Lucas Crawford, Personal Trainer locationChampaign, Illinois, Champaign

I offer personal training services to the Champaign-Urbana area. My area of focus is primarily strength training and exercise technique. I believe that these two things are the key to longevity in terms of exercise. Far too often I see people do too much too soon and with poor technique, which usually results in burn out, or worse, injury.

Strength training is very important, whether you're 18 or 72. Having a solid strength base will help you in all avenues of life in addition to boosting your confidence. It is my goal to make sure my clients learn the ins and outs of each exercise we do, and of course to educate them enough so that they can eventually train on their own without fear of making critical mistakes.

My coaching style is very down-to-earth. I'm not going to scream in your face or try to make you pass out. That kind of coaching is not going to teach clients the skills they need to make exercise a consistent part of their lives. It's not about torturing the client, it's about giving them the tools and skills they need to better themselves.

I'm certified as a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach through the NSCA, and am a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach through USAW.

Lucas Crawford, Personal Trainer Q&A

Company Q&A

How do you help your clients achieve their fitness goals?

I design exercise programs that are specific to each client's needs and ability. I'm also very attentive to detail and provide excellent coaching on the exercises my clients do.

What’s the secret to getting the body of your dreams?

Be realistic in your goals and the time frame in which you're looking to accomplish them. Once you have a realistic goal in mind, consistency is the most important factor. Don't constantly miss workouts and eat poorly and think that you will be able to accomplish your goals. Also, be ready to hit some low points during the process, things will get tough and sometimes it will seem like nothing is changing. This is completely normal, but as long as you stick to your plan the results will come. In other words, there is no secret, just hard work and perseverance.

What do you love most about your job?

I love seeing clients progress and get stronger. It's very rewarding for clients to be able to get to the point where they can do proper push-ups, pull-ups, and squats, among several other exercises.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I worked in public gyms for several years and I never really liked the environment. It was usually too crowded and even doing simple routines could sometimes be difficult. In addition, most gyms have predatory sign-up practices and cancellation policies, which can be very off putting to some. Due to these reasons, I decided to move out of the public gym setting and started training in a private studio. Equipment is available when I need it, and there are no ridiculous membership contracts or cancellation policies that are designed to bleed money out of the customer. It's just a much better environment overall.

Why should our clients choose you?

I've had several years of experience working with clients. I've spent countless hours doing research and getting in hands-on practice in order to provide the best possible training experience for my clients. I'm also not the typical trainer type, I was never involved with sports growing up and I'm not genetically gifted. I'm just a regular guy who had to work very hard to see any improvements in fitness. This gives me a pretty down-to-earth and realistic style that is aimed at getting the best results possible. I'm not going to waste your time with silly exercises that have no benefit, or giving you things to do that are far too challenging and outside of your skill level.
