Tried their macarons finally and although I didn't expect much, these were pretty good!Vanilla, rose, salted caramel were the ones I tried. Rose one doesn't smell or taste like rose. I thought the flavor and scent were like almost expired food. I think I read a review saying the same thing and I now believe it. Not sure why. I don't recommend the rose one.Salted caramel is really good. It is usually my favorite macaron flavor at any store and become one here as well.I dislike anything overly sugary especially with macarons and the ones at LCB give me just the right amount of sweetness when I'm craving sugar.The macaron shells really give me the good, nutty flavors of almond flour and like the texture (crunchy and chewy).Still, I really recommend their newyork cheesecake (red velvet bottom) and earl grey tart the most! My favorite bakery in all of OC! LCB is owned by Jin and Liz, a young couple who are both super sweet and humble. Liz is the patissier and master behind all of the yummy treats they produce. The cafe is not only clean, spacious, but also super cute! I recently spent an entire day just working out of the cafe.My favorite items to get here are:- red velvet cake (Best I've ever had. Hi!  Well, I liked the bakery and the cookie & coffee just fine, but I'm mainly writing to give a brief shout-out to Chelsea. She was welcoming, enthusiastic, knowledgable, informative, attentive to my wishes, and receptive to my comments. Also, a rarity these days: she even thanked me for my business (as I thanked her for her service.) Her beaming smile did not hurt, either. Chelsea is an alert, friendly young lady, and a sterling asset to LCB. My energy was braced by the iced coffee, and my afternoon enhanced by that brief moment with her. It's not every day that a young employee makes such an impression on an old goat like me. LCB has been my go to bakery for many years now. Liz transformed my ideas into a cake for my husband's 40th and I was sold! She has helped make my son's 10th Birthday cake a hit. That success made my friends a repeat customer here too, for many years now.And am back again here for my daughter's birthday cakes.Liz was open to going the extra mile and considerate to work within my limitations and preferences. My family and I don't really buy bread or sweets so despite living right beside this bakery, the only restaurant we knew really was the pho place that's next to LCB. Well, after almost 10 years of living in the same area, someone I know brought us to this place after having ramen saying this is probably the best in this area. I thought, 'oh finally I get to try out this bakery I see every time we have pho'.I have been to LCB for cakes and teas several times since then and here's my personal review on their place!FOOD: 4.5/5First of all, I don't like baked goods that are overly sweet like the traditional american cakes and cookies with colorful, extremely sweet frostings found at local groceries. So, I was so glad that this place was more contemporary than traditional american. I to love pastries and tarts over breads and cakes usually and also love Japanese and French styles vs. american.The BEST baked goods out of the ones I've tried (tarts, cakes, cheescakes): not in any order, love them all equally1. Cheesecake with the red velvet bottom2. Berry tart3. Earl Grey tart4. Creme Brulee5. EclaireI haven't tried macaron, cookies, breads cause I don't really have interest in those usually (maybe will try macaron cause I do sometimes look for good macarons that are not too sweet :) )1 point off for two cakes we've tried:You can do whole cakes but they also provide slices of them. I tried their Lemon Raspberry and Red Velvet cake slices cause my friends got them. They were both not very memorable. So, while the cheesecake with red velvet bottom was so good, I wouldn't get lemon raspberry or red velvet cakes again. To explain more in detail why I or my friends didn't really like these two cakes: Lemon Raspberry was actually pretty ok with the lemony and raspberry flavors but tends to be more on the sweeter side. The red velvet was very disappointing because it was very bland with not enough chocolaty flavor and texture you expect from a good red velvet. It was not bad-tasting so-to-speak but was definitely boring to which everyone agreed. Also, their tea is also good (I should find out what brand they use). I recommend "for her" if you want something without any caffeine and it smells and tastes good!Anyway, so far, Layer Bakery is the only bakery that I've been to in this area that makes me wanna revisit for their goods :)Totally recommend it. I have been using Layer Cake Bakery for all our events for the last 6 years. My kids love finding cake designs for their birthdays each year. And each year I take their ideas to Liz at LCB and she always exceed my expectations! Pictured below is the cake they made for my daughter's birthday over the weekend. It did not only look amazing, it was yummy! We got Tres Leches for the top tier was really good. But our absolute favorite (and we always get) is the Devil's Chocolate! I've only been twice so far but this is definitely my new go-to place when I have a craving for a good slice of cake. The tiramisu cake is my favorite so far and my sister loves the german chocolate. I've only had the cakes but they also have a nice array of cupcakes and other pastries like croissants, cookies, and scones. I had a nice latte as well and the women working was super nice. I order between 3-5 cakes here annually and have been doing so for about a decade now. Their red velvet is my family's favorite as it's never too sweet, the cake is never too dry, and it's never too overstuffed with cream. We've tried other types such as the German chocolate cake and most recently the hazelnut cake (my new favorite!) The smallest cake is a bit pricey for the size. I was a little disappointed as the most recent one wasn't decorated when I arrived at the pre-ordered pick up time. They decorated and wrote on the cake when I arrived, and it was supposed to be "Happy Birthday Dad" as written on the form and discussed in person when I arrived. They ended up accidentally leaving Dad out and did ask me if that was OK, but at that point I was in a time bind and there wasn't much that could be done anyway. What an amazing little bakery hidden in a plaza!! Both their sweet and savory items are absolutely delicious. Sweets: Highly recommend the Earl Grey Tart and Blueberry Almond Tart! ! Both so yummy, not too sweet and great size!! Savory: The Romesco and Club Sandwich are oh so delicious and satisfying! I've never had a sandwich like the Romesco and it is truly to die for. The homemade sauce and ricotta cheese are the best combination..I am craving for it now just thinking about it!I haven't ordered any custom cakes yet but they seem to have some really beautifully creative designs. When I walked in there was only one person waiting in line.  We stood for maybe 3 minutes before someone came to help us.  (The line grew .)  When she did, the line moved pretty fast and she was really sweet.I only ordered a cookies and cream cupcake, but wishing I had ordered more now that I finally have the chance to sit and share it with my boys.  I always eat just the cake first to see if it's tasty and it was!  The was dense, but still moist!  And oh so chocolately!Now on to the frosting.  I was thinking sickeningly sweet, but no!!  It was not sickening sweet!  It was perfect!  Yummy!  This is a place that I would love to try again if I'm in the area!  The only reason for the 4 stars was the wait. My girlfriend and I ordered a tres leches slice of cake and a red velvet cupcake. My cake was delightful. It wasn't your traditional "soaked in milk" constancy! So I stopped in here after eating Pho next door, and let me tell you, I'm so glad I walked in. They have the BEST Tres Leches Cake. I decided to try the red velvet as well the other day and it was delicious as well. They have a couple other flavors like tiramisu, strawberry, and German chocolate. OMG! LCB is my daily Sunday getaway for the best omelette, hash browns, and sourdough toast breakfast in town.....then, my biggest fear appeared before me when I went in this morning and was told that they had removed all omelettes, hash browns, and sourdough toast from their menus! !! *Gasp*....!!! OH NO! Is this really true? Did this really happen to me? Am I still asleep and still dreaming this awful dream?! No, it's for real. The owner confirmed it and said that this was being planned since over a year ago....gosh, you could guys could have at least given me the heads up so that I could gradually ease into my new life devoid of my regular Sunday California omelette and hash browns!But alas! There was a couple in front of me who were also there for their omelette breakfasts, but were told that they were no more. I could literally see the excitement and anticipation of an awesome omelette breakfast turn into a kind of sadness and disappointment, as though just told that that their favorite doggy had passed.Scouring through the new menu, I tried to find something that really piqued my gastronomical interest, but nothing really seemed to compare to my usual. I finally decided on the French Toast, which I had seen many people order in the past, but never tried it myself......well, so I thought. It seems the French Toast recipe changed too......instead of stacks of French toast, it's now like a sweet mascarpone sandwich.....didn't feel or taste like a breakfast.....much more like a dessert. Don't get me wrong, it tasted good...perhaps a bit sweet for my taste, but it's just not breakfastsy (yes, I know there's no such word). But wait! There's still hope! Before I left, I had a chat with one of the servers, and she informed me that the owner had heard the plight of the disappointed couple before me, and told her that they will now consider bringing back the omelettes, hash browns, and sourdough toast! YAAAAAY! I was SO ecstatic to hear that!....and really hope they do! Yes, I know most ingredients have gotten prohibitively expensive with the California inflation and all, but you don't mess with the things you are so good at! I think that most of us who want really great quality food have no choice, but to pay for it.... and I am most willing and happy to pay for such an excellent and yummy breakfast! Gosh, it's like going to McDonald's and being told that they replaced their French fries with carrot sticks! Gasp!!!....can you imagine MickyD's asking customers....."would you like to biggie size those carrot sticks?!" Yikes!Looking forward to the return of my delicious California Omelette, the best hash browns in town, and that yummy sourdough toast that makes the whole breakfast just perfect! LCB is one of my favorite places. I have been here on multiple occasions.I've always had amazing cookies, cakes from here. Especially their french toasts and cookies are to die for and all of the options are delicious. Last time I came for brunch and I really enjoyed Berry French Toast. Berries were so fresh and french toast was a perfect portion of deliciousness and so soft, baked well. I had toast with latte. Latte was also amazing. And of course I couldn't leave LCB until I got some cookies to take home. They have several flavors. I recommend chocolate chip cookie, peanut butter cookie. But the others are so good too.
