I offer a friendly service which aims to help each dog and owner. I am always available to give advice to clients and non-clients, always with the interest of the client and the dog in mind. Having worked as a trainer and behaviourist for forty years I have a wealth of experience with all breeds and have owned many dogs myself, again a number of different breeds and crosses. All dogs are trainable when you find the right approach and receive the right help. My approach is always a kind one, which will get the best from your dog and with a little effort on your part will give you the rewarding relationship with your dog that all owners want.

I offer:
Puppy socialisation and early learning course, including lots of information on raising your puppy to be wellmannered (8 weeks, one hour per work),
Dog training classes (Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced). For puppies over five months and adult dogs of all ages. It is never too late to start training and we have had dogs of eight years old join our classes and achieve a good standard. All these classes are held at Gt. Cheverell, near Devizes, Wiltshire.
On Lead Group Walks - great for socialising your dog, increasing your knowledge of dog to dog behaviour, building your confidence around dogs, meeting likeminded people. Held in and around Devizes area.
Off Lead Group Walks - for dogs with a reasonable recall and social skills.
Behavioural modification work. Only occasionally is there a quick fix if your dog has unwanted behaviours, but with patience and perseverance you will achieve a change in his unwanted behaviour. The earlier you start the easier it is - like us dogs are creatures of habit - but you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Pre-purchase, puppy and rescue dog visits to talk over your concerns, advise and support you.

Superb training. Correct and professional but accomodates a wide range of dogs and owners. Tatty and I enjoyed it!

I very much enjoyed working with Sarah and Tatty while they completed their Puppy Course and progressed to our follow on classes.

Had an awful experience with this lady. I was told I must put the dog lead in my right hand. I'm left handed & therefore, left is my dominant & strongest hand. When I queried this, I was told that there were probably other people in group who were left handed & that I would have to put up with it! I felt belittled & this is NO way to speak to a paying client. A very unprofessional service & will definitely not be recommending to anyone.

Jill is a fabulous and knowledgeable trainer with so many years of experience. My boy Mylo loves going to her classes as it was fun as well as learning. I always recommend Jill and Leading Canines.

We have just finished the puppy training with Jill and Joss, well worth every penny.
Our Stafford, Jude has benefitted immeasurably, even coming first in his first dog show and was commended on his great behaviour in the ring.
We are looking forward to beginner classes soon (having a break to socialize him more and trying him off lead for recall) before we start again.
This is our second dog with leading canines, and I can't rate them highly enough.
Thanks to them both for their patience and guidance.

We've had help from Jill both with 1 to 1 behaviour advice, when we first had our rescue and then at her regular dog training classes and weekend walks - she's been fantastically helpful and supportive and we've learned lots - and had plenty of fun. Our dog is completely transformed and we've met lots of other lovely friendly dog owners - I can't recommend her too highly.

Manuka and I really enjoy our training with Jill and I have learned so much about how to become a better owner. Jill has a lot of expertise and the classes are friendly and relaxed - dogs and owners learn better like this. The group dog walks are fun too and allow the dogs and owners to make friends. I can recommend Leading canines to any owner - we keep coming because Manuka loves it. The weekly newsletters are a really good idea and often have useful tips and info.

Leading Canines Q&A

Leading Canines Q&A

What do you love most about your job?

Seeing the relationship between owners and dogs blossom and become more rewarding to both. How many people get to do for a job what they most enjoy ? I find all dogs endlessly interesting,

What inspired you to start your own business?

Having enjoyed working with my own dogs from the beginning, forty years ago, it snowballed - there are a lot of dog owners who struggle with training and behavioural issues and I was asked more and more often to help other people who noticed my success. It remained very low key as I raised my family - I am passionate about ensuring children grow up to behave safely around dogs and get the pleasure from them that I have had . I continued to gain qualifications and eventually decided to open a proper business.

Why should our clients choose you?

If you want to achieve a happy, well behaved dog and are committed to putting in the really not very arduous effort needed I will work with you and support you, whether you need one to one help or classes. You will find trainers/behaviourists out there who have a lot of modern theoretical knowledge and will fling terms at you which you may not understand if you don't happen to have a psychology degree; many of these have no real hands-on experience and may never have owned a dog of their own! You will still find some who use old-fashioned, harsh methods which as well as being cruel don't actually work well. And then there are those who are only interested in training wellbred young puppies who are problem-free, pedigree dogs or who shy away from dogs of breeds they don't personally happen to favour!
In fact, the term "dog trainer" is a misnomer as actually the instruction is given to the owner, so the correct term is dog training instructor! I will teach you how to train/manage your dog and teach him to be a good companion. He lives with you and you are his whole life.
