My wife selected this dojo 6 months ago for our son to go because of its Japanese authenticity. Sensei's approach to teaching is rooted in tradition where honor, dignity, respect and discipline is paramount. Expectations and standards are set high but they are enforced in compassionate and caring way. It didn't take long to see Sensei is tough but loving at the same time because he wants his students to be fully successful with Karate and more importantly, life! My 2 children and I go here for karate. The focused style of teaching has been beneficial for increasing my kids’ ability to learn anything and has improved their overall coordination. Incredible venue to learn & study Karate. Sensei Nagatomo has a special gift for teaching all ages. I've seen it wit my own eyes with our son Kaden age five. My son has learned how to throw a ball, hit a baseball, shoot a basketball, jump rope, has learned proper running techniques, can count in Japanese, has learned the white belt kata, has learned to punch, block, and kick. I have run, lifted weights,& played Texas football all my life plus a few years of Tai Chi. Karate as taught by Sensei Nagatomo is the most rounded activity I have found as far as mental and physical conditioning, education of culture, motivation, and performance recognition. Karate as taught at this Dojo can be learned by ANYONE! , regardless of age, sex, or stature, who is willing to listen, attend classes, practice, and take the time necessary to accomplish your goals."Karate has no end, just multiple beginnings". Sensei Nagatomo is a full time instructor who trained in Japan during college. He now travels to Japan twice a year to train with the Masters in Tokyo and around the world assisting in testing and clinics, His English is now excellent and he bridges the gap between Japan and the US in the karate world. He was a tournament champion and coached the JKA US team in international competition for many years. He is always thinking of new ways to teach and he is a charismatic instructor. I have trained across the country for 45 years in this style and he is an outstanding instructor and builder of character. Sensei’s years of working with children is obvious in his ability to draw out the best in each child. Students learn to embrace a way of life that promotes integrity, respect, and self-control. Our daughter has been part of NM JKA for over 2 years. Sensei and other ranking members of the dojo have helped to encourage her, not only in karate, but in all that she does. My son started middle school very shy, overwhelmed, with no ambition to get involved in any clubs or sports. Someone suggested Karate. We joined JKA of NM a little over a year ago, not knowing anything about Karate. When I say “we joined” even though my son is the only one participating in the class, as a family, we are all learning and growing through this experience. My son is a different kid now. He has found his passion. It is amazing to watch Sensei Yasuaki Nagatomo teach his class. He is a true Master in every sense of the word. He instills the value of Self- Confidence, Balance, Concentration, Focus and most importantly, Respect, Discipline, and Humility into each of his students. Not your average dojo! I joined 6 years ago and from the moment I stepped onto the floor, I knew I had found my second family! Friendly, helpful people welcome me into their karate community and strove to not only improve my fitness but also my outlook on life. I have found my self confidence in knowing I can now protect myself not only physically but that I can also emotionally deal with the daily stresses of life. I've made so many new friends and greatly strengthened the bond with my dad who does karate with me. We also love going to all the parties and social events that allow us time to get to know everyone outside of the dojo.
