASH ONLY" I have come here and seen people place their orders and when it comes time to pay, they only have a card. There are lots of ATM's and banks nearby, just be sure you stop by and get some cash before coming here. More...
I love modern pastry. My coworkers love when I stop by before work to bring them treats from here. Also, my family loves treats at family parties. Their birthday cakes are great too. More...
Modern Pastry is DELICIOUS. I came here about eight years ago and this bakery has held a spot in my heart ever since. I was happy to return a few weeks ago. Everything I've had is delectable and I'm pretty sure angels made the pastries because it is heavenly. There is a small sit down area if you'd like to sit and eat. They will box and tie up your order so you can take it with you, which is nice. It is CASH ONLY, so be aware of that before you go. But seriously. So. Good. More...
Better than Mike's
Really good Italian and French-ish pastries. Skip the coffee.
Fantastic cannolis. The amaretto pastry is amazing. Can’t say enough about how good the food is here.
Best Americano I've ever had!! Have Orietta make it for you!

Best cannolis in Boston ! If you walk in to the right of the food you will find a secret little staircase that goes down stairs and you can eat cannolis and have a drink. Highly recommend doing this.
If you're into sweets and pastries then you won't be disappointed. Just avoid the busiest times and you'll be in and out with a fantastic pastry within 20 minutes.
HOLY CANNOLI. the best cannoli I’ve ever had. Wow wow wow. The line moves fast and is SO WORTH IT.

Great cannoli and coffee. Would come again
Service is a little slow but lots of pastry options. They also serve breakfast!
The cannoli was so good I dreamt about it, and now I’m looking to see if they can ship to me in Texas.
Very friendly and good treats.
This is one of the finest bakeries I've been to! Had the plan cannoli stuffed with the ricotta. It was just great! It was nice and crisp as well.
This and Mike’s rival each other for bakery supremacy in the North End. I like both but I do like Modern a bit more. Had a few different things from there, love their Italian cookies. They also serve coffees/alcoholic beverages and the atmosphere is really cool to sit and hangout. Usually packed all the time. More...

I was not as impressed with my cannolli here as I was with Mike's. It was small in comparison and the shell was hard and didn't taste fresh. The cream puff that my husband had was great! It was not nearly as busy and the atmosphere was less hectic than Mike's. More...
Great pastries, we like it better than Mike's
A classic Italian pastry shop and a an icon to locals. My mom used to work in the North End and trained us well to steer clear of Mike's and their prefilled canolis and always to go to Modern. Everything is delicious, but come here for Italian classics like the canolis, lobster tails, Italian cookies and biscotti, and tiramisu. The line may be long, but it moves quickly and is worth the wait. More...

Amazing pastries and wonderful food in the downstairs pub

The only thing I don't like is cash only
One of the finest pastry shops in Boston. Bit too crowded on busy days but worth the wait time. Had only 'pay by cash' option on the time I visited, which was quite upsetting coz I didn't know until I reached the counter
The cannoli by which all others shall be judged and found wanting. By far the best cannoli I have ever had.
Wait was overly long, seemed like people were ordering large quantities... Maybe for Easter? Cannolo was good, but the other pastries look better.
Nice place, great food
Friendly service and excellent pastry with plenty of coffee drinks. Nice, warm atmosphere. My choice for pastry in the North End.
Had a cannoli and a chocolate cover cheese cake and both were delicious they were the best I’ve ever tasted. Highly recommend Modern Pastry when visiting Boston. It’s a must
I had a friend who loves strawberry shortcake. I remember calling all around Boston and the Greater Boston area, looking for someone who makes strawberry shortcake. Absolutely fabulous. As evidence, witness all the people with Modern Pastry boxes on the street.
Great selection of pastries, it's hard to decide! Long line but worth it. Cash only. The do have setting so you can enjoy you desert there.
Top notch canolli's! We drove 1.5hrs to get them, and will do it again!
Best pastry in the north end. They fill their cannoli fresh unlike many other establishments.
The pastry is awesome. The people are friendly
Makes Mike's look like a hospital waiting room. Good pastries and hot cocoa. Nice waitresses and pretty area
They have gluten free cannoli!
Fantastic employee, got to sit at the owner's table lol
Came here after a Celtics game. A ton of desert options! We had the triple chocolate cake, cream puff (which was big enough for two), hostess cake and a chocolate covered cheesecake. The cream puff was probably the best, with a mix of chocolate and perfectly textured pastry. We were taking everything to go when a table opened up and the staff pleasantly sat us and transferred everything to plates. Great service and fantastic pastries! Important note...CASH ONLY! More...

Fresh and made to order.
Mike's and Modern is on everyone's list to go to just expect to wait in line. Cannoli's were fresh at both and more stuffed with ricotta at Mike's compared to modern. Personal preference was that modern is better due to better pastry-to-ricotta proportion, but you can't go wrong with trying both! More...
Good pastries, and friendly staff.
Nothing better. Go during off-hours to avoid the lines. Best canolis in Boston.

OMG- Modern or Mikes? All the locals swear by BOTH!! Gotta try each of themAnd decide for yourself- no answers here except five star for one and five for the other- not for both!!
Pastry shop an little cafe that has plenty of options to choose from. There is also downstairs portion that had a restaurant and bar. The tablee upstairs are for table service only, otherwise it is a "to-go" kind of location. Gets very busy, but people flow through the store at a decent pace. Coffee was a little weak and too hot, the canoli were good -- did not try any of the other pastries, but looked alright. More...

Lobster tails are filled at time of order and are huge! I still have half of one left over. We tried the lemoncello cake which was amazing!! As well as a gluten free traditional cannoli and a lobster tail. Make sure you get seated prior to ordering if you don’t want your pastry as takeout. cannoli are made to order and are very tasty, so is the tiramisu, a classic pastry shop more relaxed than mike's
Pablo Antonio Alarcón Hidalgo
Exquisito! Cuando llegamos habían filas muy largas, pregunté a qué se debía y era únicamente para comprar los deliciosos postres y dulces que ahí venden! Hice la fila y no me defraudó la espera! Demasiado ricos! Me enamoré de los canolis! More...
After eating both Mike's and Modern, I think Modern is superior. Made to order with just enough sweetness and the pistachios add a great crunch and flavor. Delicious.
Have what I wanted and great customer service.
Great food history
Really great! Just know it's cash only :)
One of my favorite pastry shops. Cannolis are unbelievable.
Excellent pastries and customer service. On 1 visit I walked out without half of my order. When I got home (over 50 miles away) I opened the box and realized part of the order was missing. I called and the woman I spoke with mailed me a gift certificate for the missing pastries. Thats good service. More...
As good as the famous competition but a much better experience since you can get in and order treats.
My waitress Stephanie is the bomb it cannot get better service always willing to please the best waitress in the North End
Long lines. But expected in the north end. Very good cannolis and marscapone
I had coffee latte and cannoli. So awesome
Wow, not sure what we were expecting with the lobster tail pastry, but this was AMAZING!! We would definitely go again.
I give modern pastry five stars. The lobster claw was fantastic! They have a huge selection of pastry.
Travis and Kristina Rhodes
Someone on the subway recommended this place to us over Mikes Pastry. They said the line was shorter and the cannolis just as good. They were right about the line, stood in line about 10 minutes. I would recommend going the traditional route with the ricotta filling. The vanilla cream ones were meh. Also make sure you have CASH, because that is all they accept. There is a place to sit down inside if you have more time and you can order your food and beverages that way instead of waiting in line. More...
Excellent product and service
Great place to share a dessert...
Forget conolis. Grab a lobster tail instead! I did and I have no regrets. It was huge, crispy and filled (FILLED) with delicious cream. Amazing.
Fantastic canolis and most importantly proper Italian caffè (espresso).
אחת משתי הקונדיטוריות הטובות בעיר (השניה בצד השני של הרחוב)
Easily the best cannoli I've ever had.
Plain ricotta with chocolate chips. Lobster tail is great too.
Soo authentic ♡♡♡♡♡
Not as great as Mike's
The lobster tail was one of the best pastries I've ever eaten. The layers of crispy pastry gave way to a texture unlike anything I've ever bitten into. The filling on the inside wasn't too sweet or heavy. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the whoopi pie or eclair. More...
More amazing than I ever even imagined!
I went in seeing a line outside of people waiting to place their orders. I came out with the perfect looking fruit tart and Cannolis. I later realised it’s rated as one of the best pastry shops in Boston and the pastries speak for themselves! More...
Excellent service and delicious food
Packed. It's worth it though.
Amazing pastry shop with such a large variety of goods to select from. I got a cannoli with ricotta filling and pistachios. The filling is freshly piped into the pastry when you order and toppings sprinkled on. The cannoli was by far the best I've ever had. The cream was light and fresh, also not overwhelmingly sweet. Would recommend to anyone stopping by in the North End. This is a cash only place, so make sure to bring some! More...
Always a favorite of mine for cannolis!!!!!
We were going to go the other bakery a block away but after talking with some locals the day prior, they recommended Modern. Cannoli's were delicious!
THE BEST cannoli ! Outstanding double macchiato.
Beautiful desserts but I wish the took cards.
The best pastry shop in Boston! They fill their own cannolis once ordered. Everything we had was amazing. Much better than competing pastry shops in the area.
Tried this place while we were in town. Pretty crowded but line moved quickly. Boston Crème Cupcake was wonderful! My husband got the carrot cake and said it too was delicious. Fun to look at all the amazing pastries! Would go again in a heartbeat! :) More...
Delicious and fun experience.
Fantastic desserts and things...
Eat the lobster tail then take a nap.
I loved the assortment of pastries, option to sit down, and the overall atmosphere. My family and I ordered a chocolate dipped cannoli, tiramisu, an iced cappucino, and an iced coffee to share. Everything was delicious and we had pretty good service! (CASH ONLY) More...
Best canoli ever!
Great freshly filled cannoli
Long-ish wait. Probably 30-minutes on the weekend. Chose it as the alternative to the stupid long wait at MP. Selection was actually superior to what you might find down the block.
Reynaldo L. Diaz Jr.
Outstanding! Fresh made. Enjoy! The locals come here for great pastries! The cannolis are delicious.
Amelia Vidal Marin
Buenísima! Pasteles excelentes, café expreso y americano. El personal muy atento. Hablan español
Here I was very lucky and got in with very little line. I order a chocolate cheesecake that look amazing and taste just OK. Here the looks are much better than the taste. More...
Amazing pastries great coffee
Simply the best ever!!!
The best pastries ever love the atmosphere I visit as much as possible I highly recommend this place to everyone!
Best cannolis in town
We had a wonderful time at Modern Pastry. Everyone was so helpful and friendly, and the service was excellent. The owner and chef even opened the kitchen early for our party of ten, and we enjoyed a very nice lunch with fabulous cannolis for dessert. The chocolate cannoli is the best I've ever had, and the homemade salsa is a must try. Overall an excellent experience that we won't soon forget! More...

Frankly speaking, I ended up going here only because the line at Mike's Bakery was too long. But seriously, I did not regret my decision. Modern Bakery is as good as Mike's and I really love their Lobster Tail pastry. They do have a whole lot of other stuff such as so many different kinds of Canolis, Boston Cream Puffs and Even Fruit Tarts that look and taste delicious. Check it out if you're in the area. More...
Pastries were amazing. Coming back for sure.
Expensive, but super good. Go here instead of Mike's.
Beautiful pastries and cakes.Table and takeout service.
Terrific service and dessert!
Great pastry shop in the middle of Little Italy. This one has a lot of options than the Mike's pastry and little neater as well. Love their pizzelle and the Italian wedding cookies with anise on them. They have a tiny coffee bar with seating area as well. More...
I've been to Boston several times and always went to the other pasty shop down the street. After reading many reviews I figured I would give Modern Pastry a try. I am so glad I did. I won't be going anywhere else when we visit. We got a lobster tail, cookies, and cannoli. They were so fresh and very tasty!! You would truly missing out if you dont stop in. FyI.......they only except CASH!! More...
Their half moon cookies are to die for
Amazing pastry LOL, friendly service !!
Lobster Tail pastries are amazing.
Great pastries, why queue around the block elsewhere when the cannoli here are awesome
The cannolis here are good, but honestly I prefer cannolis from some of Modern’s competitors. The cannolis here are pretty standard...I believe there’s 4 flavors, the option of a regular shell or chocolate dipped or chocolate covered, and a couple toppings (chocolate chips, etc). Our cannolis tasted good, but I prefer the variety of flavors offered elsewhere. Especially for the price you pay for cannolis in the north end! More...
Top notch pastries. Cash only.
Very friendly folks. Good pastries and not as crowded as Mike's
Delicious pastries always!
OMG! Try to pick just one.
Wow was this place good. The eclairs are better at Sweet Dreams in Statham NH but the lobster tails here are some of the best pastries I've ever had. The cream puff was excellent and the cannoli perfect. More...
Went to Boston for my daughter's b-day weekend and did a google search for a bakery near our hotel that made b-day cakes. Modern Pastry was one of the choices. After checking their website and reading reviews here, I called and ordered the cake - chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. It was absolutely the best b-day cake we have ever had - so delicious I wish I got a larger cake to bring leftovers home. We head to Boston 3-4 times a year. Modern Pastry will be a regular stop when we're down there. More...
Very beautiful desserts. Stand in line for take out, sit down for service. This is a cash only organization, so be prepared. I have to eat gluten free and had a cannoli... the first gf cannoli I have found since being diagnosed with celiac in 2005. It was wonderful. Good coffee. Friendly service, although a little slow. More...
So this is another place with those fancy string tied boxes and canolis. They apparently have more custom combinations, better service than Mike's I dare say. Would recommend this place. If only at least for the slightly friendlier service, which means alot. More...
I have been coming here for 65 years. The Best.
Hot tip, you can take these fancy pastry downstairs to the full bar under the bakery!
The Strawberry Shortcake was the best I've ever had. Overall an amazing place.
Awesome espresso and pastries. A wonderful Authentic-Boston experience!
The cannoli here was really good. They pipe it fresh, and you can build your own. Still crispy and held up great 2 hours after buying.
Carlos A. Gallardo
Good coffee, good pastries and good fights on Hanover from time to time. ;)
Great service here in this shop in the North End. There is some seating here, but if you do you have to let the waiters take your order. Food and drinks were good. The cannolis were good, but you can also try Mike's Pastry nearby which is famous for them. More...
Best place for espresso and cappuccino
I've always been a Mike's girl but today they were wiped out of all the things I love. So thankfully modern is right there and I was really impressed. I was looking for rainbow cakes specifically and didn't see any but when ask the girl said ya we have a bunch totally made my day!!! More...
Went to the Modern Underground Bar and Grill. Had an awsome time nice service. The drinks and appetizers were wonderful. Need to go in to eat a meal or Sunday Brunch. More...
Best place in Boston for Italian pastries
Wonderful pastries and great staff. If you don’t want to wait in line and are happy to stay for a while you can sit inside and get table service. Their drip coffee is amongst the best I’ve had! It was so good I bought a bag of it; straight from the machine (meaning they don’t have bags for consumers, they just fill and weigh plastic bags). Then if you have time, check out Modern Underground! It’s a great spot for a lunch break and is right below! More...
Definately worth the wait. We had the cannoli. The filling was light and flavorful, and the shell was still crisp!
The BEST connolo in Boston. Super old school. Much better than Mike’s. Just ask any neighborhood local or the old guys. Amazing Torrone too. Tons of flavors. Pistachio.
Modern’s or Mike’s - you hear this a lot being from the Boston area. I myself have always been partial to Mike’s - however with tourists the line can stretch down the block. Modern is the less touristy spot with indoor seating and cafe and great pastries. The staff is nice and fast, and the cafe space is very nice with open windows to the street so you can watch the people going by. Also worth mentioning is that they have a nice bar area in the basement here. More...
Fresh cannoli and pastry. Delicious! Bring cash
This is the place to get your Italian pastry! They have waitress service and you can get your cappuccino there!
We had a paragina and a tiramisu pastry and black tea. All were excellent. I prefer the Modern to Mike's Pastries. Better and fresher. Highly recommend.
Great canolli! I preferred this pastry shop over the one down the street! Shell was perfect, filling was creamy and not too sweet and the ratio of shell to filling was perfect!
Best pastries in the NorthEnd
Great Pastries and Cakes but be prepared to wait
By far the best pastry shop in the North End! This has been my favorite bakery since I was a little girl. They expanded a few years ago but still deliver the same great quality & service. Love the cannoli's filled with fresh ricotta with mini chocolate chips or chantilly cream in a chocolate dipped shell. Pairs well with a hot or iced spiked cappuccino! More...
So much better than the other bakery.
Line moves fast - don’t be intimidated! Bring cash though!
Delicious. Bought peanut butter cup for daughter - so good. Bought eclair - yum. Bought chocolate covered strawberries - amazing!
This place is well-known for the pastries of course, but it also has what I genuinely consider to be the best cake I've ever eaten. I've made it a tradition now to always order a customized cake for my partner's birthday; they're all delicious, reasonably priced and easy to order online. Definitely take a chance to branch out from the cannolis and order a cake, cupcake or pastry here! More...
The Modern, ironically, is a classic. Though not the oldest pastry shop in the North end. This is a CASH only establishment, so bring your money. The pastries are well made. The coffee drinks are lovely as well. If you want table service, don't go to the counter. Ask for a table. Once seated, the service is good. Try the tortone as they've a wide variety of flavors. The panettone is also exquisite. More...
Great looking desserts. We had the cannolies and they were quickly gone. Crisp outside, with a creamy interior. Couldn't go wrong. Just be sure to have cash, as they don't take a card. More...
One of the North End bakeries you need to try
Best pastry in the area.
Wonderful Italian pastries
excellent place. Mike's still #1 though
Lives up to the hype. Your taste buds will be happy you waited in line (usually about 10 minutes or so). Grab the tiramisu, top notch.
Excellent pastries and great service.
Nothing to say, but wow!
Wow. Best pastries ever.
Wonderful neighborhood pastry shop. Support local business and shop here for a pastry and coffee. Staff was busy and accommodating to my order and questions. They do have an expectation that you will approach the counter with your order ready, especially when the line is out the door. Everyone recommended the cannoli. Chose regular, chocolate dipped on the ends, or chocolate covered. Next is filling with traditional ricotta, vanilla cream, chocolate cream, or a couple others. Finally you dip the ends with chocolate chips, almonds, or pistachios. It's a fun order and process! As you figure out how you want your cannoli, enjoy the showcases of other fine treats. More...
Modern Pastry fills the cannolis fresh to order, unlike Mike’s Pastry. They don’t get soggy like Mike’s. Modern is infinitely better, confirmed via direct taste tests and many, many visits to Modern over the years.
Delectable baked goods
Everything is very yummy
great selection havent tried what i got yet but im sure it will be good cant wait to try it i would definitly go back next time im in boston
I think the secret is already out, but Modern Pastry is better than Mike's! There are hardly ever lines here as all the silly tourists think there is only one place to go. Jokes on them! This place has all of the best pastries you could dream of. Love their cannoli and their torrone! More...
Very good pastries and coffee, friendly staff
The pastries are great, but definitely a small step below Mike's. It's a different style altogether, and certainly delicious, but still remains my second choice in the North End.
Awesome we picked up food for coworkers and they took care of us. Thanks from New Orleans
We did the classic taste test. We purchased one plain ricotta cannoli from Mike's and one from Modern. Both were better than anything I ever had, possibly only comparing to a cannoli I had at Vaccaro's in Baltimore's Little Italy. Modern's slightly beat out Mike's with each bite. The shell is thinner than Mike's, flakier and tastier (just by a bit). The filling tasted more like ricotta and was smoother. Both were excellent and I would recommend trying both. Mike's has many more flavors and I think it's a tourist favorite. Modern focuses primarily on the classic ricotta cannoli. Modern's is smaller than Mike's for about the same price. Service was quick. Note that you should walk to the back of the store because the line at the main pastry case may be in the way of the cannoli register. More...
Awesome pastery. Recommend stopping here. It is so worth it.
Delicious deserts and very reasonable prices.
Ravioli ravioli give me the canolioli
Ooo that lobster tail was delishes!!!!
They serve the best cannolis and whoopie pies that I've ever had in the Boston metropolitan area.
Vamsi Krishna Aalla
Chocolate raspberry mousse cake was very delicious
What a wonderful place for dessert. Quite a wonderful selection. We settled on the canolli and it was among the best we ever had.
One of the BEST bakeries I have been! Canolis are absolutely recommended!
Best real Italian pastry and breakfast to
I am from Texas and was there 2 weeks ago. The staff was very friendly, especially that tattooed guy. The pastries were delicious!!! I'll come back for sure next time I'm in Boston. And I love that there is a sit down area. More...
