What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
If I can take a photo that really captured the subject's personality, whether that's a spontaneous laugh of a moment of quiet contemplation, I've done my job properly.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Ultimately, I'm interested in what YOU want. Many photographers do a great job posing their subjects and capturing great images of them. My passion is capturing those memories, those one-off moments that are so often lost or you might never even have seen.
What do you love most about your job?
Photography is my passion. What gives me the greatest joy is to capture something, a pose, a silly face, a belly laugh, that others might have missed. I grew up in an era of formal, posed family pictures that, although they are much-loved, often failed to capture the subject's personality.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Honestly, I've been taking photos for over 49 years now, but it never occurred to me that they would be of much interest to anyone else,and certainly that someone would pay for them.
It was a friend who was getting married who asked me to do the photography for their wedding. She loved the photos that I posted on social media, and said that the candid, unposed approach was exactly what she was looking for. It was a hugely daunting prospect, but I had a great time, learned a lot, and she and her husband were delighted with the results. It all just snowballed from there, really...
Why should our clients choose you?
I'm friendly but professional, and extremely low-maintenance. Just throw me into the middle of a party or family gathering and I'll just get on with capturing memories.
That's not to say that I won't do more formal, posed shots if that's what you want. After all, you're the boss!
