The condos around Shops on Don Mills are so lucky to have McEwan's to shop at - this place really caters to condo living: Really yummy prepared foods, nice cuts of meat and fresh fish, and gourmet selections of oils and bites for entertaining. I really like buying the various varieties of cheeses, oil and vinegar's, meats and fish. The sweets here are really yummy as well. It's expensive, no doubt, and you can probably buy the same tomato and cucumber for less at the Metro in the same plaza. But I think this place caters to the immediate condo dwellers that don't mind buying high quality items for 1 or 2 people. Buying for a big family at McEwans just doesn't make economic sense. McEwan's is an upscale grocery store opened by mark McEwan. Its located at the back (or what I call the back ) of shops of don mills. If you read about a fancy product used in a recipe, odds are its here. If you have a lot of money you can come buy bottles of olive oil or balsamic vinegar for a hundred plus dollars. I am one hundred percent certain they taste like the nectar of the gods, and if you happen to buy one, I'm more than willing to help you try it out (I am nice like that ).There is a large seating area when you first walk in that is full of lovely looking and tasting prepared food, sandwiches, salads, etc.Note: It can be slightly pricey, but everything is made with very high quality products so you get what you pay for!One thing, you absolutely need to check out the treat area. There are beautiful fresh made breads and pastries, and delicious cakes and cookies. Each more delicious than the next. As you can see, I love my sweet things!! I have always imagined grocery stores being somewhat of a cemetery for dead animals, with different classifications and hierarchies. Only, we do not go to the cemetery and purchase the parts of corpses for consumption.  But imagine, if those of us who lived a healthful and organic life with  the option range freely, and to be content with our loved ones rendering us to the high-end cemeteries, whereas the less fortunate of us are subjugated to more conventional, or even sub-par resting places. This is the dignity we give to animals. To classify quality of consumable goods with this standard as acceptable is...well, actually who cares?Of course, this are not how we measure and reward human beings in death. We are much more civilized. We do it with money. With this ideology, McEwan's certainly ranks amongst what we consider to be the patrician of retail establishments--a luxury temporary resting place for the more 'fortunate' livestock of men.  Mark McEwan is Canada's version of a celebrity chef--which is to say he is not a celebrity. Many high-end restaurants in the city can associate themselves to his name, most notably ONE restaurant at the Hazelton Lanes Hotel. Since accomplishing success and notoriety within the Canadian borders, it is only appropriate that when the McEwan name is uttered; most people have no idea who the hell he is. What is the man to do if he is not to open his own grocery store?I know of only one man who possess the palate for $400 balsamic vinegar, and if he were to ever lose his fortune, the allowance from his parents would relegate him to do his own grocery shopping, and where else would he go if not to McEwan Gourmet Grocery Store?Green tea roses from Ecuador, fine teas from Britain (thus from China), olive oil so virgin that it's almost illegal to sell them, and fruits so neatly arranged that the price for removing them from their neatly stacked positions feels more like a fine. This place is stocked from top to bottom with things I've never heard of, didn't know was edible, and ingredients that would require me to take a course in order to cook them. That is the fundamental problem with this place; it is modeled after the vision of an accomplished chef. What is a simpleton like me going to do with an $800 rack of prime rib? I barely know what to do with the $30 jar of foie gras that's been sitting in my refrigerator for the last month. There is a reasonable selection of pre-made and partially pre-made food items here. I hardly imagine that this location would be able to retain many regular customers from the public school nearby for lunch. I don't imagine those kids either have the appreciation, or the financial backing to become frequent patrons to Mr. McEwan's brown rice sushi, almond croissants, and juices so not from Concentrate it might as well be available only via DIY stations using the store's selection of fresh fruits. Cost of fine for fruit removal not included. This store offers some very unique food choices to spice up any household's conventional kitchen creations. The seafood and game meats are very high quality. It is a pleasant experience picking out the more foreign products from their shelves, despite the unpleasantness of paying for them. McEwan's adheres to obviously very strict sanitary standards, and a comparable level of customer service. It is one of the few places in Toronto where royal (or Russian) caviar can be found for similar prices that you'd pay in a Yorkville restaurant. It cannot be denied that this is a very fun place to do some food shopping. It is anything from commonplace, and the staff here will go to the end of the Earth to help you in every detail of your purchase, including inquiring with the onsite chefs as to how to prepare their products. So seldom can the word 'luxury' be associated with a grocery store, but McEwan's proves that as long as you are willing to spend, they are willing to sell--not sure if that's a realistic practice germane to consumerism. Looking for something in particular? You'll most likely find it here. In fact, there most likely will be 'a guy' for that thing you are trying to find. Just try buying some caviar, there's a guy for that.If I were some fancy free-range french risen cow destine for the slaughter house (as most cows are) and planning for my semi-final resting place, McEwan Gourmet Grocery Store would be on the top of my list. Eg Jones and Mash sodas, and my favorite coconut popsicles from Chunk O' Fruit etc. All the produce, meats and seafood were fresh and high quality. Great place to come when in a cooking rut to get some inspiration and to source hard to find snacks, drinks and ingredients (such as chipotle peppers!). I have loved cool Grocery Stores all the way back to my first trip to Zabars, Fairway Market and Dean & Deluca in NYC in the early 90's.  I was anxious to see Mark McEwans new food store last year and stopped in again this trip to see how they have progressed since last years opening.  Don Mills has not been a good experience for many retailers but McEwans seemed reasonably busy.Overall the merchandising is great.  The fish and meat departments were amazing with a good selection of pre-marinated take home vacu-sealed fish and meats.  Not sure why more gourmet stores don't do that.  Best way to cook fish.  Really liked the canning products.  Simple and great presentation.  Store shelves are well marked and the layout was easy to navigate around with good customer interaction.  Staff were friendly, knowledgable and very helpful.  The cappuccino bar was using an automatic espresso machine which was disappointing.  I know it avoids straff training issues but it is impossible to control the milk temperature and I hate 180 degree milk in my cappuccino.  The cappuccino was a 6 out of 10 and it should be at least an 8 out of 10 for this type of demographic and store.Overall great store and wish I lived close by.  Very similar to Meinhardts in Vancouver, which I also love, but Meinhardts has better cappuccinos. For example Starbucks ground coffee which sells for $7.99 at Loblaws, is $9.49 at McEwan.  That is a huge mark-up and you can get many of these products at my cheaper prices elsewhere. More...

I was excited to go to McEwan ever since I heard about it. It isn't your average grocery store, and for that reason, I won't be doing my regular shopping there. But, for special events or just to try something new, I will visit. There are a lot of prepared foods which look nice, but what I was most excited about was all the different sauces, marinades, pastas, CHEESES, oh man.. I was like a kid in a candy store. There was pasta made of sweet potatoes and now I'm kicking myself for not picking up a package. There is a good selection of vegan-friendly foods, organic foods, and even a bit of cook wear (McEwan brand, of course). It is a neat little store. Yes, over priced, but I was expecting so. The international section is a bit of a joke though. Maybe half of an aisle, at most. I was hoping to discover some interesting finds there. Oh, on top of the foods offered, I have to note that everyone from cashiers to the people behind the counter at the deli were incredibly helpful and friendly. More...

The Shops at Don Mills is a great reno. It is like the small town-outdoor-east end version of Yorkdale. A little bit of everything at the medium to high end price points. I was quite excited to hear that McEwan had opened. I went early in the am when it first opened to make sure I could properly browse without the crowds. The store itself is not that big, but most "gourmet" grocery stores are not. The layout is great, nice and spread out. The prepared foods are at the front of the store, with the packaged products just before the cash. The customer service is fantastic. Everyone I interacted with was extremely helpful, down to earth and not pushy. Is McEwan going to be a regular grocery store of choice for me? No. But, here are the circumstances I think it will be useful for most consumers that can only afford occasional visits: - treats for yourself (like the Belgian chocolate I picked up. Was hard not to press my nose against the glass of the chocolate truffle display) - special dinners/dates (great premade north 44 approved food...saw some mouth watering meats, salads and desserts. Not cheap, $7/8 for fresh hummus) - gifts (saw butter tarts that I know my dad would love. Am interested to see what they will do come Christmas time) - speciality items (when your recipe calls for some Mexican spices...they have a whole section....you will be covered) I really liked McEwan. Am looking forward to trying the sliced turkey and speciality rice I got!! They have a kitchen upstairs that they make all the meats/salads, etc. It is worth the visit...plus they do sell Kiva's products : ) More...
