What makes a great website?
An effective modern Website should have a clean, easy-to-navigate design layout. It is also essential that your Website is as "Mobile Friendly" as possible, as Google (and others) take this important factor into account when deciding which Websites should appear higher on their results pages. Try and avoid being bewitched by any "mod-cons" - and focus on keeping things as simple and clear as possible. I can advise on how to achieve these aims in more detail when we discuss and plan your Website.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
(in no particular order!) Q. Have you had a Website before.. ? / Q. What is your primary objective / reason for launching a Website.. ? / Q. Do you have a budget in mind for investing in the development of your Website.. ? Who are your local / regional / national / international competitors.. ? / Q. Are there are Websites you have seen that you particular like (or dislike..) - and if so, why do you like/dislike them.. ? / Q. Is there a set deadline for the completion and launch of your Website project.. ? / Q. How you would grade your own level of knowledge about Websites and digital marketing.. ? / Q. Do you have any experience promoting your Website and/or offline business by using Social Media.. ?
Describe your creative process.
Wherever possible (and geographically practical) I always like to ideally meet up with Clients to discuss their hopes and plans for their Website "face to face". I've found that this fast-tracks the early stages of any development process - and it is always of course a real bonus to meet people "properly" in person too. Having said that, I do have some clients on my books who I have actually *never* met - so if you are based a considerably distance away from Sheffield (where I am based), then this might not necessarily be a problem!
Once an initial conversation/meeting has taken place, I then go away and put together my recommended Plan of Action for the client - before delivering this (typically on an email or PDF document). This important, purposefully straightforward document is designed to plan out the project - and is intended to be a collaborative resource (i.e. I actively encourage feedback and additional input from prospective clients).
In parallel to this, I also put together some more accurate ideas on projected costings for the project - so clients have a clear idea of how much their Website will cost. Again, these figures are presented on an itemised, easy-to-read A4 sheet of paper (issued as a PDF over Email) - and I also ensure that any on-going are clearly highlighted as such on the document (for example Website Hosting and Domain Name registrations).
Under most circumstances a Website *will* have such running costs to take into consideration (for Year 2 and beyond) so I strive to make this as clear and transparent as possible, from "Day One".
Once the project plan and formal quotation have been approved and agreed, I then schedule in the project at the earliest opportunity. Past experience shows that assigning a realistic (i.e. achievable!) completion date for the project can help focus the mind of everyone involved. If a project has a particularly tight or immovable deadline, it is vital that this is disclosed and factored in at the earliest opportunity.
During the design and development process, I aim to keep clients regularly updated on progress (typically via Email, or over the phone) - and also encourage clients to supply any required text and image content as soon as possible (in order to ensure you have a clear idea of what is required, I can offer advice on such things as how much written information is required - and also what file formats are supported for photographic and other digital content).
As the project approaches completion, I issue a private but "Live" demonstration link (URL) to the client - and he/she/they are actively encouraged to take a detailed look at the suggested design and layout - before supplying me with feedback and also notifying me of any amendments and/or corrections that may be required. Depending on the nature of this response, I then work through any such changes/updates - and then re-activate the demonstration URL.
Providing all is well with the updated demo version, the Website is then completed and launched (but only when both parties are happy and in agreement that the Website is "Complete" and fit for publication online.
Soon after the Website is published, I notify Google and Bing (the two major Search Engines) of the Website's URL - and also extensively promote the launch via my own Social Media channels (typically Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram).
What do you love most about your job?
Of the many digital marketing services that I provide, my outright passion has to be eCommerce (buying and selling online). The sheer scope of opportunities available can be potentially overwhelming.. but I thrive on determining the "best" solution for a given situation - whether it be helping some launch a Shop on Ebay, creating product lines on Amazon, or diving in with their very own online shop.
On a day-to-basis, I enjoy discussing new and exciting ideas with businesses and individuals - and then helping them make such concepts a reality, by way of launching or improving their Website.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I've been building Websites for businesses and individuals since the late 1990's. Over that time I've seen new technologies come (and in some cases such as "Flash", go..) - and have a very broad range of experience - creating effective Websites of all shapes and sizes!
Having worked initially for a local Chamber of Commerce (18 months) and then a popular Website design business based in the Peak District (12+ years), I long harboured ideas to eventually launch my own Website Design and Consultancy business. Eventually the time was right - so in the spring of 2013 I did just that!
Since then I've managed to hit the ground running and have also grown and developed the business year-on-year since its inception. My only regret thus far has been that I should have launched my own venture sooner! (as I enjoy it so much).

If you are looking for a truly personal service, with a direct line of contact with the person who will be designing and developing your Website (and/or logo), then look no further. As a sole trader I am able to offer a one-to-one service to all new and existing clients at all times. I also take pride is establishing and developing long-term relationships with customers. Projects undertaken by Mounsey Web Consultancy are *not* on a "conveyor belt" system! One thing I always advise customers is that "Day 1" of your online business adventure is when your completed Website has been launched. Post-launch services such as statistical analysis (using Google Analytics) and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and monitoring can all play a vital role in helping you to get found and noticed online. I specialise in these services, in addition to the preceding design & development process.

I am a traditionally trained and also self-taught HTML/CSS/JS grounded Web Site Designer. Additional (developing) skills include the likes of HTML5, WordPress and CSS3. I also have a working knowledge of JQuery techniques - with some PHP in the mix too, as and when required. I typically code all of my projects by-hand - and also thrive on further enhancing responsive WordPress Themes and layouts - via my own "Child" themes.
Social Media Marketing
I have many years of "hands on" experience working with all of the major Social Networks. Including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Flickr. I work closely with my Clients to help them get the most out of their Social Networking Channels - and also help integrate such activities with their existing Websites.
I am passionate about informing Clients about the vital importance and value of analysing the demographics and behaviour of visitors to their Websites. Working typically with Google's market-leading Analytics platform, I setup and install tracking code as a matter of course on all of Websites that I design and develop - and then periodically review the information recorded, before feeding this back to Clients. Enhanced, in-depth reporting services are also available. These involve me taking a more detailed look at patterns of behaviour on the Website in question - and using such statistics to influence future developments on the Websites being monitored. Never underestimate the power and value of effective Web Analytics and analysis!
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
I have several years of "hands-on" experience working closely with clients to help improve (and sustain) their rankings on Google, Bing and any other applicable search engine portals. I always use "White Hat" (i.e. legal / legitimate) techniques - and always report search engine rankings in a 100% honest manner (no warping of statistics or placings! If a site is performing poorly - or a ranking has slipped - you need to know the truth).
Selling On The Ebay And Amazon Marketplaces
I first joined eBay in 1998 and have successfully traded on the platform (as both Buyer and Seller), with several thousand completed transactions - and a 100% perfect "Feedback" rating, something of which I am very proud of. Over recent years I created a 2nd account, which specialises on "Entertainment" products - popular items including limited edition soundtracks, retro video games and original film memorabilia. This account has several hundred completed transactions (many of which were international deals) - and again has a 100% perfect Feedback record.
Peak Net Limited
From November 1999 to May 2012.
I spent several years at Peak Net Limited (a specialist eCommerce Website development company, based in the Peak District). My core responsibilities were: Website design, graphic design (including logo concepts, Web pages, internet advertisement banners etc.), Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) - and much more. I worked closely with dozens of varied customers over the 12+ years I was with the company - and helped nurture and develop several successful Web projects.
North Derbyshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry
From August 1998 to November 1999.
I was a member of the pioneering Internet department (also trading at the time under the name of "Chamber Internet"). Key responsibilities included designing and building professional Websites for local companies who were members of the Chamber of Commerce - and also (where required) assisting them with getting up and running with the likes of Email and internet connectivity (worth bearing in mind that this was at a time when Broadband scarcely existed ~if at all~, so businesses and individuals relied on "dial-up" modem connections to the World Wide Web! I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at the Chamber - and eventually left the organisations for pastures new, having been approached by a local design company, who I had worked closely with on selected projects.
SB Holistic Massage (sbholistic.co.uk)
After meeting at a local business networking event, Dr. Sarah Bryan of SB Holistic approached Mounsey Web Consultancy to design and develop the first ever Website for her Sheffield-based holistic massage and aromatherapy practice. The completed Website contains useful information about the range of treatments offered by SB Holistic. Since the successful launch of the Site it has been further expanded to include a small online shop and also the opportunity for visitors to purchase Gift Vouchers securely online. http://www.sbholistic.co.uk/
JMN Sports - Enhanced Online Shop
After the successfully design and development of their original Website (2013), JMN Sports Limited returned to Mounsey Web Consultancy to commission the production of their follow-up Website. Purposefully more retail-focussed, the all-new Site has been built on the EKM PowerShop platform and features a series of enhanced eCommerce options. There has been a particularly large amount of interest in their highly competitive personalise footballs services (enabling clubs and teams to have their own logos printed professionally on the balls, for a small additional fee per ball (£1 at the time of writing this). John Mounsey of Mounsey Web Consultancy planned, designed and developed the entire project from start to finish - with product information supplied by JMN Sports Limited staff.
JMN Sports Limited - Web Site Design, e-Commerce, Social Media
I was approached by JMN Sports Limited to assist them in launching their new start-up business on-line. After remastering their (existing, supplied) logo by hand, I created consistent, highly optimised Social Media accounts for the company on Twitter and Facebook. In parallel, I also worked closely with the JMN Sports team to plan and then develop their e-Commerce enabled Web Site for them. The completed Site offers high quality training and match footballs - to suit all levels of footballing ability and status - and received it's first bulk order within a matter of days of officially launching. Additional content includes a wholly automated and fully integrated RSS Feed supplied by BBC Sport - offering visitors to the JMN Sports Web Site up-to-the-minute football news from around the world. Individual pages have also been included putting the spotlight on local footballs teams - with an emphasis on "grassroots football" - a topic close the heart and ethos of JMN Sports Limited.
Alpine Fanatic Limited - Web Site Redesign
I was approached by the owners and operators of this luxury catered and self-catered ski chalets operator - and tasked with redesigning their (previously in-house designed) company Web Site from the ground-up. After close consultation to discuss the client's needs (and aspirations for the new Web Site) I recommended the WordPress offered the best platform the for the new Site - as this would enable the client to update the Site content with easy, post launch. The project continued over a period of weeks - and successfully launched in the Summer of 2013. Traffic levels for the Site have seen a healthy increase recorded over the first few months - and enquiry levels have been preserved whilst looking also set to increase over the coming weeks and months.
I planned, designed, developed and now host an all-new Website for Yorkshire-based outdoor play and leisure equipment specialists GroundPlay Limited. The Website was build using a customised installation of the market-leading CMS solution: WordPress.
Savills Barbers (Sheffield)
Having successfully helped create and launch a successful interim eCommerce solution for the business (powered at that time by TicTail), I was later approached by the management team to design, develop and host a substantially more complex Website for Savills Barbers. The project (http://www.savillsbarbers.com) was a significant challenge for me to deliver - on both a technique and design level. Working closely with the client throughout the development process, the completed Website launched on time and on budget - and the orders began to come in almost immediately. Since the Website launched, orders and visits have been received from all over the world (thanks to Savills substantial captive audience on their Social Media channels - but also the extensive SEO input I applied "under the hood" too). There are now plans for a potential second Website in the near future.
