We just celebrated my birthday in the private room at Madison's Cafe. It was outstanding in every way. The room was beautiful with flowers on every table, linens in fall colors making each place setting festive. The table set up was ideal in an open U shape, leaving plenty of room in the center of the room for cocktails and visiting before dinner. The entrees we chose were cooked to perfection and served timely and piping hot. All the food from salad to dessert was so delicious. The wait staff, Morgan and Chris, were so professional and pleasant, dedicated to making us feel very well cared for. They took orders while the guests were still standing and visiting; then delivered them without confusion after the guests' were seated! The party was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. This "visit" was actually a catered event. Friends celebrating a 50th anniversary. When I asked who supplies the food the answer was Madison's. A couple of pastas were as good as pasta can be when prepared ahead of time and kept warm until serving. But, the salad was awesome and Italian bread from St. Louis' Hill Italian neighborhood was the best. Through the years I've visited Madison's many times on different days of the week, different times of day, for different purposes--date night, group meeting, small family outing, large family holiday get together. Our visits have always received good service and good quality food in an enjoyable atmosphere. On any visit the worst Madison's provided was simply an average experience. And that's why I was perplexed by the number of one-star reviews. From the comments I don't recognize the Madison's I've visited. Researching those reviewers indicates other issues are brought to their opinions about Madison's food quality and service. Any restaurant in this area providing one-star experiences as often as some Yelpers indicate would not last long: There are so many other dining options nearby--perhaps too many. National restaurant chains, regional chains, and independents have closed stores here within 5, 10, 20 years of opening. Madison's has been in St. Charles County for over 30 years. We got the fried zucchini it was sooo good crispy and well seasoned. There was a great portion too. I got the seafood pasta with shrimp, muscles, clams, a d scallops in a white sauce. Very rich and flavorful, I got the full size a d there was enough for 2 people!!. My husband got the dish with six large shrimp in sauce and pasta with a side and salad. Very very good and again large portions. The owners son was our server and was great in recommending our dishes. The owner came and spoke to us and our son for a while and was so sweet and kind. Dining here is a yearly tradition when I attend a summer conference in Jeff City. It is a American/Italian restaurant with friendly waitstaff and huge portions. On that note...order the lunch portions at dinner. There is no way you can eat all of the normal size meal. I ordered the caprese salad-it is huge! Don't order unless you plan to share or make it your meal. Huge slices of tomatoes, cheese and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic - a little too much IMO - but it was good. I  think the side salad is a better choice. I had a small portion of the aioli pasta without the baby shrimp and it was enough for me. They do bring tasty bread, a huge plate of olive oil mixed with garlic and Parmesan cheese-very rich but amazing! Don't fill up on it-may be hard to do if you like garlic bread.  Overall this is a nice place and I recommend you give it a try. There are a lot of pastas and protein dishes and you and your fellow diners will be able to find something you like or can share. More...
