Phil is very professional, accommodating and (above all) very talented. Not only are his artistic skills perfect for my book, he is also very knowledgeable about what is and is not acceptable for book covers in the UK and USA markets.

Howell Edwards Creative Q&A

Howell Edwards Creative Q&A

What makes a great website?

A great website looks stunning, conveys important information, and provides great user experience. It works responsively across all devices and media, flawlessly, and is consistent and coherent with your brand to leave a lasting impression. We are passionate about designing and developing bespoke websites that are highly functional and user friendly, while looking beautiful across all devices and media.

What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?

The main questions we ask to start a project are:
- Who are your ideal customers?
- What are your goals for the project?
- What are your inspirations?
- What is your budget?
- What is your timescale?
- Show us what you like, and what you don't like.

Describe your creative process.

We start off with research and looking at your service areas, customer profiles, and competitors. After that, we will start the project with rough sketches and ideas. We are a two person team and we like to bounce ideas off of one another.
Once we have our ideas together, we work on a mockup of our original design to send you, before we work with you to make the design exactly what you want. We don't have a limit to the number of amends and we don't charge extra for changes - we work on a project price so we can put you, the client, first, and give you exactly what you want.

What information do you need from a client before you can start work?

We love to speak with our clients either over the phone, face to face, video call or email to get a detailed idea about them, their business and the brief for the project. We like to know what the client likes and what they don't like to build an understanding of their design taste.

What do you love most about your job?

Working with new people, learning about new businesses and what people do. We also love being creative every day and making businesses look beautiful and professional. Many of our clients have become our friends and we still work with clients we've had from our first month of business - it's really lovely.

What inspired you to start your own business?

We saw a gap in the market for a design studio that really cares and wants to make other businesses look and feel great.
We both worked for faceless, soulless big agencies in London that treated clients like a number at the top of an invoice, churning out the same template design, and we thought to ourselves - businesses deserve more than that.

Why should our clients choose you?

We formed in 2014 in the hopes of offering clients an alternative to other design companies out there; giving a personal and bespoke service that goes above and beyond the standard offering. We take pride in operating with complete honesty, transparency and integrity, so we can build long standing relationships with our clients. To do so, we only deliver completely bespoke services and products that are tailored to your business, your clients and your goals. You won’t find any templates here.

From August 2014 to present.

Last year we got to fulfil a life-long dream, and design an album cover. We were commissioned by renowned musician Dave Zoller to produce the album artwork design for Evidence: Music of Thelonious Monk, a collection of 18 pieces by a giant of jazz, spanning two CDs and three vinyl albums. Described as “an old-school labor of love”, Evidence was the culmination of nearly six decades of listening, studying, performing and loving the works of a great American pianist and composer; so there was a lot of pressure on us to design something that lived up to it! We are both huge jazz fans at Howell Edwards, so this was something of a dream job. In today’s streaming culture, it’s a great thing to produce something tangible and tactile – there really is nothing better than seeing something you’ve produced as a physical item. We love designing for print, but designing a record sleeve was a first for us. The full specification for the job included designing the front, back and inside spread of the record sleeve, including track list and liner notes, the record labels, and the CD artwork and inserts. Being commissioned to work on Evidence was an honour, and we’re thrilled with the result. If you’re looking to commission album or record artwork, we would absolutely love to hear more. “Howell Edwards Creative designed materials for EVIDENCE: MUSIC OF THELONIOUS MONK, a jazz album that I produced in 2017, including a gatefold triple album cover, a double CD, coasters, and a poster. Not only did they take my notes and really pay attention to them, they took everything to a new level. The result was as classical as I'd imagined but also stirringly modern, in ways that connected with the music, which they actually listened to and thought about. Their prices were quite reasonable, they were easy to work with, and they did all sorts of little things that were surprising in a good way. I'll be working with them again for sure.” Matthew Seitz Producer of Evidence

We have had the pleasure of working with bespoke blind and curtain craftsmen Tidmarsh Blinds over the past year, to redesign and develop their company website. This was an exciting challenge for us, as we hadn’t previously worked with such a historic and long-established company, and it was very important to us to incorporate this into the new site design, while also maintaining the clean and modern style that we are known for. Website design for SEO results is something that we are very passionate about, and it’s been wonderful to see such great results with Tidmarsh. The previous Tidmarsh website wasn’t working for them as a business; it didn’t convey the incredible quality that they bestow in their products, as well as the many decades and generations of knowledge and experience that have gone into their craft. We redesigned the entire site from scratch, taking it back to what the company is about – the blinds, their history, and their future. One of the major flaws of the previous site was a confusing navigation – we know that an accessible site structure and an easy to navigate website is crucial to both great user experience and great search result rankings, so this was something we wanted to address immediately. We stripped the site down to provide an entry way for the different types of customer and clients that visit the site, and took the design back to the recognisable company branding; making the site brighter, more user friendly and all round more useable – a key measure in website design for SEO. We designed infographics to illustrate their incredible company history, their crafting process, and photographed each member of the Tidmarsh team for their “Meet the Team” page to add a personal feel to the site. We developed everything to be fully responsive; we know that up to one third of their visitors are viewing the site on mobile, so it’s essential their experience is just as good as a desktop user. One of the major targets we had for the new site was to speed up page loading times across all platforms, and we concentrated on optimising images and scripts across each page to achieve this successfully. The site now has a refreshed and simplified look, complete with enhanced content fully optimised for every media device, desktop through mobile. This allows customers to view product details, company information, request a quote and contact Tidmarsh through the site. The CMS allows the client to observe visitor and customer analytics, so they can feed this information back into offering the service that their customers are looking for. We fully designed and developed the site using WordPress, concentrating on accessibility and responsive design to give an inclusive and interactive user experience. The SEO results from our new design, development and content writing have been very successful. We’re so happy that we’ve developed a strong relationship with Tidmarsh, and are thoroughly enjoying our weekly content writing, social media management and web maintenance for them. If you’re interested in having a website that ranks well and looks great, please get in touch to see how we can help.

There is something really wonderful about seeing your illustrations and designs as a tangible, tactile object; so when Whosits & Whatsits asked if we wanted to design a T-Shirt for their Halloween collection, we jumped at the chance. Whosits & Whatsits produce and sell apparel and homeware inspired by childhood stories, aimed at theme park fans that refuse to grow up. We were commissioned by Whosits & Whatsits to design a T-Shirt illustration inspired by Disney’s Haunted Mansion, our favourite ride at the parks. We chose to illustrate Madame Leota, one of the main characters and ghosts seen throughout the ride. She is seen as the spirit of a psychic medium, conducting an otherworldly séance in an attempt to summon spirits and assist them in materialising. Her ghostly head appears on a table in the middle of her dark chamber, from which she speaks her incantations. It’s one of our favourite parts of the ride, so it seemed only right that she take pride of place in our design. We illustrated our vision of her in a vintage, tattoo inspired style, which suits the style of Whosits & Whatsits perfectly. The shading and toned down blue, cold colours add to the spooky feel, matching the whole theme of both the ride and the Halloween range of clothes. We’re so happy with the result, it looks great as an illustration but even better on a real t-shirt as shown in the photoshoot photographs below. If you’re looking for t-shirt illustration for your clothing designs, we would love to hear from you.

We love illustrating books, especially when they’re colourful, meaningful children’s books that allow us to work in our different styles. We recently worked with author Diane Mitchell on three children’s books that she has written for self-publication. The children’s illustration style that Diane was looking for for her books was a much looser, more “hand-written” style than we generally work in, so it was a great challenge for us and a wonderful set of projects to work on. Nannie’s Book of Nursery Rhymes is a colourful children’s book full of nursery rhymes collected by Diane over a lifetime. It’s a fun, gentle picture book that is full of lovely illustrations of the stories, including everything from a fairy to a junebag. The illustrations were a lot of fun for us to work on, they’re all very colourful, detailed and lively. We worked in a different style to our usual digital, vector illustration on these books for Diane, which was an exciting challenge for us. They allowed us to be more free with our drawing style and technique, and as a result the images have a more textured and tangible feel to them – despite also being made as digital media. We’ve loved working on these books with Diane, and we would love to work on more children’s illustration books in this hand-drawn style. If you’re looking for illustration for your children’s book, we would love to hear from you. “Very helpful and his illustrations were just what I asked for, very happy and would highly recommend Mr Howell. He has a fantastic imagination and is very efficient and good to work with.” Diane Mitchell Author

We are always excited to work on branding and packaging designs for food and drink companies, especially when free tasters are involved! We love designing everything from the logo, business cards, and fully responsive e-commerce website, through to coffee and tea labels and packaging, and café menus and calendars. We were commissioned by new Coffee & Tea Label and Café Leafy Bean Company to design their entire branding and visual identity. We began by designing a logo that was a play on the owner and founder Laura Monk’s nickname, with variants that could be used across all types of marketing and promotional ephemera. We designed and artworked menus for the drinks and food offerings in the café, produced flyers for distributing amongst the local area, as well as loyalty and discount cards for regular customers. We then designed and produced the packaging labels for their own brand Tea collection, aligning with the appropriate health and safety governing body’s rules and regulations. These packaging designs incorporated the Leafy Bean Company branding, ensuring that all their products and packagings were coherent and cohesive. Of course, once the products were produced, a digital platform for selling was required, so we then designed and developed a fully responsive e-commerce platform for Laura to sell her wares online. The website, as well as selling tea and coffee, works as an online calendar for the events and exhibitions that the physical shop put on. We’ve loved working with Laura and the team at Leafy Bean Company, and both of us can attest that their branded Coffees and Teas are absolutely delicious! If you’re looking for designers for your branding, your food or drink packaging designs, or your e-commerce website development, we would love to hear from you.
