Went for our anniversary for lunch. Had a stunning meal, the food was outstanding. Service was good. We were surprised with a cupcake to celebrate our day.

The restaurant tries to deliver high end service and nearly achieves that (although giving me the soup spoon when it should have gone to my wife was one of a few little niggles) but the customers when we were there were or smart casual.
The food for both of us was really delicious and, being off of the menu du jour, was well priced.
Bonus extra marks for them too as they overheard it was our wedding anniversary and gave us a little cupcake to help us celebrate.

Service was appalling again !!!
We go here quite a lot but to be honest I think we will not bother anymore. the service is not up to standard anymore and the excuses are always the same sickness or staff issues.

We spent a lot of money here and expect 100 percent from these guys but the reality is you have to ask for drinks, bread and water. The couple next to us had most of the meal with no wine offered. No offer for money off the bill which you will get from low brow restaurants.
I would spend your hard earnt elsewhere until Chapter one recognises that they should look after there customers whilst they are in the restaurant and not offer lame excuses for the fact that the service they provide is sub standard.

We have been here a few times recently and I am pleased that the service has improved.

We were looked after properly. Coats taken to hang up, bread, water, wine (which was excellent) and food was great.

I've been to this restaurant approximately a dozen times over the last 10 years and it's been fairly consistent. They had a wobble a couple of years ago and lost their Michelin star, but I've been back a few times since and it seems to have improved again.
I did once go a bit off piste and order an eel terrine which was not good, but if you stick to sensible choices instead of assuming that everything on the menu should be excellent, you won't go too far wrong. It's good value for money at around 1 Michelin star quality.

Great food, friendly service, a little slow when really busy but an exceptionally popular pub and they give you plenty of warning of the wait for food as everything is cooked fresh. We went as a large family birthday party for Sunday lunch and they accommodated us plus the 7, 4, 3 and 1 year olds with ease and near an open corner with space for them to stretch their legs between courses.
