Love the Downtown Y. A block from work. It's so big with so many stations. What really makes it for me is the people. Helpful, engaging trainers and a diverse base from all walks of life.

It's too early to give this place 5 stars. They just opened recently, so they are still renovating and there's a lot more potential. There's also what seems like the inevitable likelihood that the more people that find out about this gem, it will get way too crowded. In any case, at this moment: My main opposition to going here would be limited selection of workout equipment...not small by any means, but definitely less than the Wallingford YMCA. The positives: the gym is extremely clean...the equipment looks brand new and its one of the few gyms I've been to where there's a decent amount of people actually using wipes to clean equipment after use, or placing towels over equipment. Another plus: availability of clean towels. Locker rooms are extremely clean. Clean showers. Clean bathrooms. Clean lockers. Comparative to a 3- or 4-star hotel. If you're thinking about driving, YMCA validates parking garage ticket...only $2 for 2 hours. Another big plus: They have a pretty big swimming pool that they're currently renovating. Verdict: Definitely worth checking out whether or not you've used a YMCA gym in the past. You will be impressed. More...

I like the design and the equipment is new. The different room design for clases are nice. The towel service is great. The ability to enjoy a massage is also great. I also enjoy the women's locker room and steam room. However I think they close too early and the bathroom could be better maintained. Clean the showers, bathrooms and the steam room more often. I've been a Y member since I was 11 and took Gymnastics in New Canaan, CT. I worked out a lot in Greenwich and Milford. My children spent time at the wonderful Camp Sloan in Lakeville and the Milford Y. On September 11th I had just dropped my son into the baby room and was hopping on the stairmaster when I looked up at the TV and saw the towers. Even to this day I am comforted that I was in one of my favorite places at that moment.

In recent years I returned to school and joined the Elm City Y. It's great and I can look out on the green and see some familiar faces while working out. I have been lately visiting Middletown's Y and enjoy its atmosphere and staff. The Downtown Y, however, was amazing. I was so well greeted and handed a fresh towel. The locker room was clean and had plenty of lockers, benches etc. But once I got going on the rower I was amazed at the energy around me. The lunchtime crowd was in full force and the best part was the group of adults playing competitive work out games guided by nice, normal, smiling trainers. It looks like they are working on some areas like the pool. All in all, it make me reconsider moving my job search to Hartford...really enjoy something working well in CT and can't wait for the next time...
