Yummy. Walked over on a whim to give a go. Customer service was on point. Very friendly and even offered a visual menu to accompany the large written one overhead. We had the classic yakinuki(?) don with steak and spare ribs. Both were very good. The soft poached egg was done perfectly! It was a little pricey but it's also downtown so it's understandable. I super enjoyed the self serve little miso bar. That was a nice twist. All in all food was good and I will wander back over :) More...

Wonderful small restaurant with lunch specials.  If you pick one of the featured entree selections, you get to draw a wrapped bit of paper from a jar containing varying discount percentages for your order.  It was a nice surprise.  As this was my first time here, I had no idea what to order.   I ended picking one on the lunch specials: the tofu and chicken bowl with an egg over a bed of rice. There's a small hot tea and miso bar behind a wall .  You serve yourself into these nice, soup and tea containers.   Seating was limited.  It's a smallish dining room area.   I spied a table with recently consumed bowls that was open, so I cleared an area for myself and sat down.  There was a small, elongated box with eating utensils inside.  I selected a pair of chopsticks (Nice chopsticks.  Not those cheap wood disposable one.)  There were also some small As I waited for my food, a group of three asked if they could sit with me, and I invited them to join me.   {This is something that is fairly common  when traveling to other places like Turkey, but not so common here.  I like it because it makes dining out social and more fun. They were good company and I enjoyed the conversations about food and travel...cool experience!}I learned from my dining friends that if you check-in here, you can get a free small dish of edamame beans.  When our food arrived, I was pleased to note that everyone's order looked beautifully presented.  My No. 7 tofu and chicken with egg looked so aesthetic that I was reluctant to dig in and mar it's beauty. But of course, I did.Delicious!   So -much- umami.Okay, this place is ridiculously ~good~. My taste buds were dancing around, happy for the wonderful flavors during this meal.  Every bit of every component of the bowl was good.If you don't normally frequent the downtown area for lunch locales, do put this one on your radar for a special trip.  This small restaurant is located just a block away from the county courthouse. Parking nearby, as you might expect, is difficult.  There s street parking downtown, but it's hard to find. More...

Three things I like about this place...the food is absolutely delicious, the family that own/run the place are first rate, and it's a block away from my work.  The location is great for the downtown worker business M-F.  The last two times I visited this place were on Saturdays.  Even on Saturdays,  every table was occupied and there was a line to order.  I wish the owners well.  Great family.  I recommend Masaya Yakiniku don to anybody that likes Japanese food! Masaya Yakiniku Don is a fairly new Japanese restaurant located on 7th and H St., a little further away from most downtown restaurants and venues, but still walk-able on a nice day. I came here for lunch on a weekday and had a great experience! I ordered the Sunrise Don ($9.75) w/ poached egg and the Salted Green Onion Oyakodon with Tofu ($7.50) and both dishes were really good! The #4 Sunrise Don comes with steamed rice, topped with thinly sliced beef, mushrooms, green onions, and an egg. I asked to substitute poached egg and there was no problem. The #6 Vegetarian Yakinikiu comes with rice, a good amount of grilled tofu, green onions, and soft boiled egg. The flavors for both bowl were delicious and satisfying! What is really cool about this restaurant is that they have a self serve tea and miso soup station! The miso soup was not extremely flavorful, but it was nice that it was complimentary. Also, check-in on Yelp for a free side order of garlic edamame. We ate in and the store was clean and not crowded. Customer service was excellent as the lady taking orders was really nice and even came around and asked if we needed anything and if we enjoyed our food. She even filled everyone in the restaurant's water even though there is a self-serve station. I was not informed about the opportunity to pick a discount for the day's special, but I did hear the cashier telling customers that ordered after me. Not a big deal since the food I ordered, although not the day's special, was really good. I would definitely recommend this place for lunch if you are downtown, but it is a little bit further away if you are walking. If you are driving, there are only metered spots nearby. Overall, Masaya Yakinikiu Don serves great Japanese food with great customer service! More...

I've been wanting to check this place out for some time and after I managed to gather a group of friends, we hit this place up on Saturday for lunch. It was a bit of a bummer to learn they are no longer open during dinner hours due to lack of business, which is understandable. The biggest issue is the parking. Expect to pay at metered parking nearby as the parking is very limited, so you'll likely have to walk a few blocks. It wasn't too crowded and our cashier very thoroughly explained the menu to us. They have lunch specials of the day where if you order one of them, you get to draw from a container for a 5-50% off coupon at random, which is kinda cool. At first I wondered why I only got the one discount when I ordered two bowls, but you have to order the exact meat choice listed for the discount. They have complimentary miso and hot tea to go along with everything that is also self serve. The rib meat bowls were almost double the price as the pork yakiniku don bowls. About $16, but if you order the lunch specials, they're around $9-10 with an additional discount that you draw.My pork bowl seemed a tad on the saltier side and was missing the fish roe as presented in the photo, but not a big deal. The service was pretty good for a fast dining place, as our places were picked up and water always filled. They brought out our Yelp check in edamame beans on our friends' plate, so he thought they came with his order, but they were nice enough to bring out another one.Overall, pretty good. I wouldn't say it's the best don I've had, but they have some pretty good stuff here. More...

I've been here about 6 times for lunch and I've loved it every time.  It's a very quirky place that lends to its charm.   It is an order at the counter establishment and they bring you your food.  Staff has always been pleasant.   One of their quirks is that, for lunch, they have you reach into a container of folded paper and each piece has a specific % off your meal. The thing that strikes me here is the quality of ingredients.   Always prepared very well.  Meats have been grilled properly, eggs are the perfect amount of runny, and the rice is creamy.   I particularly like the Classic Yanikuni Don, the Salted Green Onion Yanikuni Don, and the Sunrise Don.  They also have serve yourself miso soup that's included in your meal.Parking can be rough here if you don't work in the area, but the trek is worth it.   I'll definitely keep coming back. Masaya is a meal that always hits the spot and the employee that has been there that past 3 times I went remembers me, which is a great filling. This time was a bit different. I stopped by with a few friends around 12:30pm and it was pretty busy! We barely we able to get a table for 4. Even the complimentary miso soup pots were empty for a while. We had to ask for them to be refilled. I also saw many unfamiliar faces (new hires) that hadn't been there during my last 3 visits.I ordered the Classic Yakiniku Don with Kalbi (~$10). I also ordered extra Kalbi (~$2). I usually substitute the kimchi for seaweed salad. However, this time, the worker told me I would have to pay extra. I never had to do that before. Additionally, what I ordered was part of the lunch special yet I wasn't able to pick a coupon to receive some percentage off, but the rest of my friends were. Luckily, both those issues were resolved. She asked someone in the kitchen about the substitution and got the okay to do it, and ended up refunding and recharging me the correct amount. So it all worked out!The flavor of the food was delicious, as expected! That extra order of Kalbi really makes a difference. This is how much meat should come in the bowl, in my opinion. It is full of flavor and complimented the rice and seaweed salad well. The egg is honestly delicious. I love mixing it with everything - the rice, the meat, or even just by itself. It adds a whole other level of flavor to the dish.Since we sat there for a while just hanging out, we decided to order some dessert when the crowd died down. We ordered Mochi Ice Cream (2 for $2). We are able to mix and match, so we tried a total of 4 flavors for ~$4. We got the Green Tea, Red Bean, Black Sesame, and Mango. All of them were pretty good and easily shareable. My favorites were surprisingly the Mango and Red Bean. All in all, it is evident that Masaya is gaining popularity and making a lot of changes, I just hope that doesn't jeopardize the quality and customer services of the dishes. Masaya Yakiniku Don. I have a special place in my heart for this absolutely lovely and delectable Japanese bowl establishment. I've been traveling to Sacramento for the past six months and my Sacramento journey comes to a close this week as I move on to another chapter of my life.I now document the past few months of Sacramento and how it's quaint charm has won me over through the little places that have made me feel at home. The first one is Masaya Yakiniku Don. I first walked into this shop when looking for a quick lunch before a meeting. It was in close proximity to my hotel and I'm a sucker for a good Japanese bowl (which isn't always the easiest thing to find!). Upon walking in, little did I know how magical this place would be. The cashier, Ben, is a singular individual who has a palpable enthusiasm for his customers and an intense appreciation for the food they serve. Ben has always patiently and kindly explained to myself, and my coworkers, any questions we've had about the menu - no matter how obscure they may have been. Ben has become an icon amongst my colleagues, as we all recognize how exceptional and unique he is amongst a sea of sameness. The food, feels as if every grain of rice has been attended to with care. The salted green onion bowl has perfectly grilled pork that cradles an umami green onion mixture on top of soft fluffy rice. The rice complements the savory pork in the must fulfilling way possible, and is sauced to perfection. I dreamt about this bowl after my first visit, and have dragged colleagues here ever since. The endless miso soup and green tea is a lovely touch that many shops don't have anymore. During lunch hours, Masaya Yakiniku Don offers a coupon for any lunch specials that can range from 5% to 50% off. These moments of delight are what have secured Masaya in my heart. As I leave Sacramento for the last time, I know that I will return to Masaya Yakiniku Don one day. A Japanese bowl here immediately recalls memories of riding the Amtrak along the California coastline, warm Sacramento falls, and the stunning leafy foliage. Ben and the salted green onion bowl with pork will never be forgotten. More...

I am guilty of smothering my rice in soy sauce and condiments, which I heard is rude in Japanese restaurants, so it was nice to get enough sauce over my rice as it was served that way.  I liked that in a Japanese way everything was tidy, orderly and neat. But simple. After visiting Japan I learned how to make soft boiled marinated eggs, and it was wondeful to finally have some at this place because to me these eggs are addicting. Right on the corner of 7th and H Street is the Japanese restaurant called Masaya Yakiniku Don. It is one block away from the county superior court. Aw huh, that same building we (Sacto residents) go to serve jury duty, among other things. Anyway the restaurant serves up Yakiniku (Japanese style grilled meats) in donburi (rice bowl). Ya! The meats are marinated and thin cut. Most of the bowls come with a soft centered egg, if it doesn't you can pay extra to add one. The egg is perfectly each time in my donburi, soft cooked yolk that lushly oozes when it's pierced. Also, I like that the meats are not overly sauced. No HFCS nonsense are used. The marinated meats are flavored right ... tasty. They provide chili flakes, soy sauce, and sirachi sauce. So you can jazz it up the flavors yourself.  I don't find a need to though. The bowl prices average $10 and up. My go to favorite dish is the Sunrise Don bowl. It comes with your choice of angus beef or pork.  Enokitake mushrooms are in the Sunrise Don, they have a sweet taste with a crisp texture. Yum. They have complimentary miso soup and hot tea. It is self serve and unlimited. So go to town. The miso soup is ok, not bad at all. Another thing to note is the place is not that large, so plan ahead if your party consist of six or more. Plus this is a order and pay at the counter type of place. They rotate the daily lunch specials; the specials are regular menu items that are marked down in price. Also since this place is located downtown, parking is mainly metered street parking. More...
