Dog Training

Ian from four paws was very helpful, giving great advice over the phone. He advised me to contact the vet to rule out physical problems. If it is just behavioural we will definitely be using him for our dog. Just by the telephone conversation i would recommend him. More...

Very professional. Good common sense advice.

Well what can I say about Ian? Following a traumatic visit to the vets where I was told if I didn't get my dogs behaviour sorted I would have to consider finite care! I was totally horrified and quite traumatised by this, admittedly Charlie had been unusually awful I hadn't seen him so scared before, so that led me to seek out help urgently.
I came across Bark to get help, and Ian answered from his quick response and very encouraging reply we arranged our first appointment myself with complete trepidation and really thinking that there is no way Ian will sort my boys out. But boy was I wrong Ian is totally committed to making every dog he sees become the happy dog that they should be along with the owners, he is very passionate and a born dog lover, he reads body language so well, I'm truly amazed at what he has accomplished thus far. Ian's natural and calming approach just works, and has given me more confidence along the way.
We are using Behavioural Adaption Therapy in the form of classical music and I truly am amazed by the results, Charlie has severe sensitivities and psych' problems but he is really doing well. My other dog was an ankle biter and he has nipped it in the bud!!
So I truly highly recommend Ian if you have any concerns or problems he really knows his stuff!! Be prepared to put in 100% and you will be fully rewarded, still ongoing with treatment but the best decision I could have made, the alternative was unthinkable but a wake up call for sure, for the record my dogs are JRT's

Thank you Ian for the fantastic job you are continuing to do with my boys!!

Kindest regards

Amanda Bertie & Charlie!!

A very talented and honest professional. Sorted out many of the issues troubling my rescue dog in a single session. More to come. Highly recommended.

Q&As

I came into this business for the dogs. I absolutely love seeing a problem solved, a dog more relaxed, happy and balanced, and a happy owner. Even the most experienced dog owner can need a little help sometimes, or a difficult behaviour needs a way to be corrected or managed. It is a privilege to be able to help and set all four paws on the ground again.

From before I was born there have always been dogs in my family; the first two, and many after them, were rescues.
As a teenager I owned a deerhound x terrier; he was an absolute star, and helped my father through his heart bypass surgery, leading him away from what he was doing when he needed a rest. At some point my dog began lunging and barking at almost anything he saw on walks, such that he was impossible to walk.
We tried a 'behaviourist', whose advice was to tie him to a post in a barn, bring in another dog and let mine bark it out. This was clearly not good enough, something I would never do to him, and so my poor boy was confined to the garden. I knew then that I had to learn more about dog behaviour.
Years later, living and working in Poland, I adopted two beautiful Groenendael Belgian Shepherd dogs, who had been beaten and chained to a tree in a forest to die. Thankfully they were found, and taken to a small private rescue shelter where, two years later, I found them. The girl in particular had issues, and I began learning how to help unbalanced dogs in earnest. It became clear that this was what I needed to do with my life.

I have a lifetime's experience with a huge range of breeds and crosses, balanced dogs and those with issues. I 'read' and feel dogs; I understand their language, their needs and triggers, and how to help them become their better selves. I am committed to helping all dogs that need me, however I can.
I use a range of gentle, non-invasive methods ranging from positive reward-based reinforcement, the incredibly simple and successful Behaviour Adaptation Therapy for many conditions from over-enthusiasm through aggression to chasing livestock, to old-fashioned dog whispering where I 'read' a dog's mood, body language and responses, and create conditions for the dog to feel more balanced. When the 'tried and trusted' methods from the books fail, I find an effective, kind alternative.
I have two dogs, a Flat Coated Retriever x Groenendael 6 1/2 year old girl, and a 4 year old Flatcoat x collie x Golden Retriever x collie boy. My girl is the prettiest dog I have ever seen, beautiful, elegant and 'sensitive', meaning she can be jumpy, is very sensitive to harsh commands or the moods of those around her, and is very sensitive to criticism. This is a rare condition I occasionally see in my clients. She is a double rescue, having been brought over from Romania at 6 months by a UK rescue charity and homed with a couple who took her back to the charity a year later. She spent the next 6 months in different foster homes until I found her. I bought her home for a trial but by the next day had phoned the charity to tell them she was staying. She has a stiff shoulder, a stiff joint in her back, and is prone to hip dysplasia, something we found out when she was x-rayed for a damaged cruciate ligament! Following cruciate ligament TPLO surgery on both knees she has been signed off hydrotherapy and is now bouncing around with her friends like a puppy.
My boy is the complete opposite. Normally I adopt rescue dogs, but on this occasion, due to my girl's sensitivity, I bought a puppy so there was less strain for her getting used to her new housemate. He is incredibly handsome, a bit bossy, loves everybody, and at home is my shadow. I had tentative hopes that when he was older he might help me in my work; I have not been disappointed. He is a truly loving fellow, enthusiastic to make friends but with a talent to recognise nervous dogs and support them where humans can only hope to. My shadow and absolute star!

I do not believe that what I do with the more complex or serious behaviours translates well online, and small differences and mistakes can hold back success, but some behaviours can be helped; please contact me and I will try my hardest to help. Any online session will be recorded so we can review it at a slower pace afterwards.

Keeping you and myself safe is paramount; I am 'clinically vulnerable' too! Outdoors work is no problem, as we maintain social distance at all times. All All Four Paws equipment used is sterilised after use, and antiseptic / antiviral hand wipes and gel are available for client use.
In-home work is reviewed on a case by case basis; if legally allowed, masks are work if the dog will tolerate it, distance is kept, ventilation must be maximised and, or course, laws on visiting home complied with - please call to discuss your situation.
