Mike taught music theory and answered any questions. He does not limit his teachings to just learning to read music and playing piano. He will also works with students to explore what type of music they enjoy. My son took lessons with him for over twelve years, and he was always comfortable with Mike. He was an awesome mentor. One of the things my son enjoyed was Mike did not insist he hold his hands a particular way. Lastly, Mike cultivated a life-long love for playing piano! More...

My boys took lessons from Mr Evans from the ages of 6-14. They are two years apart in age and he knew the best way to teach and keep them engaged. Other interests pulled them from the piano, but they have a strong foundation on which they can always rely. More...

I am an adult piano student who had played piano for years, but not in a long while, and was interested in learning jazz and rock music. Mike is an excellent teacher; he is a great communicator, enthusiastic and fun in his manner of teaching. I had a great experience as his student, and would highly recommend him as a teacher. Mr. Evans (Mike) is a unique piano teacher. He has a wealth of knowledge in music and music theory and conveys it well for students of all ages and every level. Specifically for our son, who has been with Mike for ~6 years until he left for college, Mike was able to figure out very quickly the type of music our son liked and he adopted the curriculum accordingly. Besides piano, we turned to Mike to give our son a "boost" on his advanced math lessons and Mike had spent much more time in these lessons that he had charged us for. However, what impressed us most was the way Mike taught our son how to love and music and gave him the tools to continue learn how to play new pieces on his own. We wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Evans as a teacher, be it piano or math, to everyone, young and old(er). More...

Mike taught piano to our son and daughter for several years. Their desire to continue lessons through high school, with other interests competing for their time, was very much a product of Mike’s customized and positive approach. He provided them the opportunity to focus on different genres of music while developing their technical skills, and worked with our daughter on composition when that peaked her interest. His patience and encouragement were constant and they were fortunate have Mike as a teacher. More...

Mike has taught my daughter piano for a year. She started with virtually NO piano experience. She has learned so quickly, our family is amazed. Mike has a great way with children and really fosters and promotes growth in many areas. He's easy to work with and so nice. Mike has a love for many styles of music, which is perfect, as we have an eclectic taste in music - he's knowledgeable and helps customize individual pieces and genres of music to fit my daughter's learning curve on the piano - he's fantastic. Thank you Mike, for teaching my daughter lessons and skills that will last a lifetime. You rock! A+++ More...

I have been taking lessons from Mike now for about 6 months. In that short time he has done more for my playing than i have in the past 6 years. His Jazz knowledge is incredible. He has a wonderful, encouraging, un-intimidating personality. He also is quick to identify weaknesses and provide drills to completely rectify them. I'm fortunate to have found such a great teacher. Mike has taught my 9 year old daughter for three wonderful years now. I couldn't think of a better piano teacher for her.

Mike's knowledge of many styles and flavors of music fit her perfectly, and his ability to customize pieces for her skill level remain an invaluable part of her instruction. His custom arrangements of the songs she loves to listen to in the car, give her that extra drive and push to improve quickly every single week.

I cannot state how fantastic Mike's abilities, knowledge, kindness and patience are, and how much he has helped with her self confidence and piano skills - these skills will be with her for life. We will continue lessons with Mike as long as possible. Thank you Mike!

Q&As

I have loved music for as long as I can remember. The most gratifying aspect of being a PIANO TEACHER is forming relationships with students and parents and being a source of growth and enrichment in their lives. As I watch students improve their musicianship and be able to play more advanced music, I know that I am helping them develop a gift that will bring them pleasure and fulfillment for the rest of their lives.

PROVIDING LIVE MUSIC is a gift that I enjoy sharing with and entertaining others.

As a TUTOR I find satisfaction in helping people have a better understanding of their coursework or standardized test, and the help them achieve their goals.

I worked for a community music school that had rigid policies toward students and I wanted the freedom to treat students and parents in exactly the manner in which I would want to be treated if I or my child were taking piano lessons. This organization also took a large percentage of tuition that was not scaled to studio size. As a result once every teacher built up enrollment there existed incentive to leave and teach independently. I enjoy having only my students and parents to be accountable to and to have the freedom to use my own professional judgment to teach in a manner that I believe is in the best interest of the student as opposed to an organization.

As a musical performer and also academic tutor I have always had my own business.

As a PIANO TEACHER I am dedicated, committed and willing to go the extra mile to serve the interests and needs of all my students. I have one nine year old for example who has requested to learn pop songs by the Doors, Beatles, Jim Croce and others. Typically published sheet music at this level does not exist or exist with any quality, so I use my training to write out the songs for her on my own time and at no charge. This is just example to my commitment to the needs and growth of my students. I am also known to be very patient, kind and encouraging particularly to younger students. I seek to be an adult authority figure in the life of a school aged child who is given freedom to participate in the selection of pieces to study. This demonstrates my respect, enables them to learn pieces of interest and requires them to take responsibility for completing music they have selected. I also am flexible with scheduling and make up lessons to provide parents and adult students the greatest possible value for lessons that have been paid for. My business philosophy and decisions does indeed center around how I would want to be treated as a student or parent.

As a PERFORMING MUSICIAN I provide impeccable authentic arrangements of popular songs, and I completed a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies at one of the nation's top music schools - by some professional organizations the top national school of music.

As a TUTOR I graduated from the University of North Carolina with a 3.95/4.00 grade point average, but I not only have the knowledge to tutor but as the son of public school teachers have had excellent teaching modeled to me all of my life. I excel as well in communication skills and have a knack for fostering knowledge. If a student becomes stuck on understanding a concept I know how to devise alternate approaches on the spot until the student experiences a breakthrough in obtaining that knowledge.

Educational research has shown for a number of years that their is often a STRONG RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MUSICAL AND MATHEMATICAL APTITUDE. This is definitely true in my case. I have been tutoring the following subjects since 1985: MATH through three semesters of calculus, STATISTICS (A.P. statistics), and also CHEMISTRY.

I am available to provide LIVE MUSIC for private events. Having a Master's degree from a top university music school, I provide instrumental jazz piano for any type of event. In addition to solo piano I am able to provide a jazz trio or quartet with the most experienced jazz musicians and jazz professorsin the Triad area.

I also have a repertoire of over 1,000 pop, rock and R&B songs since the 1950s, the beginning of the rock and roll era. I am able to perform these songs instrumentally or playing and singing. My YouTube channel can be found at the following link. This channel contains more than 300 sample songs from my popular repertoire: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4Rj-A5S-Zl-P3nlzEEY-ZA?view_as=subscriber
