Q&As

It may sound corny, but the thing I love most about my job is helping people to find and become the versions of themselves they were created to be. Every person is unique and everyone has a story to tell. I enjoy helping people realize that they are not alone, that there are real solutions to the problems they face, and that they are fully capable of finding those solutions. I also enjoy teaching and love helping other clinicians become more skilled in providing evidence-based clinical practices.

Inspiration is a funny thing and often comes in surprising places. Prior to starting my own business (and for several years following), I worked in the hybrid, public/private mental health system in North Carolina, assisting those most in need of care and least able to access it. I progressed through the ranks from clinician to clinical director in about five years. One of the lessons that I learned along the way is that, unfortunately, "the system" is often stripped down to the leanest possible version of care that provides bare-bones services to the people supported by it and little in the way of financial incentive to those providing services within it. At the same time, I have been on a decades-long spiritual journey during which I had often longed to fully incorporate my faith into my practice. Ultimately, the agency for which I was working at the time made a business decision that doubled the cost of healthcare to my family and me which (not surprisingly) was not accompanied by an equivalent increase in pay. I'd love to tell you that I started my own business for an incredibly noble purpose, but at the time, honestly, it was about survival. One amazing side benefit of that decision has been the opportunity to express my love for God in ways that were not previously possible. Three years after starting the business, I decided to make my practice my full-time job in order to have more control over the way people receive treatment and how services are delivered. In hindsight, there may be a few things that I would have done differently, but I have absolutely no regrets!

Many healthcare providers believe that our role is to tell you what is wrong with you and what you need to do about it. This is the basic tenet of the medical model. "You're sick! Do what I tell you and you'll feel better!" My practice has been built on three basic beliefs: First, you are the world's foremost expert on you. No one knows more about you than you do! Second, it is the providential combination of biochemistry and circumstances that allows me to stay in the chair, not on the couch (although I have spent my share of time on the couch, as well). There is no room for "us" and "them" here. We're all on this journey together. We all have struggles and we all need help sometimes. And last, but certainly not least, being a therapist is not just a job to me, but a part of my calling. I continually strive to provide you with respectful, compassionate, judgment-free services on your terms, at your pace, not mine.

Services

Individual therapy provides you with the opportunity to explore those things that are getting in the way of being the best version of you possible. In general, I prefer to use a combination of Person Centered Therapy (PCT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and motivational enhancement techniques to help people gain insight into themselves, look at what may be getting in the way of the change they desire. For those who desire to do so, I also incorporate biblical values, prayer and Bible study into treatment. Family therapy looks at the dynamics, roles, and expectations within the family system, helping people to look at themselves and the other members of the family in a different light, heal relationships and change the way they interact with each other.

Teaching, training and clinical supervision are areas about which I am extremely passionate. I provide in-service training events to agencies, churches and other organizations on a variety of topics. You can choose an existing topic tailored to your needs, or I can create a unique team building, education or training experience for your group.

Clinical supervision is vital to the success of any mental health agency, practitioner or group. All therapists—whether 25 or 55, a month out of school or two decades—can benefit from quality clinical supervision. Applying the same principles to clinical supervision as I do to the therapeutic relationship, I strive to inform the next generation of clinicians to always act in the best interest of the people they support, put the needs of others before their own, and challenge themselves to provide the highest quality in clinical care.
