As winter approached, we experienced one of every homeowner’s biggest frustrations: a broken boiler. We contacted Holdcroft Heating & Gas and the same day, Matt visited and diagnosed the fault owing to a failure in the pump and advised that the printed circuit board within the boiler may too soon fail. They estimated a cost of ~£185 and ~£700 respectively. We paid the callout charge of £50.Prior to this, my partner and I had discussed replacing the boiler albeit later. Our initial plan was to replace the pump and hope it lasted until the new year. Upon their second visit Matt, whilst willing to install the pump, strongly insisted we reassessed having a new boiler installed as he wasn’t confident that a new pump alone would last beyond a week, let alone a few months. After some deliberation, my partner and I agreed to simply replace the boiler now as we intended to anyway. They kindly discarded any callout charge, were grateful we heeded their advice and we instead spent the pump’s value of £185 on a few portable radiators in the interim.We believed that this was the best option as although it would objectively be more expensive, it was a long-term solution. Additionally, the work we wanted would require some carpets being lifted which we were close to replacing and would’ve been upset if we had paid for new flooring to be fitted, only for it to be removed and fitted again.We initially booked for Mark to visit on the Friday though learned later in the afternoon he wouldn’t be able to attend the property but would visit between 9:00am and 11:00am the following Monday. Although disappointing, Mark did attend the property promptly as promised on the Monday.We settled on converting a condensing boiler to a combi boiler, moving the boiler to the airing cupboard and installing NEST with additional work, such as bricking and plastering and a system flush at a price not dissimilar to other quotes we received.There were a few reasons we chose Holdcroft Heating and Gas over their competitors. The dialogue we exchanged between Matt & Mark was brilliant: they clearly presented themselves as capable, knowledgeable, no-nonsense engineers. A close family relative had also used the business recently and was very satisfied with their work. Furthermore, we did appreciate their advice and little gestures such as fee-waiving for the second callout do go a long way. We were also pleased to learn that the business didn’t expect any remuneration until the work was complete.We understand that Murphy’s Law, “anything that can go wrong, will go wrong at the worst possible moment” applies to everyone and that heating engineers are notoriously busy during the winter months but were happy to wait 20 days from accepting the quote to installation.Lee and Todd arrived on the day to conduct the work. Both were fantastic and consistent with the reputation they’d built with my partner and I as being, to repeat: capable, knowledgeable, no-nonsense engineers. I was able to be in the house the first of a two-day job as both engineers promptly began work only interrupted by clarifying a few queries with me. Although family was able to be present the second day to allow the engineers access to the property, we would not have hesitated in trusting the engineers with the keys in their absence. My partner, family and I were particularly impressed with the quality of the installation and their diligence in ensuring our safety with respect to any possible leaks.We would recommend Holdcroft Heating & Gas to anyone wanting a new boiler installed and will unquestionably use their services in the future for any other work we require. We discovered Holdcroft Heating after becoming ever more disillusioned with the other four companies that we had been in contact with for quotes to replace our ageing gas boiler. Disillusioned because they didn't reply, were inconsistent in their recommendations of what required doing, which capacity and type of boiler we required, or they quoted prices which were excessive, or wildly different from those being shown on their websites.In desperation we went back to the drawing board, and following further searches on Google and the Worcester Bosch website we decided to give Holdcroft a call. From the initial call through to the installation yesterday could not have been more professional. An appointment was made for Mark, the Assessor, to visit us the day after we called. He arrived on time and quickly set about understanding our requirements and assessing what was best for our situation. This included a number of methodical checks, including calculating the correct boiler size for our house size and situation. He had a piece of software to help with this calculation. NON of the other companies that we had approached went into this level of detail. The net result is that he concluded that the boiler size recommended by a number of the other companies was overkill for our application. We were so impressed with his professionalism (and quotation) that we instructed him straightaway to go ahead with the installation. Based on previous experience we expected to be waiting weeks for this to happen, but no, he informed us that he could juggle his diary and slot us in less than a week after he gave us the quote. The three installers arrived early (9am) and promptly yesterday and quickly set about their business. Starting first with protecting the flooring in the various rooms that they would be working in. This included putting protectors on their boots every time they entered the house. They then went about their business; one working in the garage to install the boiler, the other two attending to the jobs inside. By early afternoon they were finished, leaving the electrician to install the Nest smart heating controls and to carry out the final electrical checks. Before leaving they tidied up everywhere to the point that other then the empty coffee cups, we didn't know they had been. A further nice touch, which speaks volumes for the way they do business, is that Mark will be visiting us next week to carry out a final quality check and to make sure that we are happy with the installation and to address any questions that we might have regarding the operation.I am a stickler when it comes to tradesmen and to having work done in our house, and I have to say that Holdcroft could not be faulted on ANY count. Brilliant caring local company. Both my daughter and myself have had a new combi boiler, and I also had new radiators. Mark came out yo survey, explain and price. Had my normal council annual check done, the first engineer was excellent and knowledgeable at what he does. Had to have more work done so he was really apologetic. When I had a call from the office to arrange it the lady I spoke to was so pleasant and polite and nothing was too much trouble. She had an engineer back out within the hour to get my supply back on. Excellent prompt service. Mark 's quote was competitive to others we received and it also included a higher spec boiler than others quoted for. A date was agreed, the team arrived and stripped out our old boiler, immersion heater and pipework, installed the new boiler in the loft and piped in as needed. The weather was terrible and the outside brickwork couldnt be completed however they came back the next day and finished off.
