Excellent Christmas lunch

Finally taking the time at year end to let the Tresanton staff know what a fabulous few nights we spent there in late May/early June for my "Big-0" Birthday. The rooms/views are stunning, and the service couldn't have been better. Likewise for the restaurant; for breakfast, lunch & especially cocktails and dinner. One of the highlights of our three-week trip was our afternoon sail on the one-and-only Pinuccia - a true gem! The skipper and his mate were fun and knowledgable. Can't wait to come back! More...

We recently had a couple of nights here and enjoyed the outlook from our room , which was well furnished with an adequate bathroom and balcony overlooking the sea. ||||All the meals served in the restaurant were of a good standard with good service .||||Now, this is not a cheap stay and I would agree with some other TA reviews that the property does have a few areas of wear and tear which is showing in a few ares but the standard is still high.||||My main criticism comes from noise in the late evening and early morning (5.50am) possibly from staff (room 5) but although this is a nice room with balcony may not be suitable for lite sleepers! This rather spoiling an otherwise pleasant stay. More than two nights we would have asked to move. More...

A surprise birthday treat. Not the cheapest places to stay but you pay for what you get and what we got was excellence. A beautiful room (5) and a beautiful evening meal followed a wonderful breakfast. Fortunately the sun came out for a short while for us to really appreciate the beauty of the hotel and St Mawes. Spent a night at the hotel, pleasant however showing signs of wear and tear. Check out the stairway carpet, also guard rails to the roof garden did not look as if they had seen a coat of varnish for years, likewise the outdoor furniture. A good pressure washer and varnish badly needed. In our room two pictures on the wall 70% covered by the TV, looks most odd.Windows impossible to open. Tables very near to each other in the Dining room. On the evening of us having dinner all guests were placed next to each other despite the dining room being only 50% full. Staff are rather brash. The store/staff room door on the first floor was always open and you could see clothing hanging up. More...

My wife and I have just returned from Hotel Tresanton, I am so pleased to say the whole experience of staying there has not changed a massive amount, from the vallet parking to the lovely smilie faces at reception. |The food is still a gourmet treat for anyone. |Dont forget St Mawes itself of course, it is the most relaxing place to unwind.|Thank you to all the staff for a lovely holiday. This place was as good as I expected. We have eaten lunch here a few times beforehand and wanted to see if the rest of the experience was as good - it was. We were there in a dog friendly room which was great for us (and our dog). The only thing that was slightly less than perfect was the choice of place to eat in the evening - as it was too cold and damp to use the terrace. We had to eat in one of the bars which was less than ideal. With a bit of effort then could let us use the first table in the restaurant or set up a covered and heated area on the terrace - it would be simple to do! More...

I loved my stay at the tresanton. Staff were friendly and accommodating. The hotel itself is beautifully situated taking in expansive views of the harbour. It was lovely to sit with drink in hand and watch the local yacht racing.||My own room ( maybe 10) appeared to be the top level of a row of refurbished terraces, it had amazing views but it came at the cost of a number of flights of stairs. Not a problem for me but something to check if you have mobility issues. More...

We returned to St Mawes and the Tresanton after a break of about ten years. Having stayed there several times in the early years of the hotel’s existence, it was a joy to be back and to discover that it is better than ever. Our room was lovely and so comfortable (such understated good taste) and the staff so friendly and professional. We had some really delicious meals in the lovely dining room. The new beach club is a good addition, although it was underused when we were there in early August. We have already booked a room for next year! More...

Wow we had a really lovely stay at the Tresanton. My husband and I are passionate about great food and great stays. We always find it a challenge to find a hotel that can meet our expectations which is doggie friendly. We have put off a holiday with our cocker spaniel Poppy for a while because we are sceptical of the experience some doggie friendly hotel offers. After all when we go on holiday, we spend a huge amount of time in the hotel away from the city of London to relax and enjoy the experience and service so food and the room are critical to our selection criteria. ||Food - The breakfast is great. Simple buffet bar serving fresh berries, tasty granola muesli and pastries and you can order from the hot breakfast menu. We enjoyed breakfast in amazing sea view on the restaurant terrace with Poppy on a daily basis. The Sunday BBQ was amazing with fresh seafood and grills. Juicy, plum oysters, fresh prawns and lovely meat cuts - it’s all about the best of Cornwall. ||Room - it is amazing how much of a difference having the sea view. We wake up every morning listening to the waves and the faint chatters of the the morning swimmers. ||Relaxation - great thing is the area is not crowded and really touristy like the Padstow town. We took the dog out for our morning jogs, relax at the beach club and finish with an evening walk with the dog again before venturing other fine dining and great restaurants locally and round Cornwall. There are also plenty of great outdoor walks. ||Bar - we finish our daily routine having a night cap at the bar we can bring our dog with us. We met lots of other travels from all round the world. Met a Swedish American couple who have been to hotel on an annual basis for the past ten years.||Pinnuccia - if you like the sea, would recommend get a trip on the Pinnuccia to explore the Fal river and the local sea area. Lovely boat. More...

I haven't been there for about a year as we've been really busy and my goodness were we impressed by the new terraces. For a few hours we were transported to The Amalfi Coast. We lay on the second terrace with 4 other guests who were all staying at the hotel plus their dog. All of which chatted with us and made us feel like we were in fact holidaying too. All of us fully clothed yet behaving like we were right on the edge of the beach in our swimwear. It was utterly fantastic. Clean, nice nibbles, good service and the most beautiful of uninterrupted views. I came home to the same stress of too work to think straight and my daughter still has to go back to school but we certainly faced the music much better after our mini holiday. You are great Tresanton and goodness do you understand what luxury REALLY means., Thank you for a moment of tranquillity. More...

We stayed for two nights - a birthday treat for me from my husband, who had not been to Cornwall before. The hotel is stylishly decorated, but has a relaxing atmosphere. Our room was comfortable and had views of St. Mawes Bay and beyond. To my dismay, there was no safe in our room, so I carried my valuables around with me for two days. Breakfast is very tasty and on the second morning, we were able to eat outside on the beautiful terrace overlooking the ocean. We had dinner at the hotel on both nights. The meals were excellent and service very good. Slightly disappointed about the high food and drinks prices - I was interested the scallops starter for €22, but when I asked how many scallops would be served, the answer was 'two', which, for a seaside town, seems more than excessive. The beach club consists of three narrow strips of terraces built into the rocks with fantastic views of the ocean. St. Mawes is a quiet little town and seems to have escaped over-tourism. More...

Hotel overall well maintained. Housekeeping is excellent and very attentive (room was always made-up while we were at breakfast; and turned down when we were at dinner; never got disturbed by housekeeping). It is a old house and thus expect to hear what is going on in the rooms above, below and next to you (or if your room overlooks the restaurant you will hear noice from there)...did not bother us as we are used to live in old houses and our neighbors were all "well behaved").Also there is no air condition.||Beautiful location overlooking St Mawes bay/harbor.||Hotel has its own classic sailing yacht (1930s) that you can rent with a skipper for day/half-day trips.||Food and bar service is good and attentive; food quality is good.||Prices are high...hotel needs to be careful not to rest on its laurels. It would be nice if there would be a regular (i.e daily) information to guests what is going on in the area and what is recommended to do (i.e. during the week we were there it was Falmouth week with lots of activities but no information at the hotel about it; there were also other activities int he areas like fairs etc ... but you need to find things yourselves). We spent 6 days at Hotel Tresanton to celebrate our wedding anniversary and have to say it was absolutely first class. The room, service, breakfast and dinner were all excellent. Our room, 5, was very comfortable and it was lovely to sit on the balcony watching the boats go by and generally taking in the view. We also booked the hotel boat, Pinuccia, for the day and what a delight that was. The skipper and his crew were really nice chaps and allowed my husband to sail her for a while and they used their local knowledge to decide where to sail at what point during the day. We decided to stay in Tresanton as it had such a good deal - stay 2 nights - 3rd night for free! The suite was very spacious and has such lovely view over the sea. Bath room was over the top with separate shower room and huge bath tube! Very sweet and surprising thing is that you had to ask for the tea & coffee tray if you want them! Fresh fruits served in the room every day! There is DVD player as well so you can borrow CD downstairs by the receptionist and spend some time in bed to watch some good films! We definitely will come back (if they have some good deals haha!!) More...

Just divine, on every level. Even in the middle of winter - we came for 3 nights as a couple with our large golden doodle, between Christmas and New Year. All rooms look out onto the bay, what a view to wake up to! Some of the dog friendly rooms are just above the "dog bar", a cosy, nautical-themed room and a little bar where you can enjoy the restaurant menu, play board games or just have a drink. All the staff are very friendly, attentive - service is top notch. The hotel is not cheap, but as such, everything is included - the multiple double macchiatos my husband enjoyed at breakfast every morning, that so often are extra anywhere else. The food is fresh, seasonal, beautifully presented and right-sized. Tresanton has a rather unique, homely, family feel. Staying there is like a few days away at a very well-heeled, kindly friend. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Although full, it never felt over crowded; there are multiple nooks and crannies to simply relax, disconnect with the world and reacquaint yourself with your loved ones. Our golden doodle, Maggie, was welcomed. There are countless walks, along the coast or across the fields. The village of St Mawes is charming, with a nice (dog friendly) pub and some good food - thoroughly recommend the Watch House. There are so many things to do and places to visit in the surrounding area - I am already planning a return stay, hopefully with our daughters, not just the dog! Truly one of my favourite holidays. Absolutely enjoyed our 3 day stay and would have loved to extend it if we could. Tucked away in a corner of St. Mawes, it is a stylish hotel with luxurious rooms. Our suite in the Upper Tresanton building came with a balcony which offered fab views of the water. Please do note it is quite a climb from the main building - but the porters are strong and will help you bring up your luggage - major plus! The climb is worth it, though. The staff are fab, friendly and are quick to attend to all needs. We asked for advice regarding driving down to Newquay and they were able to give suggestions. Breakfast offerings were good, as was the dinner which we reserved. I loved the crab tian starter! Should have gotten the recipe. Would highly recommend as a great destination and getaway for couples. Worth the drive from London! More...

We spent six nights at this beautiful hotel, ate all of our dinners there and enjoyed it very much. We had a large room (#6) with a small writing alcove (complete with library of all kinds of books) and a spacious private terrace overlooking the port. Large comfortable bed with lovely linens, large bright bathroom with tub and walk-in shower. Food was fantastic - very fresh fish, delicious salads, a terrific bar with two friendly bartenders; can eat outside when the weather is nice (and they have outside heaters, plus blankets, if it’s cool). A minor issue - the wait staff in the restaurant are young and sometimes unfocused; it seemed like the dining room needed a stronger manager. But we would still give this hotel a very high rating and we would definitely come back. Very good value for the cost, as well. More...

My wife and I stayed at this hotel at the end of a 10 day walking trip from Padstow to Penzance in Cornwall. We were looking for a little luxury to relax in for a couple of days before moving on and had booked this hotel. In a word, it is superb. The service is outstanding (room service in one minute or less for morning coffee, for example), bathrooms are luxurious with plush towels and crisp white sheets, most rooms have a view straight out to sea (the hotel is essentially built into a cliff). The town of Saint Mawes is itself very pretty, although small. An intact Tudor castle guarding the harbor is a few steps away and worth a look. When the weather is good, a 20 minute ferry ride embarking a few steps away from the hotel takes you to Falmouth, which has a lot more going on for a day trip. Unfortunately for us, the weather did not cooperate (hard rain and windy) so we found ourselves “stuck” for two nights in this wonderful peaceful hotel. Life could be far worse. The restaurant is also quite good, although a bit bland and in that sense only not quite up to the high standards of a Rick Stein restaurant or the rest of the hotel. All in all, however, a very well run and very lovely hotel. More...

We stayed 3 nights at the Trenton and loved every minute at the hotel. We had a fabulous room which was located next door to the main house and which was larger and more modern than one expects in England. The service was outstanding, handling every request we made before arrival and once we were at the hotel. The roads to and from the hotel are a bit tricky, especially for an American driver having to negotiate driving on the "wrong" side of the very narrow roads so when our first dinner was outstanding, we decided to eat the remaining dinners in the hotel. The menu changed daily and we were pleased each night. We had cocktails in the lounge and they took our orders while we waited, like an English guesthouse, which was a very nice touch. We would certainly recommend this resort as an excellent spot to use to explore Cornwall. More...

I can't remember the last time I stayed in a hotel in England that wasn't for a work trip. I'd forgotten what a lovely experience a stay can be in the right hotel. I was here for two nights and would have been quite happy staying in the hotel all day (and all evening) with a good book, the paper and my iPad! Snug and comfy with wonderful service, the staff are courteous and attentive but not overly so. The beach club wasn't open during the time I was there so I can't comment on it but I can say that the food and atmosphere in the restaurant and the Dog Bar were first-class. The restaurant is busy however - I agree with the reviewer who feels that a lot of the tables get filled up by outside bookings - and if you want dinner, I would advise to book at the same time as you book your room. Breakfast was lovely as well; there was a lovely hot menu to choose from, ranging from pancakes to kippers to a ham and cheese toastie with fried egg, as well as a selection of fruit, cereals and continental pastries. The town is charming although I didn't quite have enough time to really experience it. But I did brave the September weather to go for an early dip in the sea (the hotel is just above the beach). It was pretty great. This was just a quick getaway and to be honest, I wasn't expecting my stay to be as relaxing and cosy as it was and I left wishing I'd booked myself in for one more night. I would definitely return. Highly recommended. More...

I knew I'd love my very first English seaside holiday and I did. At the heart of my enjoyment of Cornwall was the Tresanton Hotel, which, over the course of 5 days, lulled my stress-prone, city-slicking person into something with the consistency of putty. I was breathless upon arrival, partly a result of the staircase leading up to reception, partly the result of catching that first vista over the bay with Saint Anthony's lighthouse in the distance, sun glinting off the sea and little white sailboats dotting azure waters. I could easily write a paean about how lovely my time at the Tresanton was but here are the most important points: it's in the details, like Lefroy Brooks taps, Missoni blankets, and Mitchell + Peach bath products. The food is just exquisite - simple, quality sourcing, Italian inflections on British produce; I honestly looked forward to every meal. Breakfast set the standard for what my ideal hotel breakfast looks like, and on the last day, we went fishing in the morning and they cooked the mackerel we caught for our lunch, grilled simply with a tomato salad side - I exercise no hyperbole when I say that it was one of the most memorable meals of my life. Service was faultless, personable, etc. I could go on! I definitely plan on returning next summer. More...

What a treat! My husband and I spent a week in Cornwall at this wonderful hotel. First of all, the location can't be beat. Our room had an amazing view of the water and the sunsets were breathtaking. The hotel is an easy, short walk to the town, which is full of charm, wonderful pubs, restaurants, and shopping. The hotel itself is lovely. Our room was beautifully appointed with a comfortable bed, beautiful decor, and an upscale bathroom. The service was unparalleled. We stayed here for two nights last weekend to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We had a lovely stay. The hotel is superbly located with beautiful views over the bay. Our room (number 5) was delightful, with its own terrace and outdoor furniture – such a shame the weather wasn't better so we could enjoy this more, but that's hardly the fault of the hotel! All the hotel's staff were friendly and helpful and, as other reviewers have commented, ensure that this special hotel isn't 'hushed' or 'stuffy' in the slightest. A complimentary glass of prosecco each to celebrate our anniversary was nice touch. The lounge, with log fire burning in June (told you the weather wasn't very good!) is perfect for drinks before dinner and the dining room itself is lovely, light and airy. We ate here on one of our two nights, and enjoyed it, though in truth we expected the food to be better – our meals were perfectly good, rather than superb. Breakfast, in the same room, was very good with plenty of choice and quality ingredients. But by far the highlight of our stay was our half-day sail on the hotel's yacht, Pinuccia, which I'd booked as a surprise for my wife. We're not sailors, but we had a fantastic time, despite the wind and rain. Many thanks to skipper Mark and mate Jan for this wonderful experience! More...

10 years ago we came with our family. 4 children, daughters in law and a few grandchildren.|None of us will ever forget sitting on the Tresanton deck, having dinner on glorious evenings looking at a huge blood red Mars and overlooking the inlet filled with so many sailing yachts at anchor. It was just glorious.|Now 10 years later my wife and I decided to Re-visit this wonderful establishment. Guess what! It’s better than ever.|Where to start. The staff. So attentive without being intrusive. |The food superb and the right side of being poncy, messed about with, over decorated. The food relies on superb ingredients prepared by exceptional kitchen staff who very clearly know what they are doing.||The rooms are spacious, beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable, with huge bathrooms with both bath and shower||The new Beach Club terraces are perfect for just chilling and watching the beach and sea activity whilst nursing a lovely cooling cocktail.||Why does this gorgeous hotel work so well? That’s easy to answer. Well trained staff who want to make sure that every guest has a wonderful experience at the hotel. Attention to detail by making sure that every element of the hotel is just right and, most importantly, the constant presence of Alex Polizzi, who oversees everything. Often showing guests to their table, clearing tables and chatting to guests. Her understanding of the word ‘Hospitality’ is a theme that runs through every aspect of this wonderful establishment. ||10 years on we now have 4 children, all married and 9 grandchildren. We have visited the Tresanton many times and this year was the first chance we had to visit the new beach club which was opened last year. We were so looking forward to seeing and experiencing the beach club for the first time and when we were able to on our most recent visit in September 2018 we decided to order a cream tea. However we were shocked when we were served our food with single use plastic cutlery. With all the talk of single use plastic contaminating and poisioning the sea, surely the Tresanton could use wooden or bamboo knives and forks such as that used at the Lost Gardens of Heligan. It seems obscene that such a magical hotel that is renowned for its sea views and based next to the sea, should open a beach club with such wonderful views over St Mawes bay and beyond that they could not contemplate using a product that could contribute to to this terrible problem. Although this will not solve the world wide issue of plastic use, we all have to take responsibility and do our bit to help. More...

This was our first visit to Tresanton and we had just had 4 wonderful nights at the sister hotel in Devon. ||On arrival at the car park a quick call to the hotel had our bags collected by the porters and delivered to our room. |There is a small drop of area outside the front of the hotel where you can pull in but it was full when we arrived. |From the drop off the hotel will then take your bags and concierge park your car. If you are unsteady on your feet this is the only option as the walk down from the main car park is 100 odd steep steps. |The rooms are comfortable, ours had a large double shower but no bath. The view looked out over the estuary and faced south.| |The resturant staff are efficient and courteous but in the whole lacked personality and seemed rushed. If the hotel is busy the resturant is a squeeze as there isn’t much room between tables. When someone gets up from the table next to you they squeeze between the tables and you feel like their bottom is in your face!||On one night We tried to book the resturant after being out all day and were told it was full till 21:30. |After a discussion with the kitchen they said if we came down at 19:30 they would try and squeeze us in, when I’m paying the rates at this hotel I don’t expect to be squeezed in...... it would be a good idea if the breakfast restaurant team asked guests if they require a table for dinner so it can be booked then ( as Endsleigh do). I think due to its location the restaurant gets a lot of outside bookings making it hard for residents to get a short notice table. ||In the end we ate in the Dog bar which was a lot more open and relaxed. The staff in their were a lot more chatty also ( probably because they weren’t rushed). ||Front of house staff are what you would expect, pleasant, courteous and chatty. ||The beach club is nice, it’s just across the road from the hotel, there are loungers and tables on a terrace with a small hut serving light bites and drinks. |This is also open to the public so beware... there was a foul mouthed loud person on the upper terrace, once again not what I’d expect at this level of hotel. It should be restricted to guests only. ||If you do get a chance, book to go out on Pinuccia, their wonderful 1938 Italian racing yacht. Mark and Yan ( Skipper and crewman) are great and we had 3 wonderful hours chasing the wind. ||Don’t get this wrong it’s a good hotel but if it wants to be the best there is simple things they can do to improve.| |Will we go back, not sure but I’ve already booked to return to their sister hotel ( Hotel Endsleigh). This was our 7th or 8th visit to Tresanton, so we are obviously fans. We can only praise all the staff for having a smile on their faces (all the time) and offering genuinely first rate service. We have stayed in many top hotels over the years but never experienced hospitality and service as good as Tresanton. Friends joined us for a few days this year and were delighted to find it as good as we had said!||We’ve seen a rolling programme of updating and renovation over the years, which ensures the impeccable home from home atmosphere is maintained and actually gets better.||We’ve always been lucky with the weather, but this years Mediterranean sunshine was as good as it gets, so the beach club was a welcome addition.||For the first time we treated ourselves to a half day on the hotels 80 year old, 8m Italian racing yacht, Pinuccia. We spent five nights at the Tresanton did the whole thing. We stayed in the Forte Suite, sailed on hotel yacht, and ate in every night except one at the hotel. It was marvellous, expensive but marvellous. The only negative were the many steps which to be fair we were pre-warned about by the hotel. We loved the fact that there was no muzak played in hotel and you can hear the elements and the seagulls. As a 65th birthday treat, I was given a voucher for afternoon tea for two at Hotel Tresanton. We waited for a sunny day after the summer rush and yesterday was that day. We couldn’t have asked for more glorious weather and with the restaurant balcony overlooking St Mawes harbour it was a perfect setting for afternoon tea. The sea was calm and the sun was shimmering on the water.||We treated ourselves to some Bollicine Sparkling Rose to start and then the afternoon tea selection. There were crab and cucumber and smoked salmon sandwiches, 4 scones with clotted cream and jam, carrot cake, chocolate cake, macaroons and what I could describe as Florentines. My wife had tea and I had an excellent coffee. The waiter also provided a glass carafe of water.||It was absolutely delicious. We couldn’t manage it all, so the waitress boxed up some of the cake for us to take away with us.||What we love about the The Tresanton, apart from the glorious setting, is the staff. They are calm, friendly, helpful and accommodating. It is always a pleasure and a treat for us to pop into The Tresanton. We are now looking forward to my wife’s birthday! More...

This is a lovely hotel in a great spot and all the staff were excellent. My only issue is around overall value. We paid £675 for a one night “celebration package,” which included afternoon tea, some flowers, a bottle of champagne and dinner. For that price, I think tea should be more than two scones each, the flowers should be better than a selection of wild foxgloves and as someone else has noted, I’d have liked to have seen some crab in the crab salad starter! No reason not to go, but possibly a reason not to go twice! More...

Full disclosure: I stayed for free as I was delivering a talk at the hotel. Hotel Tresanton is in St Mawes which, I'm assuming anyone who is looking for somewhere to stay here already knows, is beautiful. My room overlooked the bay, and given that the hotel is built on a steeply inclined hill, I'm assuming that all the other rooms do too. The bed was enormous and the room was a very good size too, and well appointed with everything you might need (except a bath, though the shower was roomy and luxurious). Upon arrival I parked my car in front of the hotel, on double yellow lines. This made me uncomfortable but was the only option. Walking up stairs to the reception (this is categorically NOT a suitable place for anybody with mobility problems) I was met with smiles and a man who helped me cart my luggage up to my room, and parked my car for me (I didn't see where, but apparently it's an arduous climb up to the car park). There's a lounge area in the hotel with a large open fire and comfortable seating - armchairs and sofas. Staff are pleasant and professional, and made me feel at home. The meal that was provided as part of the talk was delicious: if this was in any way representative of the fayre available for evening diners then it really is something else. The full English breakfast was as expected for hotels at the pricier end of my experience - small portions but ingredients of noticeable quality. No baked beans, though, so can this really count as a _full_ English? Departure was smooth and staff were as helpful as they were on arrival, just in the opposite direction. I'd happily stay here again, if only I could afford it! More...
