If you like cuban food, this is the place to go in Richmond. Cigars are cheap and more or less authentic depending on what you get. The Ropa Vieja is a must try for steak lovers. Definitely recommended. More...

This spot has very tasty food and great service. I'm a huge fan of the wings, which are crispy and have a good amount of meat. The wings only come in one flavor, but it absolutely delicious. If you like spicy, these wings will satisfy you to the fullest. Honestly, I could drink the sauce it's so good. Additionally, the Taste of Habana dish is an excellent entree to order. You have three different options including flank steak, roasted pork, or Cuban chili. I opted for Cuban chili, and it was packed with flavor. The dish itself is large with tostones, maduros, jasmine rice, black beans, and garnished with sour cream. The food and ingredients truly go well together. This spot is also known for their mojitos, which is super delicious. All the ingredients were mixed well and nothing was overpowering in the overall flavor. It's a great choice if you like mixed drinks, especially a mojito. The staff members were friendly and quick to serve. The atmosphere is clean with nice vintage decor. The only major downside is that the non-smoking section smells like smoke. If you don't want to smell smoke, this may not be the best spot. If you don't care about the smell of smoke, you'll have an excellent time with what Havana 59 has to offer. More...

Awesome experience any day of the week. Thursday night offering salsa dancing and cheap appetizers and beers/mixed drinks during their happy hour. Service can run a bit slow on busy Friday and Saturday evenings, but well worth the wait. Cuban sandwich is wonderful and pairs well with a Corona. Plantain nachos are also a very unique excellent appetizer. Highly highly recommend as a Shockoe Bottom local. More...

I've walked by Havana 59 many times but always had somewhere else I needed to be. Was able to have dinner there recently, though, and enjoyed it. There is a smoking and non-smoking seating option as they have a cigar lounge. I opted for non-smoking. Service was good and the vibe was fun. I ordered the Arroz con Pollo and thought it was really very good. The chicken had a very nice crisp to the skin and the rice was crunchy at the edges of the pan -which was nice. It was a lot of food and could easily be shared. The chicken was great but I think next time I'll go without it as the vegetables and rice together were both enough and really tasty. I look forward to going back. More...

Havana 59 is a wonderfully unique restaurant. Both in terms of atmosphere and menu it is a place that you want to check out. The building looks old and rundown but it's by design and it is reminiscent of what an older building in Havana would actually look like. So it's quite an experience to check it out.  Latin music plays nonstop only adding to the overall experience.Food: the menu is not huge but it offers some great options and everything we ordered was delicious. I had the portion of paella for one person, which was plenty of food for me, and it was stocked full of good seafood (fish, mussels, and shrimp) and also a homemade chorizo sausage that was  outstanding.  I really enjoyed the flavors and the portion. Definitely recommend it.My wife had the ropa vieja, which translates to old clothes, but the name does the dish no  justice as it was full of flavor and perfectly cooked. It was truly delicious. We also had a calarmi appetizer that was great. The breading was crispy and the sauce it came with was full of flavor and had just the right amount of heat.I have nothing bad to say about the food and atmosphere at Havana 59.The bad: The only thing I did not like, and the sole reason this is not a five star review, is the cigarette smoke. The non smoking areas is separated from the bar/smoking area but we still smelled smoke for the entirety of our meal. When we got home our clothes smelled of smoke as well. I almost did not stay to eat there because of it, but after trying the food, I was glad I did. But that is definitely something ownership should address. Overall I really enjoyed the experience at Havana 59, and again, based on food and atmosphere it's five stars. But that smoking situation is bad enough to knock off a star. More...

I LOVE the atmosphere of this place! This was my first time here and I'm already making plans fir my next visit. Our waiter, Connor, was so awesome! ! He was super attentive and kept us happy the whole time. The drinks, although a bit pricey (my strawberry lemon mojito was $12), were delicious. I had the shrimp empanadas appetizer and they were tasty. The nachos my sister had were a little less flavorful. The actual "nachos" were crispy plantains. Overall, I was glad we tried them out. My niece tried the cubano  sandwich, which she enjoyed. We didn't try any cigars, because I'm not a smoker, but sitting on the smoking side didn't bother me at all. They also have playing cards on each table, which makes the wait for food and drinks fly by. I can't wait to go back! More...

As a Cuban-American whose father moved heaven and earth for his son to have opportunity, I love and appreciate these great privately owned local spots. It's difficult to explain all the challenges you experience throughout the day but it's nice having places like this to relax and recharge for another day of working hard and grinding away. More...

Food was good. Better than KubaKuba. Although my plantain was undercooked. I mentioned it to the waitress as constructive criticism in hopes it won't happen again and be served to a less forgiving customer. I was fine with it and didn't want a replacement. Her response was "thanks for the criticism, it's her first day." 1. As a customer I don't need to know that. 2. What you just told me is you employ workers and let them cook without knowing exactly how to cook the items on the menu. Bad form. Overall I enjoyed my meal. I recommend a visit. More...

Been here a few times now. Once for a birthday dinner (food was good). Once for drinks at the bar (also good). And the most recent time for the salsa lesson upstairs on Thursday nights (easy to follow along and fun). The lesson was great but the space was crowded. They should really cap the number of people they allow in that space. They do allow cigar smoking in this establishment so just be aware if the scent will bother you. Also my bill at the bar upstairs included gratuity already so just watch for that when you get your check. More...
