Absolutely amazing place . Transported back to the 1940s Authentic furnishings music. Coal fires. Great friendly approachable staff. Fabulous food we had breakfast daily and evening meal there twice ..just yummy. Room lovely clean fresh bright and spacious, albeit a wee bit cooler in our room after being downstairs at times even with 2 radiatorsin the room. Fresh towels every day tea coffee etc topped up daily house keeping daily if required. Thoroughly enjoyed this hotel and will be returning. Now...let's talk about the outside..wowee its breathtaking .. the views, the reservoir just made me never wanting to leave. The quiet undisturbed areas are gorgeous. Conservation is in place, making the whole experience wonderful from start to finish...(a full 6.5 hrs actually lol )(novice beginner walker) Walked the whole way around Haweswater Reservoir. Quite an achievement but something we wanting to do again. Highly recommend More...

Stopped in here after a visit to Haweswater in November, if you want secluded this is the hotel to stay at. Haweswater is stunning and well worth the drive to get to. We stopped for a tea and a beer in the restaurant, I loved the deco, like a French Bistro and the views over the water simply stunning. Plan to come back and stay one night too! More...

Lovely stay here in this charactorful guest house overlooking the lake. There was a problem with the heating on the weekend we stayed. However the roaring fires in the bar and lounge and the plug in heater in our room did keep us warm enough. We did receive a discount for the inconvenience. I love the 1930s decor and the staff were lovely as was the food. It's nice to stay somewhere that warmly welcomes dogs too. More...

Just back from our son’s wedding at the Haweswater Hotel and what an amazing experience we had, it was faultless. We spent the weekend celebrating and the staff could not have done any more to make our stay perfect. The hotel is secluded and charming and you can’t fail to fall in love with the whole package. The rooms are lovely with lots of retro features and so welcoming and cosy.||||We arrived on the Friday, then all the guests arrived on Saturday and the wedding was on Sunday. The staff made sure everything was perfect for the whole weekend, from the breakfasts which were beautiful with a great choice and the evening meals which were so delicious. I must mention the chef who did a superb job of keeping us all extremely well catered for, thank you.||||On the day of the wedding the staff were on hand to help with anything we needed and clearly passionate about working at the Haweswater. The menu chosen by the grooms for the wedding day meal was really superb and the service flawless.||||Thank you to John and his team of staff for making the weekend so special for us all. More...

This place is a gem, perched above the reservoir at Haweswater in one of the most peaceful settings I have ever stayed in, the hotel is second to none. We booked an accessible room to accommodate the wheelchair, and what a good move this was. We don’t always do that, we just make sure we have access to a room, IE ground floor, or a lift available. This sounded to good to be true, so we tried it, and it was. We are used to travelling with a wheelchair and also used to the fact that not all places are adapted for them. The only downside here was the slightly uneven path at the front of the hotel, but bearing in mind it’s an old building and wasn’t built to cater for wheelchairs, this wasn’t a problem. Access to the room was brilliant as was access to the main body of the hotel. The hotel was built, I think, in 1937, when the reservoir was created. It does need bits doing here and there, but what old building doesn’t, there were no major faults at all. The staff were brilliant, I didn’t get any names, but you know who you are. The manager on duty was great with his local knowledge and advice, as was the Polish lady who helped us out no end, despite her piromanical tendencies, she keeps a very good open fire in the bar. The restaurant was superb, the food was mouth-wateringly excellent, both breakfast and evening dinner. I loved the fact breakfast was cooked to order, and not sat in trays on the usual buffet bar you get at a lot of hotels. Thank you all at the hotel. More...

Stayed at the Haweswater Hotel last week for a nights stop-off on the way to Scotland. The building is absolutely beautiful and has views over the reservoir equally as beautiful. We managed to spot lots of deer and stag on the hills with the binoculars provided. Our stay was very good, and there was a fantastic breakfast included in the price. My only gripe was that the room we were put in seemed very small and cramped, but this isn’t to say all the other rooms were like this one. If you rely on your mobile data then this may not be the hotel for you, but personally we loved being without mobile data and not having WiFi in our room. More...

I don’t think I can put into words how special The Haweswater is! My husband and I got married at the hotel a few weeks ago and I can’t believe how much genuine care and warmth we were shown by everyone. ||||We chose the hotel because of the beautiful setting and the lovely individual rooms but also and mainly for the amazing team who make this hotel feel like home. When you walk through the door time seems to stop.||||The Rooms - The Art Deco theme tastefully runs through the hotel whilst everywhere remains comfortable and cosy. The rooms are all unique, many with amazing views. If you choose a back room there may not be direct views but still a comfy get away. If you make the choice to get one of the suites with one of the luxurious plunge baths make sure you put aside time to use it. Was so lovely for some relaxation before our wedding day.||||The Food - generous portions of well made local produce. We couldn’t fault anything we ate across the three days we stayed, or the countless times we visited for a meal before our big day. The dining room has lots of light and lovely views out to the garden and across the reservoir. If there is a cheesecake on the menu definitely go for it! (But the sticky toffee pudding is pretty amazing too). The breakfast offering is really impressive as well. I travel for work and haven’t had such a tasty breakfast in a hotel before. I personally loved the eggs and salmon on fennel toast.||||The Team - everyone at The Haweswater are just so genuine, friendly, considerate and caring. It’s so clear that everyone loves the hotel and that comes across in the amazing service they offer. John helped us plan our wedding and he really couldn’t have done more for us! I also have to mention Alicia because she really made our wedding so special! If you see her at the hotel you will know exactly who she is because her warm and bubbly personality is infectious. She went so above and beyond for us! There are so many other incredible members of the team who all work together to make the hotel feel like home from home. The service is real, honest, relaxed and friendly. ||||Top Tips - as the hotel is quite isolated the WiFi isn’t great in the rooms so be prepared for a bit of an online detox unless you’re in the common areas downstairs. Book for dinner in advance for a choice of dining slots as the restaurant can be very popular with other guests. Wake up early and watch the light come up over the reservoir - you won’t be disappointed with the array of colours you see.||||Overall this hotel is the best I’ve ever stayed in. The feeling you have when you’re there is second to none. It’s the combination of amazing setting, tasteful decor and incredible staff that makes it such a special place.||||Every single guest at our wedding couldn’t compliment the hotel highly enough. They loved it just as much as we do. In fact, they are all planning a visit back they enjoyed it so much!||||If I haven’t sold it to you yet...I don’t know what else I can say! This is a true hidden gem and if you happen to want to get married there, don’t give it a second thought! They will do you and themselves proud! ||||To The Haweswater - thank you! We can’t wait to come back! More...

My husband and I loved our stay at the Haweswater Hotel. A quirky hotel with 1920s/1930s decor. We were lucky enough to be upgraded and our room was beautiful. Me and my partner chose the Haweswater as our wedding venue and it was the best decision we could have made. Our wedding weekend with them was such an incredible weekend and I am so impressed by the Haweswater and the incredible team that make it as special as it is. The food was some of the best I have ever tasted, the rooms are gorgeous, the hotel has so much character and the views are stunning. It is clear it is a much loved hotel, it’s real and unpretentious and a little worn in places - but that is its charm and why I love it. It also just so tranquil with its views and roaring fires - the perfect escape from reality. ||||What really stood out to me though was how the team went above and beyond at every opportunity. Nothing was too much trouble for them. John, Ben, Jess, Alicia, Charlotte and everybody else we met were just themselves, they were genuine, friendly and welcoming and let us make our wedding really us. Our guests all commented on the amazing service. The genuine warmth the staff have and the fun they had with the wedding was brilliant. I’m sure they were so busy throughout the weekend but they were always so calm, always up for a chat and made us feel like old friends. For example. Alicia designed special bar menus for us, chatted to every single guest at some point and remained upbeat and positive throughout. They weren’t there just to help with the wedding celebrations but were there to celebrate our wedding with us and that in itself made our wedding so personable, warm and inclusive. They elevated an already special day to something incredible and I will always remember them for that. I would recommend the Haweswater Hotel to anyone looking for a special getaway and would definitely recommend them for a couple looking for the perfect wedding venue. More...

We stayed here on the first night of our two week road trip forour honeymoon. |Safe to say we were not disappointed! |The hotel has character you don't get in a hotel chain! |It had rained all day so we couldn't appreciate the views of the lake until the following morning. |Welcomed by a lovely chap and explained all we needed to know about the hotel. |My favourite part was the honesty about the wifi ... I'm sure most people would complain but who cares if you have to go a little "off the grid" for a day? |Internet works best if you're an early riser and no one else is! |Our room was delightful- big enough for one night. Few light bulbs not working but we informed the team on check out.|Bar- lovely; we sat by the fire and had an aperitif before dinner. |Dinner- soup was home made! We both and a starter and main and never felt pushed to have a dessert! |Breakfast- the choices on the set menu were plentiful. Theres a table in the lobby which has croissants, yoghurt, juice etc on. ||This place was a perfect way to start our honeymoon! |Thank you! More...

Overlooking the lake and hills with splendid views, this hotel is a real gem. Off the Beaten track, tranquil place beautifully decorated in the Art Deco style, with personal service. ||Easy parking and a warm welcome. We had the Mardale Suite on the first floor, dual aspect large lounge overlooking the hills and lake, well equipped throughout and tastefully decorated with lots of space. Comfy separate bedroom, luxury comfy bed and well appointed bathroom. A few things would have added to our stay, bathrobes and mirror in the bedroom.||Hotel boasts a lovely lounge area with comfy chairs and a roaring fire. Play a little chess whilst taking in the views. Well tended gardens abound.||Dinner is served in the impressive dining room, with the marvellous lights. Its first come first serve re seating and the window seats will always be popular (you can though book | a dining time). As guests leave, tables are quickly “turned over”. ||Large tables with comfy chairs, many have wings, heavy cutlery, proper linen napkins and thin wine glasses - as would be expected. Great menu, the crab starter was the star although the creme brûlée was one of the best I’ve ever had (all deserts are made on site and if you book direct are complimentary). The pork was well cooked and the signature beef pie off the classic menu is hard to beat. ||Our Malbec was very good, we had a second and retired to the lounge. Reasonably priced too. ||Lunch is available till 4 each day, try the Rarebit.||Splendid breakfast, tasty sausage and bacon and lovely coffee, relaxing and stunning views.||Overall a delightful stay, remotish (and no phone signal although wifi is available free in public areas) but a perfect end to our trip to the lakes. ||Highly recommend.|||| More...

The hotel is in a lovely location overlooking Haweswater Reservoir and is ideal for walkers and visitors to the Lake District. Although a little rustic in décor and facilities the hotel has a certain charm and can boast the presence of red squirrels feeding from its bird table at times of the year. Evening meals and breakfasts are very good and there is plenty on offer.||The service provided by all members of staff was very good, however, our visit was made so much more pleasant by the excellent attitude and service provided by both Alicia and John who were excellent in all respects. We went for a short break with friends. The location is beautiful and peaceful - a world away from the bustle of Ambleside. The first time I saw this hotel online I thought WOW I need to go. Myself and my boyfriend were so shocked when we arrived, it's far out from everything and the views are amazing - its quiet and surrounded by wildlife. The hotel sells bags of peanuts and seed to feed all the birds and squirrels with. The last time we went we treated ourselves to a balcony room and sat out for ages watching the birds fly past and take the seed whilst enjoying a drink. The menu here is really nice, it has been of good quality on the two occasions we have been. Breakfast was good too with a reasonable choice too and good service. The restaurant and bar are tastefully decorated and comfortable to sit in, both again provide great views which makes eating even more enjoyable. There is a lounge sort of room at the front of the hotel with magazines and board games which is a great addition for a rainy idea which is all too frequent in the lakes! The hotel itself is of nice decor and is quite big. The staff we have come across both times were really nice, one girl in particular working on the reception and bar couldn't do enough, she even made me strawberry daiquiri on request. The manager at the time Ben I think his name was was informative and helpful. We are desperate to go back to this place however everytime we have checked the prices they have been steep. Lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere. Very quiet with no phone signal. The hotels WiFi is intermittent. The hotel has a lovely art deco feel inside with many original features still there. Our bedroom had a modern bathroom. The bedroom was a but more dated with cobwebs hanging off the wires connected to the TV. This somehow though added to the charm of the place. My wife has to have a gluten free diet and they fully accommodated her at meal times. Breakfast was good. Evening meal was excellent, we ate there both nights. Myself and my husband have just returned from a two night break at the Haweswater Hotel. I can’t recommend this place enough. A perfect experience from start to finish. I sort of don’t want to tell anyone about it because I want to keep the place to myself! Staff are fabulous - special shout out to Ben, you definitely looked after us and went above and beyond to make our stay special. We stayed in the Mardale Suite which has a vintage style in keeping with the hotel. It’s a beautiful large room with stunning views of the lake. We ate lunch and dinner both days at the hotel and found it very good and of a high standard. We were blessed with glorious weather and took advantage of the walks around the lake. If you want a remote location with stunning views, good service and a hotel that holds an abundance of charm them look no further. I can’t wait to return. More...

Before our stay I had called to discuss allergies, and they were incredibly helpful. This hotel enjoys a unique place on Haweswater.......it is the only building on the lake. The surroundings are totally unspoilt and undeveloped. It benefits from this and the almost complete absence of traffic.||The hotel looks rather gothic from outside, a grey stone building with crenellations dotted about but it was built in the 1930's and opened in 1937 and where the original flooring and interior features have been retained it is Art Deco in style.||The public rooms are spacious and comfortable with log fires though the fires are only haphazardly lit/kept alight. Lovely when they are though.||Our bedroom was in the "loft"; the second floor, comfortable and with uninterrupted views across the lake to the hills opposite. The bathroom felt a little dated but was adequate. Housekeeping leaves something to be desired though. Beneath the bed had not been cleaned for sometime and this could be a problem for allergy sufferers as the hotel is very dog friendly. The servicing of the room was no more than a bed making exercise.||Our room was very quiet but there is no carpeting on the stairs or in the rooms- just wooden floors with rugs, so it may be the case that the rooms on the lower floor have a noise problem.||We ate in the hotel on both evenings and the food was enjoyable. The breakfasts were generous but not as well cooked as dinner, unless you like hard poached eggs! As well as cooked breakfast there was fresh fruit salad, croissants, muffins, yoghurts, fruit juice etc. You couldn't go hungry.||The staff are brilliantly friendly and obliging and make ones stay very pleasant. We, sadly, only stayed here one night. Wish it had been more. The hotel was amazing the staff so so friendly. Run by a small team who were all very attentive and helpful and kind enough to chat to us about the hotel’s interesting history. The hotel even has some almost tame red squirrels in the grounds that come each morning for a feed and give guests a great photo opportunity. Beautiful birds also come to feed and the sound of the birdsong is the only noise you can hear in this idyllic place. The views are breathtaking. The food was excellent the room we were in in the loft was quirky with a fantastic view across the lake and it was spotlessly clean and had a large en-suite with a large bath with a shower over. Also had a large tv. Tea/coffee facilities in the bedroom. Only downside is no phone signal or WiFi available in the rooms but WiFi was available when you sat in the very comfortable lounge or bar. This hotel is in an absolutely beautiful location, the building stands proud overlooking the reservoir. The current owner is doing a fantastic job in updating rooms with sympathy to the original feel of the building. It is dog friendly but this does not impact on other hotel users at all. The grounds and terrace are well kept and its a pleasure to sit out on a warm sunny evening. Overall it really is a lovely place to stay although I do have two small gripes and that would be that I felt the manager was a little less interested in his guests than the rest of the staff, easily identified with his trilby hat he seemed to lack sincerity and warmth towards the customers. The other gripe is that in such a quiet location being woke up at 7am to the sound of staff in the alleyway below my room window clattering about, talking loudly without a thought of the guests still asleep above them was annoying. That said I will definitely be returning in the future. More...

I booked this hotel for two nights, with the plan of proposing to my girlfriend in the beautiful surroundings of Haweswater reservoir. I emailed the hotel prior to booking and their response was quick and really helpful. They were on board right away with thoughtful ideas on how to arrange the perfect proposal vacation. |||| ||||Just prior to my stay I contacted the hotel again to confirm, and was very kindly offered a free upgrade to a room that they thought would be perfect for our stay, as it provides beautiful views of the reservoir. If you are able to, I would recommend staying in the room called “High Street”. Breath-taking views, a wonderful plunge bath and the most comfortable of beds await you. You will wake up to stunning views and the peaceful chirp of birds on your window sill. My girlfriend (now fiancée) and I sprang out of bed each morning (and not just to enjoy a wonderful breakfast that set us up for the day).|||| ||||The staff could not have been more accommodating. They were all made aware of my intentions and played along like troopers to keep it a surprise. On the day in question, on our return to the hotel as a newly engaged couple, the hotel staff used the code phrase “Have you had a nice day?” to ensure that we were indeed engaged before they congratulated us warmly and provided us with a complimentary round of drinks. Their reactions to our special day were so genuine and heartfelt and you could see how invested they were in our engagement.|||| ||||The food and drink is exceptional. We shared and were increasingly envious of each other’s meals as they were all so wonderful. Had we stayed a longer, we could have chosen our meals blindly and with confidence, knowing that what we were presented with would be prepared to the highest of quality and would be simply delicious. To add yet another lovely touch to our stay, at our last evening meal, we were presented with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco to toast our happy engagement.|||| ||||The grounds of the hotel provide views of exceptional natural beauty, made better by the fact that signal is sparse in the area. Do not let this put you off, as getting away from the rat race restores you soul to pure tranquillity. There are plenty of places to sit and relax with a drink of something nice, but our favourite spot was two seats on the top level lawn, which proved to be a wonderful sun trap.|||| ||||The area is remote and it provides the best perks of this. However, only a short drive brings you to amazing sites such as Lowther Castle and Gardens (which really is a steal for the price of admission) and Shap Abbey. Lowther Castle and Gardens is a must visit for anyone, young or old. We were under the impression it was a shell of a disused castle gone to seed. It is anything but. It is clearly run by expert curators who do justice to the beautifully preserved Castle and rolling gardens. I can imagine this place to be extremely busy on the weekends, but when we visited on the Friday, we were able to enjoy the place practically to ourselves. Top tip, get in early and enjoy the tree swing. Also, for families with little ones or big kids still young at heart, the hidden Castle is a feat of woodwork that took us both back to our childhood.|||| ||||In summary, Haweswater Hotel is an incredible place to stay and should be top on anyone’s list for a place to stay in the Lake District. We cannot fault a single thing and would like to thank the staff for making our stay truly memorable. We will be back to visit in the near future and already have agreed that we now must stay in Summer, Autumn and Winter to see how they compare to a wonderful Spring break. More...

This is a really lovely hotel, and a fabulous escape from the real world! No mobile signal, completely isolated, amazing lakeside location. Art Deco decor is gorgeous with a lot of attention to detail. We stayed in a loft (quirky decor which really appealed) with a breathtaking lake view. Staff were super-friendly and attentive, and the food in the restaurant was really good (not a huge or complicated menu but everything we chose was delicious). There are some small things which could be improved - the ‘continental’ element of breakfast wasn’t up to the standard I expected (boxed cereals, cheap jam), and the main toilets need some TLC but generally I would definitely recommend this for a relaxing escape. Had a good nights stay at this stylish hotel last week. All the staff were friendly & helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The room was a decent size with a huge bathroom and good shower but being an old property it was quite noisy when someone walked down the corridor. My only other complaint was that the heating in my bedroom didn’t work, the manager did try and sort it but it wasn’t a massive issue. ||||I ate down in the bar and the food was superb and not expensive for a hotel out in the sticks with a captive audience. There is a good mix of classics and more refined dishes, I went for the burger which was excellent washed down with a couple of craft ales. The homemade desserts were also impressive. ||||There is no lift at the property so if you struggle with stairs this really won’t be suitable. There is also no mobile phone signal, they do let you use the hotel’s phone, which was perfect for me as I could work on their WiFi uninterrupted. ||||The breakfast was also spot on with the Full English the ideal portion size to set you up for the day but without overfacing you. Service again was great.||||Overall I would defiantly stay here again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, slightly quirky hotel with excellent food in an incredibly tranquil location and I feel bad not giving five stars but not having any heating in the winter was a pretty big issue. The staff were friendly and knowledgable about the area.||||The views from the hotel were stunning and made even better because of the snow.||||We had the Marsale suit which slowed us to see the reservoir at its best.||||The dog was made very welcome and we ate very well every night in the bar.||||Well done everyone. We visited this Hotel with friends for lunch on a rather dull day however the greeting we received on entering the Hotel was second to none. As a wheelchair user and having been informed at the time of booking the ramp on a very small step was already in place. The food in the restaurant was good wholesome food served with a smile by a lovely man who kept good conversation. After knocking back three course of excellent food we retired to the loung for coffee and a roaring fire was lit without asking. A lovely place to have a long lunch with friends. More...

2 of us stayed 1 night in February 2019. Excellent location off the beaten track, parking available. There's an old world feel to the place but it's very pleasant, as are the staff. ||The room was fine, though not much of a view, with nice bathroom, comfortable bed and controllable heating (it was bitterly cold outside).||Breakfast was top class, full English. No mobile connection, which was fine by us. ||We dined and had a couple of drinks there. Top quality food, but on the expensive side in my view.||Had a very enjoyable walk round part of the lake. Very quiet. Must go back to walk the Old Corpse Road !||All round very good and we would go back. More...

We stayed in the Dun Bull, overlooking the reservoir which is just beautiful. The room was really nicely done - the only small piece of criticism was the bed could have been better with some puffier pillows and less springy mattress. But still was all great for a weekend break. The food was fantastic and the chef and staff are very accommodating. There is nothing around so unless you have your car, you can't go far! The great thing about this hotel is that it's the only property on Haweswater so you are tucked away in a very peaceful location. I came here as wanted to be able to not get in my car to go anywhere for a few days so that I could properly unwind. The hotel's location is fantastic and my room (one of the loft rooms) overlooked the reservoir so I was able to spend hours relaxing in an armchair in my room reading my book with a beautiful backdrop or in the comfortable sitting room. There are also a lot of both simple and challenging walks you can do directly from the hotel so good for walkers. It was lovely to be able to do nothing other than sleep, eat, walk and read without any hassle. The hotel is bursting with character as it retains it's original Art Deco features and also plays a lot of music from the era so you can easily feel transported back in time. Accommodation is very comfortable with plenty of room in the bar area and sitting room - both with open fires. My room was charming and characterful and very comfortable. Food is to a high standard and very well priced for the quality. I had very limited mobile signal (not a bad thing if you're there for a break) but they have a phone by reception that you can use for anything important. Most importantly I found the service standard very high and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Definitely top end for a 3 star hotel. Highly recommend. More...

We ate in the restaurant both nights and mornings and could not fault the food. There are some great walking routes nearby so the location is a big plus point.||Unfortunately, the hotel is a little shabby around the edges and could do with a good lick of paint in places. Me and my husband stayed here for our first wedding anniversary and chose it because of the peaceful and rural location. On our first night there was a large group (20+) of people who were being extremely loud in the bar, me and my husband couldn’t even hear each other. At breakfast the next morning, the same equally loud group were there and made comments to us such as “enjoy your peace while you can!” Which I found a bit weird and disrespectful. If you know you’re being loud and disrupting other people, surely you’d try and quieten down? ||We purposely booked our evening meal an hour before the big group due to the previous experiences but they turned up 30 minutes early and were being served champagne in the lobby bit and progressively got louder and louder the drunker they got. We rushed to finish our food, because again we couldn’t have a conversation because it was too loud. We were disappointed that the staff didn’t seem to respect the other people staying at the hotel and it seems weird that if it was a big group of lads on a stag do it would be a different story but because it was a group of older people, it was fine? ||It did kinda taint our stay as we were after a romantic weekend away but it seems we couldn’t really get any peace. ||The room was really nice, a few cobwebs in the corner of the room but aside from that, it was exactly what we wanted. There was a gap in the floorboards in the bathroom where you could see into the room below which was a bit odd... ||The food was the best bit of our trip. It was amazing. Well worth the trip just for the food, and the serving staff/bar staff were extremely good and attentive. ||Aside from the loud guests, we’d definitely go back! More...
