L J's Deli

I made my first visit to L.J.'s Deli San Rafael to cash in a free sandwich card (handed out to businesses in the neighborhood). I ordered the Subhut which the owner, Kaity (very pleasant), said they had been serving for 50 years(!). Once I tasted it, I understood why - layers of flavor and texture that you can almost experience just by looking at it. Too bad I missed out for 46 years (my whole life in Marin), but I hope to enjoy it for the next half century. LJ's is secluded within an office park (like other hidden gems in Marin), but there are signs to direct customers. I will definitely be back to try more offerings from their extensive sandwich menu with economical prices. It will be hard not to order the Subhut again...will bring my husband (he's actually the one who works nearby) and order two sandwiches to share on a lunch break date. More...

Terra Linda has limited food options,  so i was delighted by my healthy, yummy meal at LJ's! This place is located in an office park, near the back. I had the "tuna salad salad". All of the ingredients were fresh and the portion size was great for the price. I noticed that they have a wide assortment of sandwiches and salads (maybe 10 of each) and the staff was friendly and accommodating. So I was down in Petaluma today for work and I was starving and wanted a sandwich. I looked on Yelp and try to find a good sandwich place I found LG is and I decided to choose it. Parking is pretty difficult as you have to park on the street and then walk up or you can park in the parking lot. You walk in and the place is pretty big with indoor seating as well as an outdoor patio that is covered with couches other comfortable furniture. I ordered the special of the day which was the pastrami. I got it without tomatoes and it was delicious if you check in on yelp you get a free bag of kettle chips which were a good touch to the sandwich. Ummm...I'm in love! The Subhut Special is so delicious! The perfect ratio of meat, cheese, bread and hot peppers! Kaity is so friendly and welcoming along with Flor! Love LJ's! It's such a quaint local deli that has super friendly staff, a decent menu selection, and good food! Also, you can order online and save tons of time! It's a little tough to find if you don't know exactly where it is. It's in an office park off Redwood Hwy, so I typically park across the street from Westamerica Back. Every time I walk in, I am greeted with a smile. Many times they remember me from a prior order and have a good guess about what I ordered or am about to order. They have a pretty great selection for breakfast, too. There just isn't a lot in the area in terms of quick, cheap (and tasty) breakfast, but you can get a pretty amazing breakfast sandwich or croissant at LJ's. Being a local, I do love supporting local, family run businesses. I used to go to LJ's when I was in high school but have not gone in years. I went in today to try the infamous subhut and was greeted by 2 nice ladies. They worked promptly and the sandwich was delicious. This is the best deli in the world, I've eaten sandwiches from California to Czechoslovakia so I know a thing or two about a good sandwich. From the moment you walk in the door you are greeted by the aroma of fresh bread, after being greeted with a smile by the incredibly friendly staff prepare to be dazzled with culinary excellence. After visiting twice in one week back in November, I knew I had to stop by LJ's again the next time I was in Marin County! I love that they have a custom salad option on their menu, with loads of fresh veggies and toppings to choose from. The service was excellent - friendly and fast! Oh, man! This place is such a great find. I was stuck in traffic one day and got a sudden and specific craving for a Dutch crunch sub with turkey, avocado and pepper jack cheese (does that ever happen to anyone else! ?). I made a quick pit-stop by LJ's after seeing the reviews on Yelp and GUYS - let me just say - my sandwich was amazing! I was able to customize it just the way I like it (extra mayo, please and thank you). Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious. It's also a super cute place with a cozy vibe and really kind staff. And as a side note... I love the fact that LJ's has been around for years and many of the reviewers on this page have been coming to this deli since they were kids. There's definitely something special here. LJ's has been a favorite of mine for a while. It is one of my favorite lunch spots. I love the professionalism and customer service that goes above and beyond. The owner has excellent customer interaction, each time I come here. I'm greeter with a smile from everyone that works at the deli. Don't be surprised if the staff all remember you and your name if you come twice or more. I usually buy the same sandwich and it's always consistent in quality and flavor. Having this deli close to work is also convinient. It's great to also get food at a great price compared to other places around the same area that will charge twice as much for lesser quality and service. This for me is the best deli in Marin. I first came here in the early to mid nineties on a recommendation of a friend and instantly was hooked. It shortly changed hands from that owner and I was concerned, but the new owner carried on the same tradition while pulling in some of his own from running his families shop Sharkies in Tiburon. Now there are new owners in the last few months and they have pulled forward those same traditions and brought this place into the 21st century while adding their touches. This place keeps getting better.Hands down my favorite turkey sandwich anywhere is here on sliced sourdough, Swiss cheese with everything. The bread is fresh, the vegetables fresh and crisp with a generous amount of turkey. The Sub Hut special is a local favorite that requires a fork and napkins, so good. They have great pre-made salads and now they seem to have some custom salads that they spent some time sourcing vegetables they felt were the best they could find. It has taken me 32 years to write this review. Last time I was here it was probably 1986. I have many memories of riding my bike all the way from Marinwood (on many occasions) to spend my newspaper delivery money on the Sub Hut Special. 32 years later I STILL think about that sandwich. I can honestly say it was the best sandwich I have ever had. And I have had a lot of sandwiches over the past 40+ years. Damn, I guess I am getting old. But I still feel like that 12 year old kid riding my Mongoose bike all the way to Sub Hut for that sandwich. And a game of Pac Man. Listen, if the current Sub Hut Special is even 40% as good as it was back when I was a kid, it's worth every cent. I can still smell it. I think I will plan a Marin trip this year and test it out. Been my spot since I went as a little kid when it was called sub hut and the older European couple were here. My order is the sub hut special with no peppers and they rarely have it but ask about the cheesesteak sandwich. .you can't go wrong with either. Top notch local sandwich/salad place in a generally not-food-friendly industrial area. Affordable sandwiches and other goodies, freshly made. Even when it's crowded, they can get through the queue quickly. More of a local secret; the owner has been around Marin for a long time, and has deep ties to the community and his customers. I like the roast beef sandwich, but there's a little something for everyone (including taco salads). No online presence as far as I can tell; you just have to drop by and find something you'll like. Appears to be owner operated. Very friendly. Great selection of chips and beverages. Even a few beers.Not sure where their bread comes from. My sour roll was pretty chewy. Meat was good. I found this place about two months ago.  Since then I have eaten here EVERY DAY on my lunch break (Monday thru Friday).  The sandwiches are some of the best I have ever had and the guys that work there are really friendly.  They remembered my name right away and now they know my order by heart.  Every time I go in there I am reminded of  the "Cheers" song "Where everybody know your name..."  This is the deli version of Cheers.  LOVE THIS PLACE!!  Even if you don't work nearby, I strongly recommend that you stop by one day for lunch.  I have to warn everyone... once you eat here you are hooked. Gotta love this owner-run deli that tops the rest in quality and flavor.  Not only do their sandwiches rock, but they toss a killer bean salad and there are always a few other creative selections in the case, such as lasagna or tomales.  In contrast to other reviewers who seem to be anti-change, I knew this place when it was Subhut, and prefer the new LJ's.  Their customer service is great and they can get your order ready in a snap even when there's a line.  It's no wonder they've perfected their operation... it's the same team everyday: LJ himself, and his trusty sidekick, Adrian.They have a great selection of local bottled beers, and tons of other beverages to choose from.  Hats off to this tiny kitchen that keeps so many stomachs happy throughout their work day. I had the pleasure of going into LJ's for lunch the other day while in the area for a job interview.  I was starved and am the professed sandwich king by my family.  ok eough about me.I had an egg sandwich with chips and a soda..My sandwich was with a big tasty heated croissant yummy..I also had the great fortune of meeting LJ himself and all I can say is what a great human being who happens to make great affordable sandwiches with comfortable seating.You owe it too yourself to go their for lunch and try out what looked like thr many delicious things to eat.. The Sub Special, which used to be the Sub Hut Special, is made almost exactly the same way it was over 30 or 35 years ago when I started eating there as a kid.  Better yet, it tastes the same, meaning just as good & flavorful, as it did then.  It is truly rare to go back to a place, in this case repeatedly over several years, where what you thought tasted good when you were a kid still does so when you're "grown up."Soups & other sandwiches are also of high quality, decent selection of chips and other snacks & drinks, including beer.Mellow atmosphere, always nice & cool inside during summer heat.  Sandwiches travel pretty well too, so you can pick one up before heading out to McInnis Park or China Camp.   Prices still reasonable. A total "lunch spot for the local professionals" -- this place has one item of serious note:  THE SUB SPECIAL.  This sando is remnants from the prior owners (Sub Hut), and is out of control.  Even with the recent price increase, this sando has more meat, cheese, mayo, onions, peppers, SHREDDED LETTUCE (+1), dice tomatoes (++1) then you could ever want.  They even give you a fork with it.  A fork  Yeah, because this thing is huge and messy.  All for like $6.00If you have a delicate stomach, lay off the onions and/or peppers, as you may be consistently hitting up your nearest "facilities" an hour or two after consuming. =)Recommend calling the order before the lunch rush comes in around.
