Excellent service. We have had our pond fish for many years and we're moving home. We wanted to take our fish with us. I contacted 5 companies and only H2O plants replied. Billy from H2O agreed to transport all our fish on the day following our house move. A new pond had been previously built at the new location. Billy emptied and safely caught all our fish, approximately 50 large goldfish and koi from the pond and transported them all 570 miles to our new home and placed them all safely into the new pond. All fish arrived looking very well. Billy added some new pond products to the new pond and gave us good advice on settling the fish into their new environment. One month on all fish are very well. Billy is thoroughly reliable and your fish will be in very safe hands. If you need any fish to be transported just call H2O. More...

He has carried out an exceptional job in providing a new filter and pump and completely revitalised my pond. Not only that but he has also come up with some excellent planting and lighting suggestions. Billy just gets on with the job in hand and is also extremely polite and responsive to questions. We had 2 Koi Carp that had grown too big for our pond.We went to an aquatic centre in Enfield & they suggested we contact Billy Hancock, the owner of H20 Plants. Billy came to see the fish & agreed to move them to a larger pond. We'd had one of the fish for 35 years, the other for 20 years,so were obviously worried about where they would end up. Billy showed us photos of where they were going & came back a few days later to collect them.Talk about 5 star travel--they were carefully put into a large aerated tank & taken to their new home.Since then, Billy has sent us a video of our two old friends in their massive new pond & we couldn't be happier.Billy is very caring & very professional. Everything in life needs oxygen so your pond or lake is no different. A few signs that your water quality is void of oxygen will be;

dead or dying fish
excess algae growth
foul smelling water
lots of surface insects.
The above factors will be detrimental to any water body and the people who use it. Most issues regarding lack of oxygen will become apparent in the summer months when the days are sunnier, air temps rise and so does your water temp.

Most oxygen in water is found in the top layer of the water, so when this warms up your dissolved oxygen levels will start to drop. Other issues which will create depleted oxygen supplies are nutrients levels in the pond or lake which can be dictated by run off from surrounding fields, silt on the bottom of the pond/lake and/or excessive aquatic vegetation growth which consumes oxygen when its being broken down.

The quickest way to eradicate the above is to add oxygen to the water via aeration. The art of aerating a water body by introducing oxygen in to the water column can be done in a few ways.

Surface aeration would be to introduce a floating aerating fountain that takes water from the top level of pond/lake and throws it into the air mixing it with oxygen that then falls back onto the waters surface introducing oxgen back into the water.

Diffused (coarse or fine bubble) aeration is where air is pumped from a land mounted pump or compressor via hose to diffusers (made from EPDM membrane or ceramic stone) that sit on the bottom of your pond or lake. The air that is pumped to the diffusers creates bubbles that go from the pond/lake bottom up to the surface creating mass circulation of the pond/lake water which helps to break up thermal stratification. By doing this it stimulates the aquatic life at the bottom which feed on organic matter. Adding extra oxygen to your water increases aerobic bacteria which helps to break down nutrients and organic waste in the water.

This oxygen rich water can also help to break down Fecal coliform which if present in large enough numbers the pond or lake could be shut down as a Public Health & Safety issue.

The type of location where aeration can be benefical for the water body would be Local authority park lakes, boating lakes, ponds/Lakes on housing developements, golf course water hazards, fishing ponds or lakes, attenuation ponds, effluent ponds, koi ponds, garden ponds or any other water body!

We can hire or supply & install a custom soultion for your pond or lake to make sure your water quality stays as it should be.

Should you wish to make a feature out of your fountain we can also do things like this!

Water Quality

Pond, Lake and Fishery maintenance and management is a science.

A better understanding of the aquatic ecosystem and the causes & effects of the interrelated factors are critical to successfully manage any pond, lake or fishery.

Every body of water is a unique ecosystem that requires the proper analysis and understanding. NO two are the same and as such no one maintenance or management program will provide the same results on two different locations.

The delicate balance between environmental factors like temperature, nutrients, and oxygen play an important role in creating the maintenance and management program for any pond, lake or fishery.

Blanket weed, duck weed, submerged weed, water lilies, reeds are just a few of the things our fully trained & insured staff can control by either biological, chemical, mechanical or manual methods.

Our staff hold the following City & Guilds NPTC certificates PA1, 5 & 6 (all units) which allows them to apply herbicide on land and in/near any water body including from a boat across the U.K.

Once a site survey has been carried out to identify the nuisance vegetation, the correct method of treatment will be recommended along with any other ideas about preventing any future re occurrence of the weed.

We have over 30 years experience in treating aquatic weeds like blanket weed, duck weed, water lilies, submerged weed and reeds. Most of the products that we use are not available to the general public.

Please read the below to clarify who can and cannot use herbicide in a professonal manor!

Amateur use of pesticides Under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 and 1997 (as amended) it is an offence for a ‘professional use only’ pesticide to be used by someone who is not a professional user. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines a professional user as someone who is trained and competent to carry out the work they are called on to do and uses the product as part of their work.

The legal bit: The law states that anyone who uses or applies pesticides in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Industry or Amenity workplaces must possess a valid Pesticide Certificate in order to comply with regulations. This legislation isn't optional and it applies to volunteers, employed and self-employed people alike.

All users of biocides must be trained and competent for the tasks they are required to perform. There is no requirement for a user of biocides (or non-agricultural pesticides as they are referred to under COPR) to have gained a 'certificate of competence'.

However, the law says that if a person is using a biocide in the course of their business then they must have received appropriate information, instruction and training in the use of biocides.

The type of training required/received would cover issues such as the legislation, the correct use of biocides and how to carry out a risk assessment under the Control of Substance Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). Those using biocides have a duty to properly assess a situation before they use a biocide, and consider the options for treatment and the potential risks involved, to ensure that a product is used in a way that reduces any risks from its use.

All users (except home gardeners) are required to ensure that they are competent in their duties and have received adequate instruction in the safe, efficient and humane use of pesticides; certificates of competence are also required by some specified users, that is, all users applying pesticides to either land or water which is not their property or that of their employers; and all users born after 31 December 1964, unless they are under direct supervision (that is, within eyesight and voice contact) of a certificate holder.

Grandfather Rights There is no longer an exemption in UK law, commonly known as "grandfather rights”. The Plant Protection Products (Sustainable Use) Regulations 2012 exemption ceased to exist from 27th November 2015. Everyone who now uses PPPs authorised for professional use must hold a Certificate of Competence.

Moving home and want to take your fish with you?

Not sure how you’ll do it?

Well you have just found the answer!

H2O Plants Aquatic and Environmental Services move tonnes of fish each year, over hundreds of miles in our fully oxygenated fish transportation tanks made by Linn in Germany for not only commercial customers like fishing clubs but domestic customers who are moving home as well.

These tanks are specially made for the job from either fibreglass or two layer polyethylene which are ideal for moving your fish safely from A to B.

The tanks are fitted with locking lids to prevent fish from jumping out and the water is fed with a regulated oxygen supply from a secure oxygen bottle in our vehicle to keep your fish alive whilst on the move.

No matter what size of fish, amount or what ever distance, we can get your fish from A to B with minimal fuss.

We can also hire holding tanks if you are having a new pond constructed.

When you come to have your pond or water feature built one of the most important choice you will make will be what type of liner will you use.

Butyl or Firestone liners are often the choice for the garden pond or a pre formed fibreglass pond is a quick and easy solution to get a size and shape however, if you want your own design of pond and something that will give it the wow factor then our fibreglassing service could be the answer.

Once the pond has been dug, the walls have been built, the surfaces rendered to make them nice and smooth (the smoother the finish the better the fibreglass will look) and it has all dried out its time to carry out the fiberglass work.

We will come to the pond and give everything a once over then apply 2 coats of 450gsm matting coated with resin and wait until dry. Once dry the surface will be sanded down to take away any imperfections and then all dust will be removed.

After the area has been cleaned thoroughly we will apply a top coat in the colour of your choice which is normally black or British racing green for koi ponds however, the choice of colours is unlimited.

The top coat must be left to dry thoroughly prior to filling the pond up.

The above process will give you a leak free pond or water feature for many, many years.

You need a filter what do you choose?

Pump fed, gravity fed, trickle towers, centrifugal filters, sand filters, bead filters, multi chamber or a pressurised system?

Biological, mechanical, Ultra Violet or vegetable filters?

The way your pond is constructed will play a major part in deciding what type of pond filtration you can install. A couple of factors that need to be taken into consideration besides the cost are the position of the pond, is it in full/part sun, the volume of water the pond will hold when full, does it have bottom drains, does it have surface skimmers and finally what type of fish are you planning to keep?

Why so many questions? Well if you are going to keep koi then the general rule of thumb is that if the pond is 5000 gallons then you will need a filter that has the capacity to filter double that amount of water which is 10,000 gallons.

If you only have a mixed selection of fish then you get a filter that does the water volume of your pond.

The reason for asking about the amount of sun the pond will get is because a pond in full sun will be more prone to its effects, the water turning green being the major one. So now we know the pond is in full sun we will upscale the amount of Ultra Violet clarifiers that are installed to prevent this from happening.

If the pond has bottom drains installed then we can use the run of pipe to install a pond sieve that prevents larger items of debris like leaves/twigs/stones from getting into the pump housing and filter.

Each pond is different and just because you have seen a filter on your mates pond or Dave at work says use this filter it doesn't mean that they will work on your pond. There are various manufactures that provide out of the box filtration that include the filter and UV clarifier as an all in one package that can be purchased from your local aquatic centre or you can go down the custom built route using multiple chambers with various configurations of the many different types of filter media that are available and a separate UV clarifier unit.

Please remember that you can never over filter the water in your pond however, under filtering the water means that your fish could be suffering from stress due to poor water quality.

We deal directly with many of the major pond filter manufacturers/suppliers in the UK and also in Europe so give us a call and we can visit you and discuss the best filtration solution for your pond.

Our expert pond builders have over 30 years expertise in creating waterfalls.

We can also repair or maintain your waterfall should you require.

Maybe you don't have the space for a pond or just want to hear the sound of running water in your garden.

If the answer is yes then there is a vast array of water features that can be installed by our water gardening experts.

If you have a contemporary/modern garden we can custom design and install one of our bespoke stainless steel feature that will be unique to you and you only.

Maybe you would like a monolith installed into a secluded corner with planting surrounding it to give it a lush tropical feel and the water flowing down it will enhance the colours of the chosen monolith. These can be supplied in various stones like slate, quartz, marble, granite and semi-precious.

If you have a formal garden then the clean straight lines of a rill would be a great addition. These are a small narrow channel of water which can either be made using abox welded liner like Butyl/SealEco or fibreglassed.

In a well-established garden a unique piece of driftwood could be the answer. In time this will become moss covered if you allow the moss to grow and just blend in with the existing planting scheme.

If you have a large lake and think that it looks feature less than a fountain will be the answer. With various spray patterns and submersed lights we can create the wow factor.

Maybe you just want a small self-contained pebble pool that can sit on your patio so you can hear the sound of water as you enjoy the great British summer weather .

As you can see from the list above our expert installers can and will create the perfect water feature for your required space. Like with our pond construction service our in house designer can visit your property talk over your requirements and the come back with a scale drawing and design of a water feature that fits in perfectly with your garden and your lifestyle

If your pond has poor water quality this can quickly cause problems for your fish’s health.

The poorer the quality of your water is the more likely it is your fish will start to suffer and become open to attacks form waterborne bacteria, fungus, parasites and virus's.

There can be many reasons why your water quality is not good enough;

• Under or lack of filtration

• Non-maintained filters

• Too many fish

• Too much organic waste

• Excessive feeding

• New fish introduction’s

• Changes in environmental factors

• Lack of aeration

Making the water quality better could be as simple as changing the food you feed your fish, adding some aeration or mean upgrading your filtration system altogether.

Why not give us a call so we can come and visit your pond, take a water sample or examine your fish then come up a solution or treatment plan to get your pond/fish back in shape.
