Thumbs-up after going there on New Year's Eve with friends. It was busy, but it didn't feel crowded. The booths are comfortable, and the food is very good. My wife and I shared the 12 oz. steak frites and each had an appetizer, which was more than enough for the two of us. The steak was especially good.  Good desserts, too. Our service was friendly and attentive. I really appreciate that they let us linger at the table after we finished our meal, despite it being a busy night (there were some open tables, so it wasn't as if we were keeping people standing in the lobby). Can't judge the drinks because we were with non-drinking friends, so we didn't want to do anything awkward. More...

Max's On Broad has been on my list of places to try for quite a while but since it always looks so busy when I'm in the area, I've put it off. I finally fought my fear of a wait and stopped in for dinner on a weekend night. It actually wasn't too busy at all. I was sat upstairs and my server was very nice and attentive. I'm a sucker for deviled eggs, so I requested the crab deviled eggs as a starter. The flavors weren't for me but I'm sure someone who loves crab more than I do would probably really enjoy them. My entree of the duck breast with fingerling potatoes was really nice. The duck was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The added cranberry was a great topper. The potatoes were also the perfect doneness but I did add salt to taste. I'd happily come back and try more from their enticing menu. More...

Great food, and service. Everyone at table had something different and everyone loved what they got. Abiance is amazing and tgey have a  wonderful view, as well. Highly recommend. Only complaint is they could use a few more less aggressive beer options. If you love Belgian beers (Dubel, Tripel, sours, etc..) and other complex beers they have a huge selection. No Pilsners and only Lagers are Bud  and Stella. Maybe add a Paulaner Lager, Pilsner Urquell, Haf Brau Whit and/or a few more local beers like Legend Brown and Devils Backbone Vienna Lager to round out the Beer selection. That would be my only suggestion. More...

Dinner felt like a solid 3.5, but I'll round up for a) the ambience and b) the awesome service. Came here for a date night! Like other people have mentioned, it does feel like you've been dropped in the middle of quaint lil European town. Try to get seated upstairs! We had evening sunlight streaming in through the windows and a great view with dinner. We started at the bar, and the bartender was attentive and friendly! Our server was also great and very helpful explaining the dishes. The food was good, but probably didn't warrant our $100+ bill. We got the deviled eggs (recommend!) which had a fun spin, mixed with crab and trout roe. We also got the steak frites and waterzooi. Requested steak medium-rare but it definitely came out on the medium-well side. I was disappointed by how dry it was, and the herb butter on top was pretty, but couldn't (and shouldn't have to) save it. Fries were ok, kind of reminded me of McDonalds fries, but I like those fries, so whatever. It came with what I think was meant to be an aioli, which unfortunately tasted like a spoonful of straight up mayo. The waterzooi was DELICIOUS and so unique. It had artic char which was perfectly crispy on the outside and nice and tender on the inside. The array of veggies were a lovely touch. The broth was a tad on the salty side, but still enjoyable, so the dish is a winner in my book. Overall, I think I'd come back for late night drinks and some apps, but probably wouldn't want to drop that much money on the entrees again. More...

Came here for brunch over Memorial Day weekend on Sunday and absolutely loved the décor and venue! I don't know Richmond, VA area very well and I can't comment on how safe the area was but there were quite a few homeless people around the area. The restaurant itself is extremely cute and very very well decorated. I loved the staircase! We were seated on the second flood which was nice because all the windows were open and it was a very hot day. We all ended up getting brunch food and the dishes were all extremely generous portions. It was also really delicious- especially their eggs benedict! Would definitely come back if I end up in Richmond again and would love to try dinner here. More...

5 stars for service alone, not withstanding an excellent meal. My wife and I came here for our third anniversary (our first visit was the night we got engaged). The atmosphere is the perfect balance of intimate and social, with a great range of seating choices in between. Our server Mark earned the 5 stars with attentive service and the perfect degree of rapport; he recognized the significance of our occasion with a complimentary round of the house Cava and a dessert (at his own suggestion to the bar and kitchen... we were flattered that the restaurant recognized and celebrated our night with us). My wife loved his suggestion of the Waterzooi, and I thoroughly enjoyed the steak frites. I highly recommend Max's for a special occasion/date night, and be sure to ask for Mark if he's there- he will make sure that your evening is special and that you're taken care of. More...

There are different aspects about this restaurant that should be noted. First off, I am retired and not much for stepping outside of my comfort zone as far as dining goes. My daughter convinced me this would be a great place to go for my birthday dinner with her. I'm glad she did. This is a dining experience, not an all-you-can-eat place. It will be a special place for the two of us in the future. For starters, they offer valet parking. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT! Especially on a Saturday evening downtown. Takes an anxiety edge off your experience. Plus, give them your ticket when you're finishing your coffee, and your car will be waiting for you when you leave. The restaurant interior setting is very nicely done. I would not suggest dining outside; panhandlers occasionally pass by looking for a handout. The interior of the restaurant is very tastefully done. It gives you the feel of a quaint French restaurant in Paris, or a small place down in New Orleans. Not spacious, but also not packed too tightly with tables. Just nicely broken up into smaller dining areas, plus an upstairs if you like that. And if you want a nice quiet place where you can have a quiet intimate conversation sans yelling, this is definitely it. Waiting staff - as other reviewers have noted, you can't ask for a more attentive, pleasant group of people, starting with the greeters. Everyone has a smile to offer, and a demeanor that makes you feel welcome. And our waiter was Will. He couldn't have been more accommodating to us, answering any questions we had about the menu. He bent over backwards to provide a few extra table items to us upon request. He was attentive but not constantly hovering over us as some waiters do. Our orders were brought out in a timely manner. No extensive waiting. We started with the deviled eggs. My daughter and I shared the appetizer; just enough to please the palette. For entrees, I had the pork chop with the grits. Very tasty. (Suggestion - get some sharper steak knives).  My daughter had the tuna and she loved it. The wine selections were excellent as well. Don't leave without dessert and a small coffee. We had the WPA cherry pie, and the baked Alaska. Both very tasty. Some dining reviewers complain about the limited one page menu. I did not find it so restrictive at all. Much easier to make a selection than a 4 page menu. Maybe check it out online before you arrive. It was a great evening and a wonderful dining experience! More...

We went here a few weeks ago to celebrate my mom's birthday. We had a sweet server and our night overall was lovely. We appreciated and took advantage of the free valet parking, especially in downtown. The views we had from our table were amazing and the memory was great. My mom and husband had the french onion soup to start. They also both ordered the filet mignon while I ordered the short ribs. I will say, my short ribs were very fatty so I ended up sending them back. I ordered a filet instead and it was perfect. The manager came out to talk with our table. He was very understanding and went above and beyond the call of duty to set things right. Customer service was impeccable. We also ended up ordering 3 desserts (hey, it's a cause for celebration)! The baked Alaska (of course!), coke cake, and cream brulee. All were good. Both mom and hubby thought the baked Alaska was the best (which is ironic, because both of them would choose cream brulee as their first choice at any restaurant). I actually thought the cream brulee was better than most but liked the coke cake the most (it was a bit richer than l expected but l love a dense cake, it was just short of brownie consistency--very good!). Overall, a wonderful restaurant for a memorable evening or for just a beautiful night out on the town. We will certainly come back, especially due to the manager and overall excellent service we received there. Thank you for making my mom's last night on the east coast a wonderful memory for us all. First time visiting Max's and it was great. We came in for a lovely Sunday morning brunch and sat upstairs at one of the tables in front of the window. We had a spectacular view of the city and our server Miranda was very nice and courteous. She was so funny, fast, and professional.  Just a star! Miranda started off by brining us fresh water to our table and told us about the daily specials. We ordered mimosas for the table and the drinks were brought with fresh hot powdered doughnuts. Delicious! We ordered eggs any style with a side of pancakes and a chesepeke omelet per our server's recommendation. Our food got to us quickly and was cooked perfectly. Taste was exactly what we were looking for. Hit the mark. The Chesapeake omelet was the star of the show. I love seafood and was stuffed FULL of crabmeat. Tonight was our first night at Max's On Broad. We wanted something within walking distance and without long waits -- we made a reservation 20 minutes before arriving just in case it was really busy. The location is very cute. As a native Frenchie, I was reminded of my Parisien cafes and streets by the outdoor seating area (which I can't wait to frequent in the spring and summer months!). We walked in and were immediately seated upstairs. The downstairs bar is really nice with a few tables, but upstairs is much more intimate. Oh, and I love music -- and their music playlist tonight was amazing!!! A little Alabama Shakes, Lorde, Amy Winehouse, Adèle, etc. ... goood hits! Apparently they recently changed the menu (so for those who may frequent this place and expect some staples, they may not be available).  But since it was our first time, I couldn't compare. However, I knew that I was going to start the meal with their French Onion soup (because, duh!)  and it did NOT disappoint. Extremely flavorful, perfect size, and the cheese crust was divine! I devoured it instantly. I ordered the short ribs for my dinner meal and I will say the waiter warned us that the texture was much fattier than normal due to the way they were cooked, but I ordered it anyway. i was not expecting so much fat, and could not cut into it to eat it because of the texture but the sides that came with the dish were great. T got the pork chop and we both loved the cranberry sauce that topped the chop. Yum. When the waiter came around and asked me how we liked everything, I think he could tell that the ribs were not my thing (maybe it was the fact I put it on the side plate! But again I can't fault any one because the waiter did warn us)! Nonetheless, he told a manager who came to the table and offered to get me something else and kindly removed my dinner plate from our bill.  That's great customer service and I was really thankful for that. I can't wait to return due to great service, that amazing soup, and quite possibly solely for the fact that the space reminds me of a Parisien brasserie in the 9eme arrondissement back home More...

After months, we finally made it here for brunch. I think the anticipation from reviewing the menu may have created set my expectations a bit high. The place was quaint with euro bistro music playing. Our server was good...she was pretty attentive except that she never asked me if I wanted more coffee. But other than that, she was great. The two items we really wanted to try, escargots and the Monte Cristo, we were told were both taken off the menu. That was a big disappointment for me and my son since we didnt about an alternate. We ordered calamari which we all enjoyed. It had plenty of tentacles (my fav) and extremely tender. Battered perfectly and not oily...one of the best l've had. They brought us beignets but only 3. There's 4 of us. I felt our server would have at least brought 4 right? Our little one ordered the breakfast poutine which had shredded pork and an egg on top. The pork was lacking flavor but the rest was good. Hubby ordered the pancake platter. He said it was good like a typical breakfast...just ordinary. My oldest son and I ordered the waffle with Toulouse sausage and eggs with mournay sauce. He asked for chocolate waffle instead which our server subbed out with no issues. Didnt realize everything came on top of the waffle but ok then. The mournay sauce was a cheesy buchemel gravy. It had really good flavor and actually tasted great with the waffle. Overall we had a high price ordinary breakfast. Maybe dinner service would have been better for us. More...

My scallops were expertly seared and served atop buttery onions with broccoli rabe and a chipotle sauce. It was divine !
