What’s the secret to keeping a party dancing all night long?
Know your audience, ease them into the night. Most people don't feel confident enough to dance until they've had a few drinks and settled into the night. A DJ set is a marathon not a race. Of course every set is different as you have to judge the crowd, but I usually start off with some disco, then into some classic / commercial house, and finish with some vocal classics (anything from Womack & Womack 'Teardrops' to Kaiser Chiefs 'Brightside'). It's always good to test the water with a few tracks, if they like classics like 'Come On Eileen' they will most likely love 'Mustang Sally'. Most people love songs they can sing along to and there's plenty of those locked in my playlist! If people are making requests for songs, I will always try and play them and can then judge the sort of music that will keep them going.
If it's a younger crowd who particularly like house music, then I would warm them up with some vocal house & disco, and then ease into the more uptempo / underground house. Throwing in some classic house or some 'forgotten gems' always bodes well with the crowd.
How would you describe your ‘style’?
I have a versatile sound, it all depends on the audience, the time & the place. My chosen sound is house & disco, however, I am impartial to playing some classic rock, pop & soul numbers, by the likes of Kings Of Leon, Prince, Freddie Mercury, The Commitments, Dexys Midnight Runners, Chic, Aretha Franklin. It's all about timing and catching the audience off guard, building their night up and finishing on a high.
What do you love most about your job?
Knowing people are having a good time because of the songs you're playing is the best feeling! It's great to see people lose themselves on the dance floor and let their hair down, bringing back the good times through the nostalgia of the music.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have always loved music and have a lot of friends in the music industry. I'm lucky enough to know some of the best house music DJs in the world, so my inspiration is always coming from them.
Why should our clients choose you?
I don't just have one particular sound, I listen to what the audience / client wants, can easily judge a crowd and have great crowd interaction. I also have an amazing vocalist, saxophonist and violinist which can be booked to add that extra energy and give the night a bit more versatility.
