So come across modarc but im from a building and civil engineering back ground myself, I knew a bit and just wanted some designs done. How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The main issue with loft conversions is headroom. The key dimension is 2m of headroom at the top step of the new staircase with 2m headroom maintained throughout the proposed stairwell.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
First of all a measured survey of the existing loft area will need to be carried out. This will determine what space we have to work with. We then produce detailed drawings of the existing loft area and start working up some conceptual plans of the proposed space. Planning permission may be required, it is worth consulting a professional to ensure you have the right permissions in place prior to starting on site. If planning permission is required, a planning application will be submitted to the necessary local authority. Once planning permission is in place, you will then need to carry out a building regulation application, prior to work starting on site.
What do you love most about your job?
No two projects are the same. I love a challenge and a seeing a building or plot transform into that idea that has gone from clients head - architectural designers head - drawings - on site with contractor. Great satisfaction in the process.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have always had a clear idea on how I see the future of building and design, this has not always been able to take place under previous employers, when you have a strong desire to succeed, you can only do this with your own business.
