How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
Please be aware that a huge A&E cost is DIY'ing at home, ladders especially. Always make sure that you have safe access and appropriate PPE like a dust mask.
Also note that under CDM Regulations, Health & Safety is the home owners responsibility. Unless you contract it out to your builder or third party properly (ie: risk assessments and method statements are in place, you are liable for the safety of the design and the workers at your project.
Can you build a loft in your house?
Check the ridge height of your and your neighbouring roofs.
In the existing loft - measure the height from the existing loft floor to the underside of the ridge board.
If the height is under six foot (2m) this is going to be more than difficult for regulations to approve.
If you need more height in your new loft one option, is to drop the ceiling down (windows on this level maybe an issue). You could experiment by measuring the ceiling height for this level.
Staircases and fire protection take up a lot of room.
