As someone who doesn't really 'do' online, i've never had a website before but new customers are increasingly asking if i have a website so that they can see some examples of my work. I wanted a website that i wouldn't have to do much to maintain but something that looked good to show to customers. This was all the information that i gave to Alex when he designed my website as i didn't know what else I could add that would help. The website that Alex created for me was far better than I had hoped for - simple and maintenance free as it links to my existing Rated People page, but also looks professional to present to customers. I've also started ordering my business cards and letterheads through Kingsley Media as the prices are far more competitive than what i've paid before. I've complete trust in Alex's design and recommendation, and I can't express enough praise for Kingsley Media. More...

Starting a web design project, talking with those agencies can be a daunting task. Yes, websites are one of those great business tools, but if you go down the wrong path to start with it can quickly become a nightmare. The brief guide will explain 6 things you should remember; these are in no way an exhaustive list but should give you some guidance.

1. What is the aim of your website?

This is probably the most important question to ask yourself, and one I ask all clients. Without a goal or purpose, how do you know what you will want creating, and how it should be created?

2. Do you want people to be able to find you on search engines?

Rather an obvious answer for most, normally the answer is YES. However, most people do not realise what is involved in doing this. It does not magically happen and needs to be part of your budget.

3. Have you considered a responsive design?

Google’s latest update likes mobile optimised website’s if yours is not then you should strongly consider modifying it. If you are looking at a new project, make sure this is a priority!

4. What do your users want?

Many client briefs are written based on what they want to see; very few take the time to consider what their user want. Ask as many of your customers as you can what they would like to see. The response rates will surprise you, customers like being asked.

5. What Sites You Like?

Spend some time looking at competitors, makes notes about what they do well and things you would like to see. Then spend some time looking for that cool design you want, your favourite typeface and colour scheme.

6. Content Managed

Ensure you have easy access to your content so that you can make changes when needed. Content Management Systems (CMS) are the best solution for this.

6. Budget

Have a budget in your mind; website prices can vary a lot. Make sure you understand what you are getting for the money, cheap is not always best. For an idea on pricing check out my web design estimator.

Being creative and designing creations that my clients love!

I literally get to spend my day creating things, one day it could be a website the next day a brochure. It's fun, i love doing it.

It's been something I have wanted to do for years, probably going back to my college days. I never got rid of the desire during University or for the 3 years I worked as a Business Development Manager. I had some great times while I was an employee, but could never shake the nagging part of me that kept pulling me towards building my own business, the idea of creating something from nothing really appealed to me.

I chose to build a business around web and graphic design, I have always had a passion for this. All through college and University I kept self-teaching myself to 'design' . Web design has always interested me, so naturally, the business has headed in that direction.

This doesn't very well answer the question of what inspired me, but I suppose the answer is the idea of creating something from nothing and watching it grow. Who knows where it will lead you.

Plus the other little bonuses of a very short commute, literally down the stairs and the lunchtime walk with my dogs is a very nice perk!

My passion for UX started back in my first job out of University. I was tasked with project managing the company’s new website build, as we were using an outside agency to build our WordPress site. After launch, I learnt to update, maintain and improve the website we had. This is where my initial interest in web design / development began.

Over many evenings I spent hours learning about design, development and WordPress, which led me to building my first site for a family member. It wasn’t great, but at the time I was proud of it. From there I completed a few more small sites.

Eventually I ended up leaving the company I was working for, to create my own business and provide myself more time to study. Three months into running the business I came across the term UX, so my next study path started! I spent hours reading books; anything from Don’t make me think, Elements of User Experience, and the UX Team Of One, to mention just a few.

About Kingsley Media LTD, UX Design, Design Sprints, UX Designer, UX Consultant
My studying moved online thanks to the Interaction Design Foundation (an amazing non-profit community), where I have taken many courses and I am still taking on more today. Profile

Most recently I have been working for a company as a UX Designer, working on a multitude of projects ranging through web/mobile apps, CRM, project management, and web development.

My passion for UX has never changed, but recently I have been learning more about Front End Web Development, the cloud, and PHP to help build this site. So, I guess I’m becoming more of a hybrid; a passion for UX, but I also love to know how to build the final product!
