So we are a start-up operation with a great software product. We have 8 investors, some of which are family. With investors and family on the line it was important that we set this business up the best way possible right from the start. There were 3 different government grants we wanted to apply for and we needed to submit a final business plan to the bank and our investors. We are software engineers, we write code. A business plan was required, sure we understand the concept, but what really was needed we wondered. We found James by doing a search online for accounting and business advice. After the first hour of meeting with James we knew we meet the right guy. Out bank was CIBC and it turns out that years ago James used to work for them in Finance. He knew what they wanted to see, and he knew the best way forward for our small team. I first meet Jamie of James Abbott CPA & Associates in February of 2017 just 60 days after experiencing an audit by CRA that did not go well. I was looking for a professional account that could clean up a history of bookkeeping issues and put my company back on the right track with CRA yet fight for every nickel I could keep. After the firs t hour of talking with Jamie I knew I found my solution. Within 3 days we had a plan of attack. Two weeks later my bookkeeping records were rebuilt properly. I started up a small business in 2013, it was a hobby business that involved arranging shows for arts and crafts companies to show their wares and arranging events for them. When I originally started it was quite small, small enough that I did not have to charge HST to anyone as I was only doing about $20,000 a year in sales. But it gradually grew and then really took off as I got better at it. Eventually I ended up way past the point that I should be charging HST to customers and was completely panicked because I didn’t understand my responsibilities and need professional help. I had a small HVAC business for 37 years with a strong client base. I took care of sales and support and my wife did the bookkeeping and my brother in law did our taxes for the past 18 years. My wife and I decided it was time to sell the business and retire. We had a strong offer for the business, but we were all at a loss as to the best way to sell it in terms of saving tax but ensuring we get paid. We were referred to James at James Abbott CPA & Associates by a local business associate in Whitby (James used to be located in Whitby but is now based out of Pickering). He was amazing. The tax advice on how to set up the sale alone was worth meeting him for but his work on upgrading our accounting procedures to show the real value of the business heled us increase the sale price by over 4%.
