I have experience of experiment design, project work and field studies with data collection both on a personal and group level. I have received training on experimental procedure, initially through following instructions and protocols on practical investigations and then formulating critiques on potential areas of error and suggesting improvements. This was followed by designing experiments and organising the pooling of data as part of small groups and ultimately having full control over the design, execution and reporting of my own projects.

I have experience of using different statistical tests and selecting the most appropriate method and level of significance for the circumstances. I have the ability to interpret the results and communicate them effectively within reports using suitable graphs and tables. Most of this has been done using Excel and includes use of r-squared, t-test, z-test, simple and multiple regression, one-way and two-way ANOVA, Spearman rank and the Mann-Whitney U test.

Research has been an interesting challenge for as long as I can remember. My pre-internet days were spent trawling through directories, books and magazines and joining clubs to find rare books and records. I've always been of an independent nature and have researched at various levels to pursue my own interests. These skills have been greatly developed through the spread of internet, life experience and continued formal education. I'm confident in my research skills and capable of working alone, independently, meeting deadlines and presenting my findings clearly.

Over the past years I have gained working knowledge of various computer models relating to carbon cycling, carbon reservoirs and climate change. I have learned to manipulate the settings to find solutions to theoretical and real problems and gain insight into biotic-abiotic interactions.
Models used include GENIE Earth System Simulator, Carbon Accounting Simulation Software version 1.2 (CASS), and the Java Climate Model.
I also have theoretical knowledge into the workings of other computer models with particular emphasis on their assumptions and limitations.

For a few months of the year I temporarily live in an old, traditional style house made of stone, wood and earth. I aim at low-impact living which includes organic gardening, use and maintenance of a composting toilet system and capture of grey water and rain water. Repairs to the property are done by my partner and me using local muds, clays and lime.

This may appear to be an area of personal interest rather than a skill for potential employability. However, much of my life learning and many transferable skills have been developed through long-term budget travel. (UNFINISHED)
