Q&As

Talking to interesting people and learning new things. I'm a journalist by training and interested in people, so I like to get to know the people I meet through my work. I've found curiosity is often useful to the writing side of what I do because it's often how I discover the insights that go to lift copy from good to outstanding. It's the polar opposite of the one-size-fits-all approach that treats writing as content.
I also love language, which is a must for a copy-editor/proofreader. As a word nerd I'm a big believer in the value of plain English; if people struggle to understand what you're talking about, it's often because you're using jargon, or words that aren't clear.

Failure! I was working for the BBC as a TV producer and expecting to spend years climbing the corporate ladder. The problem was that viewers hated the last show that I was involved with, and the management listened to the numbers and opted to dump the failed project.
Before joining the BBC my ambitions had been to a writer, and to live by the sea. The offer of voluntary redundancy made that possible. I've been happily freelance ever since, and now live 10 minutes from the beach.

Experience. I'm fairly new to Bark, but I'm not new to working with words. I started out earning my living with words as a trainee news reporter in 1982, so I'm heading towards 40 years as a pro. You learn each and every day, and I believe it's that know-how that makes me the right choice for you.

I do 90% of my work remotely. I have lots of clients that I've worked with for years, but never met face-to-face.

I've been delivering all services online/remotely since March 2020. It limits my chances of contracting Covid-19, and of my transmitting it to others.

Services

Whatever you plan to do with what you write, you know there's always a risk that errors can slip through. It's embarrassing - and sometimes costly.
My professional proofreading service is all about preventing errors in copy that is just about to leave you and go to its audience, whether that’s online or in print.
I will spot any mistakes in spelling, punctuation, grammar and word usage, as well as inconsistencies and problems with clarity and flow.
Whatever the project, it's my job to be the make sure it is as good as it can possibly be.

My copy-editing service is all about making your writing better. It covers all the problems that proofreading is about, such as checking for grammar, spelling, style, and punctuation issues, but then goes further.
As your copy-editor I will work to correct wordiness, remove jargon, and improve clarity and tone of voice. If necessary, I will rewrite your copy to improve its readability.

I'm a trained journalist and a published non-fiction author. I have a wealth of experience creating different sorts of copy for all sorts of clients, including businesses, public bodies, and leading charities.
I will work with you to craft copy that is perfect for your project.
