Good French bistro cuisine. Service was good

We had an excellent dinner somewhat early Sunday evening. The service was excellent, bistro style (not the extreme fine dining of Baltimore's Charleston), attentive - not intrusive. The food was superb - on par with the quality we enjoyed when living in Paris. The value was also superb - helped by the wonderful restaurant week menu. More...

One of our favorite restaurants. The food is consistently very good to excellent, and the prices are reasonable. We sat outdoors due to the beautiful weather (and we had our dog), but the two-top was pretty small to the point that you had to be careful about knocking dishes/glasses/etc. off the table. The waitperson was very nice - friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The only minor demerit I give the restaurant is there are a limited number of entrees that are truly excellent, and once you know what they are (which of course takes a few visits), you're good to go. Not that there's anything bad on the menu, but some entrees are a notch below the top standard of our "go to" entrees. My better half had the Artichoke chicken (one of our top favorites), and I had the Hangar Steak (flavorful, cooked perfectly) with a side of the excellent Pommes Frites. And the deserts (and French Coffee) are to die for. More...

Went for Mother’s Day brunch, so keep that in mind. With that being said, it was very busy and there appeared to be only 1 waiter for all of the downstairs. He took forever to get to us. When we went to order we asked for coffee and tea and we were told they didn’t have because they were out of mugs. (Eventually they got clean mugs and gave us our coffee). I ordered an omelette and requested a small substitute to which I was told “No”. The food was very good and the atmosphere was very nice. I’m going to chalk all of this up to a busy and understaffed day. The only other time I went, the food was good and the atmosphere was nice. More...

What a wonderful Easter Sunday we had with the help of Marie Louise Bistro and the magnificent ambiance of the neighborhood.Went for Easter brunch with my husband, son, daughter-in-law, and daughter.  All of us were immediately transported back to the quaint bistros in France by the architecture and decor.  Not the fancy French restaurants, but the out-of-the-way cafes in the hamlets outside Paris. There were sidewalk tables and flowers hanging from the front awning.  The ceiling was elegant with the entire surface covered in sculpted metal tiles.  Large, heavy farm-style wooden tables and chairs provided comfortable seating and plenty of room on the table--not crowded like so many places today.  Couldn't find a cozier place to enjoy a meal. The service was friendly, accurate, and efficient. Our server didn't hesitate for respond to our request for recommendations.  The cappuccino was perfect in a wide, heavy stoneware mug. The wines by the glass plentiful and diverse. The Easter brunch menu was smaller than the full menu on line, but had something for everyone.  Surprisingly, there was not a croissant on the menu anywhere, but no one missed it.The desserts were amazing.  Four different desserts, four different rave reviews. And YES!  I tasted all four!By the time we left the downstairs was full (never went upstairs to see about that space) and the patrons seemed like locals, which is always a good sign.We will be going back, and I am looking forward to it. Quiet and cozy. Dinner with my wife before a show at the Hippodrome. We were seated quickly and water brought to the table. Waitress and waiter that were serving us were great. Very friendly and knowledgeable about the offerings. Food was good not great. My wife had the filet that was a special for the night with potato au gratin and the French onion soup. Cooked well a bit overly salty. I had the roasted chicken with asparagus and frites. Chicken was cooked well and tender. Served in a mild but tasty broth. Overall good and I would probably come back if I was in the neighborhood. More...

Marie Louise Bistro used to be a wonderful, moderately priced little gem, on N Charles St. Recently though (over the last year) the quality has plummeted. Medium-rare lamb burger was so overcooked that it was hard to slice. The drink I orderedwas supposed to have lavander bitters in it, but didn't. I rarely come here anymore, & won't likely be back. Lovely atmosphere, attentive but not hovering staff, good service pace, and nice, bistro quality food. Had an appetizer special - plump oysters with delicate breading and tangy sauce - large portion, enough for sharing. Dug into friends' plates as well: beef tartare was fresh and well seasoned but meat was a bit tough; escargot was presented in an unusual way - small size snails were sautéed with mushrooms in brown butter sauce and presented on toasts - very tasty; pate de Champagne was well seasoned, generously portioned, and had good texture but, alas, there were no cornichons and we were given olives... still good. Had a lamb two-way appetizer and house salad as an entrée - small but succulent lamb chop was expertly prepared medium rare and accompanied by lamb merguez (tender and just spicy enough sausage), grilled cherry tomatoes, and light sauce - good and filling. Tried friend's magret de canard - tender duck breast with cherry glaze, potato gratin, and zucchini - also a success. Finished with a large and delectable pear frangipane tart - melting in your mouth crust and wonderful filling (almond paste and caramelized pears) and roibois tea. My mouth waters as I write this review! Drinks - had a French 75 - gin, champagne, and elderflower liquor - good pour, good proportions. I like atmosphere of the place - reminiscent of the French bistros but not too cliché and art on the walls is for sale... Will definitely be back! More...

Came here for dinner last night with friends, before going to see a show at the Hippodrome. I was in love with the decor, the moment we walked in; they did a great job making it look very European. The woman who seated us was great, she was all over the restaurant all evening (we were there from 4:45-6:45) helping out, and jumped in to help us a few times when our waiter was busy. The kitchen was very prompt also; our appetizers and bread arrived before our wine did! The waiter was nice, but overwhelmed, as I saw him running all over also, including the upstairs area. My only complaint was that my food wasn't exactly hot, slightly hotter than warm though. Maybe that's their style? By the time I was halfway through, the lamb was a bit cool, which was disappointing. But the calamari was really good (and hot) and the 2 desserts we ordered we're both delicious. I'd return, maybe earlier in the day though, for a future visit. More...

My wife and I went to Marie Louise Bistro on the last day of Restaurant Week. Since it's one of our favorite restaurants we had high expectations, but unfortunately this visit fell short. The service and ambience was excellent, as usual. The food was not up to par. Our first course was great (Caesar salad for her, Pear and Blue Cheese salad for me). The Caesar is a staple, and always good. My Pear and Bleu cheese salad with pears, bleu cheese, spinach/romaine/ and arugula lettuce, and walnuts was outstanding. The second course fell flat. My wife's Spinach Lasagna was basically inedible, way over salted and for some strange reason made with layers of green pepper. Terrible. My ribeye with crab topping and béarnaise sauce was over cooked, had no béarnaise sauce (they brought it later when I pointed out it was missing - it was also terrible), and the few pieces of crab added nothing. Had the chocolate eclair for dessert and the chocolate topping was essentially so cold It it was like breaking through concrete. We'll be back. One bad meal does not make a trend More...

I came here for a weekday dinner date and realized they had happy hour. My dinner plans turned into drinking and eating bar style food from their happy menu. All of the dishes were pretty good and priced at $7. At other restaurants, I have received more food for the price , but the portions here were still respectable. Our server was really good, working the bar and our table and never missing a beat. They lost a star because we found a piece of (fried) hair in our calamari. It was handled well after the fact-taking the item off the bill, so I regarded it as "Things happen," but I just hope this is not an every day occurrence. The dessert was a good selection. I thought the flavor was kind of overwhelming in the cheesecake and kind of expensive at $9 a pop. Bottomline- I would come back again to try dinner as I had originally intended. Hold the hair! I love this little place. My sister and I came across it last year and sat outside for a lovely sister brunch. The Mimosas and other drinks were awesome. We sat outside and enjoyed the breeze. We've passed this place thousands of times and for some reason that day it just caught our eye. The shrimp and grits were so darn good. The andouille sausage added in sets the flavor off just right. It was our first time do we split different plates. The lamb chop lollipops though small were packed with flavor. I returned with my family for dinner one night and my son enjoyed his lamb burger, the Mr enjoyed his seafood dish and whatever i had i demolished. Can't remember....sorry. I returned again for a celebratory ladies day brunch and all of the ladies enjoyed their selections. The dessert options are vast and perfect in size. They offer the cutest little tarts and other French pastries. It's very inviting and a lot of art to see as you look around. Delicious food, homey setting, excellent service - what more can you ask for! We come here often just to grab desserts and drinks which they have a couple of seatings in the front for.The food here is usually almost always right on the money!  This week we checked out their restaurant week specials.  Mouthwatering menu!  I had the sea bass with a spinach risotto which was amazing!  The cream of crab soup was nicely paired with some on the house bread, actually lumps of crabs in it, not much but good enough!  As for the desserts, we've probably had well over half of the selections here from cakes to tarts to napoleons!  NEVER once was it a bad choice so I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the sweets menu.  I enjoyed the fruit tarts, chocolate and carrot cakes, and eclairs!  The old recipe for he Napoleon was beyond words! I'm in love with this little cafe! I'm actually shocked I haven't written a review for it already. I've been a few times for dinner and happy hour, and more recently I've been stopping by for pastries and coffee, and I've always been so pleased. To start, it's so much bigger than it looks! There's a cafe-style area in the front and outside. Upstairs is more of a bar area, and in the back there's more of a restaurant vibe - this will fit any mood or event you're in, which I think is impressive on its own. I love the art on the walls and in the pastry case (the desserts are beyond stunning), and the waitstaff are so friendly. Sometimes service takes a bit longer than other places - but I feel like this is such a relaxed restaurant that it's almost by design. Taking a bit longer to enjoy your food and talk to who you're with is definitely in line with the French way.As far as the food goes, YUM. The duck dishes are phenomenal and the bread is out of this world (and they keep bringing it out if you ask). My dad, who's spent a good chunk of time living/working in Europe, came here and got the boef bourginon and said it was the best he's ever had. He's super picky, so this was incredibly high praise. As far as the cafe side, the pumpkin spice chai with homemade caramel sauce is amazing, but the real standout this morning was the Cafe Miel - a latte with honey and cinnamon. It's on the sweet side, and the perfect fall drink. It's super rich, and a small was more than enough to get my daily caffeine fix (naturally, it was also combined with a fresh-baked croissant for breakfast).Overall, this is definitely a place to visit when in Baltimore - I'm thrilled that it's only a few blocks away from me. The French onion soup was bomb. For our mains we shared a burger and the steak frites - both cooked to perfection, seasoned well and overall delicious. This place is simple, refined, and absolutely lovely. A French/Mediterranean nook in the Mount Vernon neighborhood, with an almost-impossible-to-resist bakery counter at the front. The service was charismatic and wonderful. We came here for weekend lunch, so I can't speak for the fuller menu, but what I saw offered a lot to choose from and was not overly expensive. From many soup, salad, and sandwich choices, I opted classic French and did the niçoise salad. The dressing was gorgeous, and I wanted to steal the recipe: neither runny nor thick, with a sweet tang. Topped with buttery saffron potato bites and perfectly medium-rare tuna. Left me feeling invigorated and not stuffed. (I was dying to try the pecan-crusted chicken sandwich, but they were out of it that morning.) Beautiful drinks: I had a cocktail with pear-flavored Grey Goose, elderberry liqueur, and champagne. It was just the right side-note to the food, and not at all cloyingly sweet. Pear is a fantastic alcohol flavoring, and I'm surprised I don't encounter it more often. I would have loved to have tried dessert here, but I did go for a cappuccino. It was not particularly strong espresso, but it was also served in a large mug, so it was sufficient! This will be a new go-to spot, for sure. Highly recommended. More...

Definitely a favourite place in Mount Vernon! I came here for a late lunch and will be back again. Upon arrival I was greeted promptly by the hostess. The weather was beautiful that day, but since the breeze was a little too strong for the napkins and menus to stay on the table I decided to dine indoors. The menu is very extensive for brunch, with many French classics, so I would be comfortable bringing people with me next time as I'm sure there would be something for everyone. I asked the waiter what the quiche selection was for the day, and between the quiche lorraine and veggie quiche I chose the veggie quiche. The server then told me that instead of the $10 marked on the menu for the quiche and salad, it was actually $13. This bothered me a little bit, but I went ahead with my order anyway. This quiche better be good, I thought. When the quiche arrived at my table, I was pleasantly surprised. It was deep-dish, beautifully golden brown on top, and a generous portion. It was not the veggie quiche I ordered, but the quiche lorraine. I'm not a vegetarian, so I didn't mind the bacon. In fact it was a happy mistake as it turned out to be one of the best quiches I've ever had. Besides the fact that there was bacon in every single bite, what impressed me the most was how silky the custard was. Just imagine the most supple silken tofu, except with the sweetness of cream and flavour of eggs. The crust was perfectly brown, on the thin side, and not soggy at all. The salad that went with it was a mixture of arugula and spring greens. Simple, but nicely done. After the quiche, I was actually quite full already, but I couldn't resist dessert after seeing the display case on my way in. I ended up ordering a coffee and the frangipane pear tart. The coffee was huge - I actually couldn't finish all of it, and the tart was a generous size as well, at $6.95. I ended up bringing the unfinished 2/3 of the tart home, which I had for breakfast the following day (still delicious, possibly even better). One note on the coffee though, it's on the acidic side so I actually prefer the coffee from Cafe Poupon.Summary? You'll find a much better quiche here than at Cafe Poupon, though Cafe Poupon has better coffee. More...

Came in for Saturday brunch. Very cute place, well-lit, beautiful selection of baked goods. Friendly, quick service. I had the crab egg benedict, which was very, very good! So nice I had to go twice.Came back a second time, just for the Strawberry Shortcake and needless to say....it was worth every bite.  Light & spongy cake, chunks of strawberry and delicious whip cream. While the slice is  $8ish....to me it's worth it. It's the only dessert I've had here, but with the large variety of cakes, cookies and other french patisseries I'd definitely return. There's also several special coffees (you know your fru-fru types). I had the latte which was good. Oddly though, if I got it to go, then size small would have been available. However, when dining in and using a coffee mug only size large (for $5.95) is available. Not realizing this till after the receipt was presented...the waiter without hesitation adjusted it. Anyway, this is a cute little place and while I can't vouch for the food, I'd definitely recommend it for a nice option to get some dessert (you know beyond cupcakes and ice cream, which they have neither of). Marie and her team delivers true hospitality to customers.  This charming business offers delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner options that will surely satisfy your appetite! Ate here early last Saturday night with a group. Had the mac and cheese as an appetizer, which was superb...maybe the best I ever had. Beef bourguignon was pretty good, too. Our server was Brendan, who was fantastic. My only quibbles were that the bread is not served warm, nor was my apple strudel, even when I specifically asked whether it was served warm and was told it was. Both were tasty, though. My fav thing @ Marie Louise is the cheese plate! Grab a chair on the second floor and enjoy the more casual vibe. The plate showcases 3 amazing cheeses, including a soft cheese, a hard cheese and a delicious blue that pairs really well with the accompaniments. I'm not even a fan of blue cheese but this plate knocks it outta the park! The cheese plate usually comes w/ sliced French bread, homemade pickles, nuts and preserved fruit. Marie Louise is a great reprieve from he heat on a Sunday afternoon.  I went her with my partner for a caffeine pick me up and dessert.Food - he had a cafe mocha and we split a caramel Napoleon.  I've never had a caramel Napoleon before, mostly chocolate, so I thought it would be worth a try.  The flavor was great and the caramel topping was delish as well.  Only warning is that it is homemade caramel, so very hard, like a toffee.  If you have sense it teeth this is not the desert for you.Ambience - quiet with an old world feel.Service - the barista/bar tender was very helpful.  Helped us pick a dessert and made an off menu coffee drink for him.Price - $14 for one coffee and dessertVerdict - definitely worth a visit! Being quite an aficionado of almond croissants, and having previously been quite certain that I had already had the best, Marie Louise delivered one that changed everything I thought I knew.  I am still picking up the pieces of my shattered pomposity and acknowledging that there is still much that I don't know, and much that I have not experienced; however, I don't think a better almond croissant is one of them. The coffee was delicious, the staff kind and attentive, and the environment cozy and conducive to taking a brief time out.I also ordered a gluten-free chocolate peanut butter granola bar to bring home to my boyfriend, and this was quite special as well. Thanks for a great experience.  I will definitely go out of my way to visit if I find myself in Baltimore again. had a really lovely sunday brunch here with friends. they were able to accommodate my request for gluten free and the crab omelette was so so good. i'm pretty picky about crab dishes and am almost never super impressed but this time the lumps of crab were plump, moist, and so delicious and the boursin brought it to decadent level. YUM! because the pastries here get so many rave reviews we felt we needed to give a few of those a try as well. there are several gluten free options so of course i had to try the flourless chocolate cake. it wasn't amazing to me but very good. the fourless chocolate cake recipes i'm in love with are the ones that have a texture more like pudding and this one was more "regular" cake texture. very rich and chocolate-y so i'm sure many people will love it.the serving was so rich and large i took 2/3s of it home. my friends said their tart (peach?) was delish as well.. service was great and as others have said the decor is charming. will try to go back before i head home next month! My partner and I decided when walking around Baltimore on a Sunday to stop in this absolutely quaint hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We were starting to get hungry and wanted something cute and new instead of Subway or a cliche quick lunch. We walked by the bistro and look at each other to see each others approval. Of course we agreed. We walked in the front door and were greeted by at least three employees with giant smiles. They welcomed us and asked us to choose a seat that we would like. We chose the one closest to the door for two. When we seated ourselves, one server came over and brought menus. Of course we went straight for the brunch drinks. He ordered a mimosa for himself and a Red Sangria for me. Wow! What a great decision! Both drinks were absolutely perfect. The menu was full of amazing options to choose from. I chose the Caesar Salad while my partner chose the French Onion Soup. The only complaint I have about my meal was that it didn't have enough dressing on it. I understand that for salads you really should be about the phenomenal crunch and texture, but for me I truly love having a perfect blend of just enough dressing and fresh crunch. That would be the ONLY complaint from my side. My partner told me he has never had a more perfect French Onion Soup than Marie Louise's. Bravo! Everything was priced just fine. Not too low nor too high. Thank you for the perfect brunch experience. =) More...

Lovely, delicious, friendly, warm, impressive. Those are some of the key words I would use to describe my new favorite place. I came here on a sunny Sunday morning before I went to the museum; I heard they had a great brunch! As you've probably seen in my previous reviews I LOVE smoked salmon eggs benedict and I was so happy to see this on the menu (among a HUGE brunch/breakfast/lunch menu full of various and unique dishes). The presentation of the plate was picturesque. Each and every ingredient was fresh and perfectly cooked. The smoked salmon was perfectly moist, the poached eggs were cooked exactly how they should be, and the amount of hollandaise sauce was just right. I love how they topped the muffin halves with chopped red onion and capers! The side hash was divine mixed with colorful peppers and another side of juicy slices of cantaloupe made this brunch entrée perfectly filling and satisfying all across the flavor palate. I ordered a glass of white sangria and it was difficult not to order another, and another, and another! The service was extremely friendly, prompt and caring. I was sat by one person, served by another, and tended to by a third. Each server was just as friendly and sweet as the last. I felt well taken care of.Lastly, the décor had 3 distinct sections which cater to the type of ambiance you want to create for yourself. I love that they have outdoor seating so you can people watch along Charles St. or view the newly remodeled monument. The front section of the restaurant (where I sat) is more "bistro style" with some smaller tables surrounding the dessert case. The back (largest) portion is blocked off by curtains and has gorgeous exposed bricked and has a much more private and romantic atmosphere.I would recommend this place--hands down--for brunch! I can't wait to go back for dinner and to try some of their fresh homemade desserts. More...

WOW. That sums up how I feel about the dessert selection at Marie Louise Bistro. I have pretty high standards for desserts because I bake pretty frequently but I was extremely impressed with the desserts at MLB. When you enter the bakery, you see a beautiful display of desserts in the front complete with cheesecake, profiteroles, etc. Whenever I walk by, I can't help but stare at the tantalizing sweets behind the glass display. I went here for restaurant week with some friends - the first two dishes were fine but nothing that really wowed me. I was wondering what the dessert was going to be because on the menu, it had just said "assorted desserts." When it was time for dessert, our waiter brought out a huge silver platter filled with all sorts of desserts. All of them looked so cute and delicious it was hard for me to pick just one. I ended up opting for the lemon meringue pie because I love lemon-flavored anything (except for limoncello) and it tasted as delicious as it looked! I also tried some of my friend's chocolate pistachio creme brulee, which blew my mind. I never knew you could have different kinds of creme brulee beyond the standard one, and when I tasted this one I fell in love. I vowed to return home and learn how to make my own chocolate pistachio creme brulee. I have yet to do this, but the next time I return to MLB I will definitely get it again! One last thing - if you come to MLB for drinks, they have a bar area and some semi-private rooms on the second floor. My friends and I thought both the drinks and the atmosphere were very classy and refreshing! More...

I cannot properly express my obsession with the dessert at Marie Louise. It's a go-to for high quality sweets after a nice lunch, dinner, or a stressful exam. $6-7 for dessert may seem expensive, but Marie Louise is worth the price.FOOD:   *CREME BRULEE-Just get this. They change flavors sometimes, and my favorite is pistacchio. The only reason why I didn't get it this time is because of my friend's nut allergy, and I didn't want to risk his life for my craving.   *NAPOLEON- The creme and the pastry are great, and the caramelized sugar layer on top adds just the right amount of sweetness to balance the heavy taste of the creme.   *TART- We got strawberry, but honestly they're all great. The pear and the berry tart are also moist and perfect with a cup of coffee.AMBIENCE- very clean and classy interior, with more cozier seats in the back.ADVICE- Go here for dessert. I went all the way for 5 stars which is rather unusual... But the portions are large, the decor is sophisticated yet not pretentious, and the food is quite good. We had a charcuterie and cheese plate to start, and had we known, we probably would have ordered something lighter -- the portion was huge! I had the Croque-Madame and it was exactly what I had been craving since returning from France last summer. My wife had the Maniere Moules Frites and was very pleased with it, too. The dessert tray was somewhat overwhelming -- so many delicious looking choices! We tried the Pistachio Chocolate Creme Brûlée, and it was very rich. The boyfriend took me here for lunch on my birthday. I had been here once before several months ago and the food was nothing to write home about, but today, the food was amazing. We ordered the crab soup as an appetizer, and loved it. Their fresh bread was a delicious way to soak up the last few drops. For our entrées, I ordered the crab omelette and he ordered the spinach lasagna. The sauce in my omelette was delicious, and the crab meat was plentiful. The home fries were also delicious. But, my boyfriend's spinach lasagna was to die for. It was perfect, from the sauce to the cheese to the texture, I almost wished I ordered it myself. I was really surprised to see all the 2-3 star reviews for their brunch. Had the pleasure of brunching here this morning, and based on the two menu items I tried, MLB has quite a nice brunch. The eggs on the benedict were cooked perfectly, and the hollandaise was rich with just the right amount of tart. Also shared the veggie/portobello  sandwich, which was also very good - loads of grilled vegetables with feta cheese and pesto between cheesy delicious focaccia bread - with a side of lemony bulgar wheat. The food was a bit on the richer side (not necessarily a bad thing for brunch). My brunch-date and I were both pleased. Our only dislike was the coffee - my first cup tasted sour. But I asked for another and the next batch was decent. True story: the gentleman next to us was also complaining about the coffee, so his wife says "then why do you always order it?" He just shrugged. Bottom line maybe - come here for the food, not the coffee. There were lots of other tasty sounding brunch options, so I wouldn't mind coming back and trying more. The best crab cake I ever had was one they had as a special (full of crabmeat and not filler). And their dessert case keeps me coming back on the regular (I HAVE to try them all). Service is good too; I went on a surprisingly nice spring evening and wanted to sit outside so they put out a table. I'd highly recommend. More...

26 February 2014

Came here with the family for a late brunch (otherwise known as lunch for regular, non-asian people) and was seated rather quickly.  We had nice service, even though they did seem a little frazzled.  I will say however, that I ordered a non-fat latte, and tried to slip me a 2% latte.  I drank it guiltily.  Not the best coffee, but at least it wasn't over roasted.Onto the food.  Their croissants were a little on the tough side (albeit we tried to cut through it with a butter-knife....dumb, I know).  I really like their croque-madame.  It was drenched in mornay sauce (basically delicious liquid cheese), which we then used to dip our fries in.  Not the healthiest thing...but pretty good.  Their crabs benny was also really good.  Big chunks of crab and eggs poached respectably.   I have mixed feelings about their lamb burger.  While the flavor was there, it left a bitter aftertaste for me.  I couldn't tell if it was the feta cheese or the charred bun, but I the taste kinda stuck with me...luckily I washed it down with a fruit tart (good, but not the best). I was hesitant to eat here after reading some of the negative reviews, but friends we were meeting chose it.  Our experience was terrific.  In particular, my husband, who has eaten steak tartare in France, New York, and Chicago, said it was the best he ever had.  The salads, all our main courses, and deserts were excellent, and the service was friendly and efficient.  We don't live in Baltimore, but if we did, we would eat there regularly. I am new to the Mt. Vernon area and I have been scouping out surrounding restaurants in the area. I was pleased with Marie L Bistro. Our server name was Stephanie. She was accomdating. She provided me with substitutions because I am a vegeterian. We ordered jumpo shrimp appetizer. It had olives, pesto, & tomato sauce. Yummy! I had a portobello sandwich. The bread was totally tasty. Tomato/cheese. My friend had a chicken sandwich. We both enjoyed our food/weather/service. Stephanie also offered to wrap my food for me, which I accepted. I love when a server offers to do that. All and all, I will definitely return, perhaps during happy hour because for the type of food we ordered it did not equal to what we had to pay. Actually, it's probably the drinks to why our tab was a little steep. (We had two drinks each). Again, thank you Stephanie for your great service & positive attitude. However, the manager/owner walked around a few times, but never gave eye contact to us or customers. It would have been nice if she smiled a bit or approaced a table here and there. I'm glad the servers didn't take after her. Another server came and cleared out the table when Stephanie was working on something else. Thanks again for our wonderful experience Stephanie. More...

Bette and I have been going to Marie Louise Bistro for at least five years. It's just up from Read street on the west side of Charles street. That's in the second block north of Mount Vernon square. For old time Baltimoreans, it's where Gampy's (Great American Melting Pot) used to be. A french bistro. Yes, there are places to eat that are closer to Ruxton where we live, but not many that really know what to do with food. My wife even stops by on her way home from work after a long day to pick up an order rather than cook dinner. It's the combinations and the way they put things together. Nothing hugely obvious but the meal always lasts longer because you let the food linger in your mouth to taste all the different tastes. Last weekend I ordered two eggs fried up and a chunk of broiled salmon for brunch. The waiter not only asked how I wanted the eggs, but also how I wanted the salmon! I said sunny side up and he suggested medium rare for the salmon. Have you EVER had someone ask how rare you wanted fish? I said go for it and it was delicious. there were a few small potatoes that had been cooked in something yummy and a few slices of fresh fruit. All in all a nice portion. Not huge, but satisfying. They have as nice a touch with the vegetarian and vegan items on the menu as they do the chicken, meat and fish. Hans came out of the kitchen at one point and we introduced ourselves and he stopped and chatted for a few minutes.I asked for decaf iced tea. The waiter said they only had hot decaf. So he brought me a large hot cup of decaf mint tea and a glass of ice cubes. Presto Iced decaf mint tea. The service was good. The food came fairly quickly. The check came fairly quickly after we asked for it. Bette likes the HUGE chocolate croissants, but would like it even better with a bit more chocolate. I have a passion for dark chocolate gelato. Cafe Troia makes the best I've had. Marie Louise Bistro buys theirs and it's OK, but it's not as good as Cafe Troia's.We will continue to go back. Too bad the Owl Bar at the Belvedere lost their edge a few years ago. We used to have a hard time deciding where to go. Hope they get their mojo back some day.You might be lucky and get street parking, but there's a paid parking lot in the net space up. We usually drive around the block once or twice and if we can't find a spot, we head for the lot. More...

The menu is modeled after a traditional friend Bistro. And, it's awesome! Nothing's too expensive, they offer exotic dishes including escargo and an affordable charcuterie plate that usually includes foie gras torchon. The service is really good, and the bar upstairs is nothing short of beautiful. Mixed drinks are always spot on.My one criticism about Marie Louis is that the quality of their food has declined over the past year. I heard they got a new chef, which would account for said decline. Regardless, they have the best beef tar tar I've ever had, and they constantly have creative dishes worth trying. If you're in Mt Vernon, check it out. More...

Would recommend coming here for dessert or for coffee and pastries. The actual lunch and dinner menu is ok but not incredibly exciting. However, their desserts are delicious and when they walk out with a large tray of desserts to choose from, it's hard to resist.  Prices for dessert are a little on the high end, but there aren't that many other dessert places in mt Vernon. The atmosphere is warm and inviting but feels a little bit dated for my tastes. More...

Most of the bad reviews for Marie Louise are due to the fact that they have some American food (not purely french), and don't have more seating. Frankly I love the crowded (but not over-crowded) atmosphere. And being vegetarian I am grateful for a little more variety on the menu. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Baltimore, and I've been there about 5 times, and this cute little cafe never disappoints! I Whether there for lunch, afternoon, or dinner, I am always pleased by my food, the prompt service, and most of all, the DELICIOUS desserts.  For dinner, my favorite dishes are the Charcuterie Plate (appetizer), the Duck Confit, the Salad nicoise, Steamed mussels (appetizer), and the Seared Scallops. Other than one or two times I feel adventurous, i always get the Duck confit, and it's always cooked to perfection, with the meat literally falling off the bone.  So delicious! However, my favorite part of the meal is always when the server brings the dessert tray.  Instead of a menu, they literally bring out a tray of every dessert tart that is available for the night, and recites to you while pointing out each one.  My favorite dessert is the fruit tart.  It's an individual sized tart that has the perfect balance of fruits and sweetness to satisfy my dessert stomach at any time of the day :) Some of the others that I recommend are the cheesecake, the pistachio/ chocolate mousee, and the little pecan pie.  Also, they have a really fantastic happy hour upstairs!  If you haven't been there, be sure to check it out, especially on Martini Mondays! How surprising that MLB has such a low rating on Yelp!  Bizarre - I enjoyed a lovely meal with my mama at this sweet spot in front of the Monument.  Win #1: Outdoor seating.  LOVE the people watching!  There are surprisingly few outdoor seating options in Mount Vernon, and I really enjoyed the ambiance here.Win #2: Super nice service (and a bit flirty!).  Perfect balance of there/not there.Win #3: PUMPKIN RAVIOLI.  OH MY.  Win #4: Beet salad, although it had a bit more goat cheese than I normally enjoy, but that's fine.  The Clam Chowder was FABULOUS as well...All in all, a charming little place, especially great for bringing parental units. If the cute little bistro tables with yellow umbrellas don't catch your eye then the pastry case right inside the door should! Last time I checked, they had quiches, a salmon torte, some creme de la rem goodness (I'm making up names) , fruit tarts, and a rich looking chocolate mousse thingy. I tried not too much attention to them because it was breakfast time and I had to focus. Breakfast. Breakfast. Breakfast. The menu prices are affordable and it all sounded good. My plate was good but I remember the potatoes needing a little bit more salt and flavor. Maybe that's just the French way of cooking. Next time I'm going to ask for ketchup and hot sauce and hope not to offend anyone :-) I think the coffee could have been MUCH hotter and a little darker too. I still love the place though. More...

I came here last night for my birthday dinner with my family.  We're a fairly disorganized, discombobulated bunch and with 9 people and a baby, spanning 4 generations, we tend to take over any restaurants where we dine.I came to Marie Louise Bistro a few times for lunch when I lived in Baltimore a few years ago.  Since I now live in DC, I've been unable to get back there since but have always recommended it to people who are traveling to the area.So after I made my reservation at the bistro for all 10 of us, I started reading the yelp reviews and was nervous that I had made a poor choice.  I remember the food being reasonably priced (which is was!), fresh and flavorful (which is was!), their menu being creative and inspired (which it was!) and the decor being inviting and warm (which it was!).  But the reviews on this site are all over the place!  Most are negative- filled with people wanting to like this place but finding it disappointing.  Some point to an uninspired menu- and I have to wonder, were we looking at the same menu?  It had something for everyone- our table alone had avid meat-eaters, vegetarians and seafood lovers.  Then they said the service was stuffy and stand-offish.  This was not at all my experience!  I thought our server was professional and friendly.  We're a hard to handle bunch and I thought she was patient with us and answered questions about the menu with knowledge.   The rest of the staff was also extremely friendly and even helped comp half of our parking- even though we showed up in multiple cars.My food: We started with the cheese plate, which had an assortment of fruits and olives with three cheeses: a brie, a blue and some kind of mild cheddar.  Then we got the shrimp in garlic sauce, which was so good that I half filled up on bread, just trying to sop up the leftover sauce, long after the shrimp was gone.I got a French Onion Soup.  I thought it was pretty good.  Tasted homemade, like my Mother's.  Two pieces of bread and lots of cheese.  It was a great comfort food for a rainy day. Then I got the 'Blood' Orange Salad.  Blood oranges are out of season, so they were regular oranges.  But she warned me about that in advance and honestly, I'd rather not have an out-of-season blood orange when the regular variety was sweet and citrusy.Overall, if this place is inconsistent then we caught it on a really great night.  For being so worried about these reviews, I had a totally different experience and would definitely go back next time I'm in Baltimore. I think they shortened the menu since I ate there last, but everyone found something to enjoy. Scallops were delicious! Frisee salad was wonderful. Our server was the best server I have had in a long time. The appetizer of mussels in herb and garlic butter sauce was delectable. The Beef de Marie Louise was cooked perfectly with creamy risotto. The only dish that marred the whole experience is the Cassoulet. This was poorly executed and lacked seasoning. The manager apologized and took the cost of the item off the bill. There is a large selection of wines. The cocktail I had was well prepared. Although the meals can be pricy, it is worth the trip to taste the delicious flavors of the sauces. Just stay away from the Cassoulet. More...

This restaurant came highly recommended but had mixed reviews so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, at least on the night that we went, everything was great. The service was wonderful, the food was very good and the restaurant was so pretty with all the Christmas decorations up. Since the bar is upstairs, eating downstairs was nice and quiet. Also, the menu is much larger than it appeared online. I was very impressed. More...

Good restaurant. I got the Zucchini Louise, which is a fettucine style dish with "noodles" made from strips of zucchini. It was very good, but wayyyy too fatty. There must have been a whole stick of butter melted over it. My partner had the grilled portobello which was also great, but overly vinegary. The service was very nice, but I felt there were not enough waiters on staff. Not a place to go in a rush.Altogether, I would definitely recommend it with these caveats. More...

A long overdue review I have wanted to post...Marie Louise Bistro is great!! Our group of 8 family members dined here the weekend after Thanksgiving. We were seated at a large table upstairs, which suited our party perfectly.(There was a bit of privacy for conversation and such with out feeling isolated.) The hostess and server were gracious and attentive. The most important part: The food! Venison loin was my main course, served with Brussels sprouts, parsnip puree, and spaghetti squash. Yum!! I had to keep shooing my husband's fork away from my plate. He had the calves' liver, which I would probably never order in any restaurant because i am very picky; it was prepared perfectly. So tender and delicious. Chocolate hazelnut dome for desser More...

Sad to see a lot of low grades (stars) here. Makes me wonder if it's who is working or managing,  but I had a great experience...So, I starting to get familiar with the Mt. Vernon area since my former roommate, friend and fellow food snob moved to Baltimore. Her hubby works in Mt Vernon. So last weekend I popped up to her hood for a wine tasting at the Engineers Club and then a little dinner at Marie Louise Bistro. A little place she thought I might like. She was right as usual as we clearly have similar tastes! To get the full feel without stuffing ourselves we split a salad, entrée, and dessert, not an issue at all for our waitress, who was just fast enough and kept up with a busy restaurant. Oh, we did not split our glass of wineSo up first was the Salad Nicoise. I have actually been to Nice and gorged myself on variations of this salad about 7 years ago. Had not had a good one since, even with many attempts, but this one rocked. Nice chunk of perfectly seared Ahi, very green green beans, adorable and perfectly cooked potatoes, a little egg, red pepper,,, well and olives, but I let my friend eat those. All just right, but what brought it all together was a fabulous dressing. I am surprised they don't sell it if they make it on site because it was yummy. We then split the Grilled French Toulouse Sausage. It was mild but had great flavors of pork, smoked bacon, wine, and garlic served over lentils with a parsley puree. The menu says grilled Baguette but I don't remember the baguette. The lentils were perfectly cooked, tasted like they used some red wine in that process and the parsley pesto made a flavor combo that would excite any taste bud. They added a few of these tiny potatoes in with the lentils as well. A perfect bite was the piece of sausage, potato, and lentil smushed in the vibrant green pesto.Really delicious all around! My friend Is a huge Pots De Crème fan...ok so am I and MLB had a seasonal caramel one. It was just enough sweet to finish off the evening. They served it with what I can only describe as crunchy chocolate covered rice crisps. My preference would have been a little layer of chocolate ganache, but that's just me, a fan of caramel and chocolate combined. It was delicious as is.They keep it delicious and affordable at MLB. It even feels a bit like you are in Europe and not just off Charles St. I will be back many times me thinks, unless I have the experience of one of these other Yelpers (Yikes) More...

I've been frustrated lately with restaurants listed as participating in Restaurant Week but once you arrive there's some catch. Such was the case with Marie Louise. After confirming via their website that lunch, not just brunch, was served on Sundays I made reservations. Upon arrival at 11:30 the waiter informed us that the kitchen wasn't ready for lunch and that only brunch would be served until 3:00 or so--ergo, no Restaurant Week menu. While voicing frustration and deciding with my group whether or not to leave, one of the best servers I've ever met saved the day for us. Bulat apologized and placed Restaurant Week and lunch menus on the table while explaining all of our options in succinct, mouth-watering details. Exceptional service. More...

Took two kids there for a special occasion, and wanted some place where people weren't looking at your noisy kids. A lot of chatter which was good, clean place and well air conditioned with plenty of space for walking around or kids who need some space.Mac & Cheese was really good, if you're deciding on a dish, get the duck. Seafood was good too (i.e. salmon). Desserts look good, but they weren't as tasty as you'd expect (we probably got the wrong ones-- they really looked amazing). Gelato is a must. Espresso was fresh.Highly recommend, especially if you want to bring a group of people, or have kids and need to get out. I'm wrapping up a weekend visit to Baltimore (I went to college here) and ate at Marie Louise for the first time on Friday afternoon. It was close to my hotel and we arrived during that restaurant Dead Zone between lunch and dinner and my boyfriend and I were hungry. We both really enjoyed our meal there. No, it's not innovative cuisine with items containing "foam" as an ingredient (this is directed at the reviewer who sniffed this place must have been hot in the early 80's) What it is, though, is mostly a menu of traditional French dishes you'd find in just about any neighborhood French bistro. I've spent a fair amount of time in France, and this place really made the effort.I started with a Maryland crab soup (not French, yes I know...) and thought it was excellent. Spicy, flavorful, good veggies and lots of crab meat for about $6. My boyfriend had a Caprese salad. We shared the Bison burger (I asked for medium, and it was cooked just right) topped with an excellent black truffle aoili and tangy red onion marmalade. The fries were very good and crispy. I drank a generous portion of very good red Sangria prepared in-house. White is also available, and they apparently do have happy hour drink prices. We ended our meal with very good espresso and lattes and the dessert tray...is EPIC. I think there must have been 14+ desserts on there. We shared a passion fruit mousse cake and coconut cake. Both very good.We went there again for coffee and dessert last night, joined by a friend who really liked her duck confit salad.Service was friendly and very good.So yeah, if you want to go to the "hot" place where you can pose and fawn over the latest food trend this isn't it. But for simple but good classic French, great burgers, awesome desserts, good drinks and coffee at a reasonable price, this place would've been a welcome addition when I lived in Baltimore. More...

I think the best way to describe Marie Louise is that it's a reliable neighborhood restaurant. I live not that far from it and when I go there I know that I can order the same thing or try something new on the menu and the food will be good with the meal marked by efficient and pleasant service. I wouldn't describe it as a foodie destination, I think of it more as a gourmet comfort food kind of place, but it certainly fits a niche for me and I keep going back. More...

I had booked a dinner for 30 people for my husband's 30th birthday. It was very easy to book through open table and Marie Louise Bistro confirmed the booking on the day. The table was all ready for us at 8 and the server was great. Very aware of when people needed things, prompt with service and had a sense of humor. menu was varied and the price was good (burgers for $10, entrees less than $20). We didn't have to wait long for the food- less than 1/2 hour which i thought was very good considering we had a big group. Most of the group really enjoyed their meal. Some of the meals seemed a bit small. Most were a generous size but some, like the lamb medallion and tiger fish, were really small. Ok for small eater. Overall, great place. More...

I took some of my students out to Easter brunch here, since it was one of the few places that seemed suitable for kids, classy but casual, and open for late brunch on the holiday (Saturdays and Sundays brunch is til 3, which is great). Parking was easy, the food was good, and we had a very pleasant time. I treated the group, and totaling $80 (including tip) for five of us was not too bad. I had the eggs benedict with jumbo lump crab and asparagus, and it was seriously killer. The beet salad and grilled tuna sandwich went over seemingly well, though the steak and eggs was a little less than impressive and came out to us cold. Good coffee, nice atmosphere. Service was a little awkward and also pretty slow. I'd recommend making a reservation, as the place seems to get pretty busy, even (or maybe especially?) for lunch. More...

Marie Louise has yet to disappoint. I have been several times and am always greeted by a kind, welcoming staff, and consistently good food. Most recently, my partner and I went on a Tuesday night. The dinning area was clean and quiet. My partner had the Tuesday steak special and I chose the chicken chesapeake. The steak was cooked perfectly and well seasoned but the pomme frites had seen better days. Most of the fries were overcooked. On the other hand, my chicken chesapeake was really great. The crab meat that topped the chicken was wonderful. The chicken tasted great but the crab made me wish I was eating a plateful of crab. More...
