We pulled in just as the after-church crowd was pulling out, and were luckily seated immediately, despite the full parking lot.  The quick & dirty; this place flirted, hard, with a five star. Everything at the table (except a dessert that I felt had been sitting around a while) impressed our party of four.  T-bones for the guys were cooked perfectly, salads were crisp & fresh (their house salad would be as good as Texas Roadhouse if they added egg, that is high praise for iceberg-based salad), and sides were good all around. (Damned sysco fried okra, tho.)I had the 8oz sirloin and shrimp w/3 fried shrimp. My steak was *perfect* in every way. Smoky, cooked exactly medium-rare, and tender. Awesome. I can only imagine what the t-bones tasted like! And the fried shrimp would definitely be worth a stop of its own. Definitely fresh & hand-battered, and as I'm in Galveston a lot I am PICKY about shrimp. Their cocktail sauce was perfect, as well, with just the right amount of spice.But the real winner had to be the jalapeno marinated pork chops my Mom ordered. Amazing. The jalapeno flavor was there, without adding any spice, then grilled to perfection.Unfortunately taking a star off for cleanliness & seating four of us at a four top; yes, "technically" that should be okay, but once the rolls and teas and butter basket and plates hit the table it's a hot mess. We stopped to eat at Underwoods. After standing in line for 30 minutes, were told the credit machine was no longer working and they were only excepting Left disappointed as we were still 3 hours from home. our disappointment soon disappeared when we pulled into Humphrey Pete's. What a true gem. Cyndi our waitress was so attentive. Suggest the jalapeno pork chops which were fantastic and the T bone was great as well. It was a fun place and we will definitely be stopping in next we are going through Early/Brownwood. More...

I had the catfish and ribs.  The catfish was damn good!  I am not a "fish person" but wanted to try something different and was very pleasantly surprised.  I now wonder if any other catfish will be able to match this...  the ribs were super tender, the flavor was ok, but not on par with Famous Dave's ribs.  The vegetables seem to be the weak link here, I had corn and green beans.  Both were fine, don't get me wrong, my wife commented that they were probably just right out of the can,  there was no additional effort to make them stand out.  I can't wait to try other things here. Excellent pricing, good service, tasty food. The atmosphere is a little corny by inviting all the same. It took about five minutes for someone to greet us and get us seated but it was right around shift change (I assume as much having worked in the restaurant industry).

Steak was great, guess they fixed there smoke problem cause it wasnt bad on this visit.  Staff was attentive.  Wasnt able to sample the drinks because of a city wide outage...prob a good thing.

Service was great from the minute I walked into the door. Everyone was nice and super helpful. Came here on a recommendation from the Lake Brownwood State Park while camping. Food is great, too much for me to eat and a great value for a local joint. I ordered chicken tenders, fries and a salad. The chicken Tasted great and I would say breaded fresh. The order came with about 2lbs of tenders. The fries were wedges and cooked perfectly. The salad was large for a dinner salad and good. Trust me, traveling for work has shown me a few bad salads.Friday night $2.50 House Margarita's perfect. I also had the Creamsicle and it was awesome. As for the atmosphere makes wish I was a local. The place filled up fast and everyone knew each other and had a great time. I grew up near Boston, MA and Cheers is a place everyone knew your name. Well that is Humphrey Pete's. Everything I asked for out correct and I feel that if your food was cooked wrong they would happily remake it for you. If you are in town or near, visit you will not go wrong. More...

I will add the 4th star due to the cool interior and river view covered patio. Service is OK. Steaks could be thicker and smaller in square inches of plate space. Value is average. I had a 10 hour drive from Lubbock to Houston and this was the best steak I have ever had.  It was mouthwatering.  I believe this is the best steakhouse ever because of the taste and atmosphere.  The Waiter was awesome and they gave a lot of food.  I loved the history and the decor here.  Even Sly Stallone loved the restaurant here.  I would drive back here again and  will always remember this meal.  I have never tried a steak like that before.  I don't know your secret is but keep doing it because it could not have been any better.Sincerely yoursCraig Herring More...
