Friday Dec 20th we had dinner at Max's chop house it was excellent as usually. My wife and myself have been coming to the Chophouse for years, before that Boom's. It's a great place to have cocktails and a fine dinner. The only problem we had when we paid the check we split it with the other couple, we both signed and left a very generous tip. Upon getting in our car Rebecca our server came outside yelling where were the signed checks. I was not happy with her mannerisms she was rude, I went inside to check the table it had been cleared of our signed bills. I told her that she said that was not the case another words we took the checks. I checked my AMEX, the charge was there, It's unfortunate that this occurred but we didn't appreciate being treated like this and there was absolutely no reason for her unprofessional behavior. Steaks were done to perfection. Shareable sides are fantastic to sample several of them. Drinks were well made. The vanilla creme brulee was one of the best I've had.

My latest trip was Friday December 6th. I went with a group of 3 couples. I rated Max's 5 starts when taking the price into consideration because the food was just that good. It outshines the negatives. I still feel like it didn't meet or beat tournedos on ambiance and drinks. The food is great but a few other areas were lacking. I really think it was more like 4.5 but decided to round up rather than down.We loved our food and so did the rest of our party. My wife and I shared a 34ish ounce (can remember the exact number) bone in prime ribeye. Steak was cooked perfectly. Med rare on the inside and crust on the outside. One of the best cooked steaks I have had. The flavor was there too. Better than the dry aged prime I have had everywhere else. The Bordelaise was good and complimented the steak well. The steak was around 95 ala cart but that's reasonable given the amazing taste, size, quality, and preparation. For sides we had carrots and Mac and cheese. Both were great. Carrots were sweet, still a little firm, seasoned well and just overall fantastic. Same with the Mac and cheese. It was flavorful, rich, and awesome. We tried to order the chick liver patte appetizer. Unfortunately they said they were unable to make it. I was looking forward to trying it. Maybe next time.Other couples had a lobster tail, hangar steak, ribeye, and filet. All were good. The drinks were too expensive when compared to other places and not worth it. There were no wines listed by the glass. That was disappointing. I want to be able to look up the wines before I order and that wasn't the case. Having a waiter rattle off a list isn't helpful. The house Pinot was $14. It was ok. It was more of a 9 dollar glass on my oppinion. I couldn't tell you what it was because it's not identified anywhere. The hard alcohol menu in general was not extensive nor was it listed anywhere. I had to ask which types of whisky they had just so I could get a Manhattan. The Manhattan was 15 dollars with a mid shelf bourbon (bulliet). Given that an entire bottle is 30 dollars, a shot being 13 (they list the shot price on your bill then add money for the rest of the drink) is way overpriced. I would expect 8 for a shot and 10 for the Manhattan. The gin Martini was beefeater and was 15. This should have been 10 or 11. The drinks were ok but not amazing. I expected a perfect martini and Manhattan given those prices. Tournedos has an overall better ambiance and experience. Max's is smaller and tables are less private. The bar is right next to the dining area. The staff is overall less "professional". There was almost no Christmas decor anywhere. I am not saying that maxs is bad in any of these regards, but tourenods is just another level and more a the high end experience overall. Max's food was on point though. More...

Great steak, I ordered the ribeye and it was perfectly seared and cooked to temp. The staff was wine knowledgeable and friendly. This was my first time eating here, I usually just go to Black and Blue but the Steak was without question better here. My wife and I ordered 4 ordered of the oysters, the were delicious and fresh you didn't even need lemon or hot sauce, just shoot um straight up. 5 out of 5 for sure. More...

Great Steaks! My buddy and I had a great steak and potatoes dinner tonight here at Max Chophouse. The bread and whipped butter was decent. The steaks were fantastic -- we both had Angus filet mignon, seared on the outside, medium on the inside. I topped it off with au poivre sauce. We finished with a fig galette. The steak was good, the dessert choices were simple, the service was excellent. We will be back! More...

Enjoyed a birthday dinner at Max's last night. Excellent service and food. We had amazing steak tartare, an average Cesar salad to share. My daughter loved her Steak Frites with a side of mayo for the fries. I really enjoyed the pork chop special. They are always welcoming at Max's and work hard to accommodate any requests. I look forward to returning soon for the chicken liver pate which recently returned to the menu. It's always a favorite, but couldn't fit it in this trip. More...

My first visit at Max Chophouse was a good one. We had reservations which were met on time. The steak tartar was fresh and delicious, and the steak we ordered was cooked perfectly how we ordered it. The NY strip with truffle butter on the side was incredibly tasteful and very large. The filet was perfect as well. Constant water service and attentive waitress but not too overly attentive; a good balance. Dim atmosphere, family style seating with a small space as a separation, but still felt by ourselves which was nice but social at the same time. This place seems to get good business by just being known, or word of mouth. The store front is not much to behold, and at night could barely see where to turn into the parking lot in front. We ended dinner off with a little espresso which was quite good. The bill we gave two cards and told her to split evenly which she seemed to charge me twice then refund me and never told me, which annoys me. Other than this, we had a good time. We talked with the couple we came with for a while after we were done and didn’t get rushed out at all. Coat check available and great bar with wine selection as well. More...

We have been to all the high end steakhouses in Rochester and this ranks with the best. I thought I wrote a review promptly, but it vanished so I have to hit the highlights by memory. We shared a large delmonico which was sliced in the kitchen after being cooked to a perfect medium rare. Quality was excellent.Service was efficient, professional, yet casual. Reservations were promptly honored even though we arrived early from GEVA. More...

Kudos to the staff on a particularly hectic night. Our party of 4 decided to stop by Max’s prior to attending a Fringe Festival performance at the Eastman. Upon arriving, it was clear other guests had similar plans. It was also apparent that the restaurant was short on staff. With great aplomb, our order was taken and served, with time to spare! It’s easy to be great when there is no pressure! To be great under pressure is superb! We shall return! More...

Max of Eastman was so good and lucky to be right in the middle of @rochester_fringe Festival which was a blast. Started with an heirloom burrata salad that was excellent followed by a bucatini crab special that was equally as good. Great service and they even threw in some free appetizers because of a connection at the table "always a bonus to have good friends/family". A great spot downtown that is definitely put this one on your list. More...

I entered into a bar area that reminded me of an Edward Hopper painting... a little stark but somehow welcoming just the same. The furnishings appear to be dated but in good condition. We had just dropped our son off at Eastman School of Music went we wandered over to Max'. We had no idea what to expect when we walked in. We were immediately greeted by Miss Margaret who welcomed us in with a warm smile. We started with the littleneck clams, which were amazing. We were already hooked when the spaghetti with crab meat, mint and jalapenos came. It was AMAZING! Overall, our lunch was outstanding. The food was delicious and Miss Margaret was equally as awesome. I chose Max for a business dinner and was definitely not disappointed... Max Chophouse resides in a little, non-descript plaza on Monroe Ave. I've driven by 100 times and never noticed it. I absolutely love these little places hidden in plain sight... certainly not much to look at from the street. More...

We had a very good meal. I would still recommend tourenedos over Max's. I prefer Max's over black and blue. We had 22oz bone in strip. It was essentially a 16oz normal strip because when the steak came out it was already separated. I don't think I would opt for the 22 oz again. The steak was cooked correctly and tasted great. Full flavored meat. Better than black and blue but not as good as tourenedos. Crab cakes were great. I'm not usually a fan of them normally but these blew me away. Very rich and not even a hint of fishiness. The bourdelaise sauce was great. The best I've had anywhere. The baked macaroni side was fantastic. Definitely recommend ordering it. It was rich and heavy but really great. The mushroom side and brussel sprout side were good but not great. Again, better than black and blue but not as good as tourenedos. Our table of four wasnt seated until 40 minutes after our reservation. We didn't sit down for out 7:30 reservation until 8:10. The wait staff didn't show any urgency after we were seated despite us having a long wait. I almost took a star off for that. Things happen...but at least show a little urgency if you know someone has been waiting a while. The bar area is small and makes waiting for a table difficult. More...
