I first tried out Groundwork Fitness in downtown Long Beach in January of 2015 with a new years personal training deal and I've loved it ever since. I do the group fitness classes 2-3 times a week. Gio is the best trainer. She has varied, creative workouts and I always feel great afterwards even if I'm glaring at her during class (sorry Gio!). But you know I love it, because I come back for more. I love going there knowing I'll get a great workout without having to think or plan. Now I have not gone every single week for the last 4 years. But Gio creates such a friendly environment, I feel welcomed by staff and members when I return after a hiatus. People are encouraged to work at their own pace, speak up and support each other. She asks if we have any injuries or aches/pains so she can modify the workout to our needs. I love this gym because it is friendly, works me hard, listens to my needs and is close to my home. I can walk there or use the free 2 hour lot across the street. The bonus to working out with Gio is that she really loves Long Beach and works to make it a better place inside (nutrition and health talks) and outside the gym (Keep Long Beach Fit). This gym is a gem in the middle of Downtown Long Beach. Attending regular evening classes that accommodate people of all abilities, I feel far fitter now than I did six months ago when I started. Owner Gio, along with trainers Kristine and Lorenzo, maintains the most positive gym environment I've ever seen; all are welcome, and there's encouragement and challenge without any hint of a negative football coach / drill instructor vibe. Rules and schedules are clearly posted, the equipment is in great working order and clean at all times, and there are plenty of mini-lockers for your stuff. They'll help you set long term goals, and they bring in things like dunk-tank body-fat testing machinery to help track your progress. I'm very happy I found this place! More...

I've now been working out with Gio consistently (3 or 4 times every week) for eight months. This is the longest stretch I've ever had at a gym, and I still feel as fresh and excited about it as day one. Gio has a mind for how bodies work and what kind of exercise helps make the body work better. Each of your hour-long workouts here will be designed from that perspective. Sometimes all of your large muscle groups will get worked out, sometimes you'll focus on smaller muscle groups in your back or your glutes, etc. This variation and attention to optimizing functionality has meant that I have become stronger, better with my balance, more in-tune with how my body responds to particular movements, and generally more comfortable (less achy and injury-prone)  in my every day. Outside the gym I am a mile hog. I like long distance running and cycling. My body can handle more of that and will likely keep going for longer because Groundwork helps me do the maintenance work that is necessary for staying strong, keeping excellent posture, recruiting the right muscles, etc. Plus, I'm faster than I used to be. Freakin' sweet.I came to Groundwork to sweat, I stayed for the mind-blowing transformation of my body. And the friends I've made at the gym have sweetened the deal even more. More...

If I could give higher than five stars, I would. Gio and Groundwork are completely phenomenal. Gio is the best trainer I've ever worked with--she really gets to know her clients' strengths and weaknesses and helps them improve effectively with positive coaching and deep physiological expertise. The classes are high-energy and actually fun; they're challenging in a new way each time and give a comprehensive workout. The atmosphere is supportive and non-judgmental -- the intensity drives everyone to work hard, but collaboratively. Everyone knows each other by name and welcomes newcomers warmly. I've only been attending Groundwork Fitness for about 3 months, and the classes have completely shifted the way I think about health and fitness. Not only is the atmosphere friendly, inviting, and communal, but Gio really knows how to give a balanced full body workout. Every class is different with a new, exciting, and challenging variation of foundational exercises. I've also only encountered nothing but kind and incredible people that work out here. I feel stronger and more excited to work out since integrating these classes into my life. Get Strong.  Gio is an incredible personal trainer and team builder with a loyal fitness community at her gym in the heart of Long Beach. I started at Groundwork Fitness in July 2017 and I absolutely love the wellness culture at the gym and Gio's holistic view on fitness. I am the type of person that looks for variety and hit plateaus if I am not get into a routine. At Groundwork Fitness every workout session is a different exercise, body part combinations, cardio intensity, strength intensity and style. I have done group and personal training sessions with Gio. Her workouts are full functional body movements so the whole body is getting worked out during an exercise. Gio is an amazing trainer and she deeply cares about everyone achieving their goals. She does not believe in cookie cutter type workout outs for all and will tailor exercises based on what she knows about my physical background. Groundwork fitness is one of Long Beach's  best gyms. The personal trainer is very knowledgeable. The personal trainer helps you achieve your goals of fitness through Circuit training full body workouts. I'm so glad that I decided to stop and take the class. The most friendly, welcoming, inspiring, badass gym I've ever been to. I dropped in here  while traveling from Denver and was treated like family by the owner Gio and the whole class. They made my wife and I feel like we were home and the workout didn't disappoint. Awesome circuit of moves, Gio helped with form, modifications and pushed everyone. This gym is so friendly and accepting of all levels, I can't emphasize my love for this small business. It has a friendly and family like feeling the moment you walk in. The trainers are exceptional and are great at modifying exercises for me. If in Long Beach this is a great local gym to check out. I was a client of Gio's for several years and I can't express how great this place is. I had never felt so healthy, strong, and so excited to work out. I was literally there everyday because it was ALWAYS an awesome workout that focused on my entire body. I always left feeling accomplished and proud for committing to myself. Gio is passionate about what/who she loves and she goes out of her way to create a space that is energetic and welcoming. She takes a wholistic approach when it comes to fitness. She meets you where you are at and gives you the tools and support you need to reach your goals. She becomes your advocate and the people here become your friends and cheer you on while you carry a full grown man on your back while doing bear-crawls. This is a community and they will welcome you with open arms. Groundwork Fitness was highly recommended to me and it didn't disappoint. When I walked in the owner Gio was there to show me around and explain all the personal training and group training options. How many gyms give that kind of service?! Group classes are taught by Gio herself and are small enough so everyone gets the attention they need. She encourages you to pace yourself and be mindful of your own body - her personal attention to all aspects of the space, the routine and the clients make the real difference from other corporate gyms. I can't recommend Groundwork Fitness more emphatically!!!  This gym is more than a gym... it a community, a place I go for support, encouragement, and one hell of a challenging workout!I was a big boy... 256 lbs and since last August 2016, I have dropped to 186 lbs and from a size 38 to a size 30.  While it is true that I have changed my lifestyle with healthy eating habits, a commitment to weight training... it was Groundwork Fitness and it's amazingly cool owner, Gio, that I attribute to keeping me fit.And it doesn't matter what fitness level you find yourself: novice or experienced, athlete or haven't seen the inside of a gym in years.., the beauty of this place is that everyone is welcome and you work to your potential... it keeps me coming back again and again!  Thanks Gio!!! From my first interaction via email with Gio at Groundworks, I felt welcomed. My first class was free and it was awesome. Gio asked about my limitations and made the necessary changes for me. This place has a very social club feeling, everyone is so welcoming and friendly. I immediately felt like a part of the family. I did a month unlimited since I am only in town for a few weeks. My husband and I bought some group fitness classes at Groundwork Fitness while we were visiting Long Beach on vacation. We loved it. Not only was it a great workout and reasonably priced, but what impressed us the most was the positivity and warmth of Gio and all the other clients. Gio is very encouraging and knows the class participants very well. She is very passionate and knowledgeable about fitness. She checked in with us several times during class to see how we were doing. We definitely got a sense of community there. People come for a good workout, but they also enjoy being there, laughing and feeling good. Thanks so much for the positive experience. Just had an intense Group Fitness class at Groundworks!!!..This by far is one of the best gyms Long Beach has to offer.  The trainers are genuinely interested in their clients and are very knowledgeable in their field.  Everyone at Groundworks feels like family and motivates one another.  Gio, who is not only the proprietor, but one of the trainers  also finds a way to involve the L.B. I love this place. And I do NOT like working out, never have. I have never been athletic and gyms typically turn me off because I've always been overweight and self-conscious about doing anything physical in public. But this place, well it's just... special. You are made to feel welcome, everyone there is happy and doing their own thing, pushing their own limits. Gio does not tolerate any judgmental or negative vibes, she radiates positivism and she makes it a point to get to know each individual. She will find your strengths and be on the lookout for weaknesses to help you overcome them. I don't know how she keeps it all straight, but she manages to make her group classes very personal. And her workouts are amazing! She is just a genius when it comes to creative & fun exercise. Everything she has you do is a compound exercise so your 1 hour class is extremely effective. You get cardio, weight training and build your core all at the same time! Because she is so creative, her workouts are constantly changing so your muscles never have time to get used to anything which really helps with body definition. And every one works to push their own limits. I remember feeling embarrassed in my first workout, because in the first 15 minutes I was already dripping in sweat and I had to catch my breath. Then I looked over at the others, (and this is an eclectic group; all ages, all races, fitness levels), and the super fit looking folks were just as wet and exhausted. Because EVERYONE is working out to their max. Whatever your max is, the person next to you has theirs and is working out at that level. I found it very comforting knowing that because it eliminated any self-conscious feeling I had about my own fitness level and what I could do. I was inspired to push myself at my own pace. That's just what Gio does, she makes you want to push yourself. If members are watching you, it's usually with a smile or shout out for encouragement, it's like everyone tries to continue fostering the positive experience Gio is building there. And once you show up regularly, well then you turn into Norm when he shows up at Cheers. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, Gio also works very hard at building our community. She is heavily involved in associations like DTLBA and HOPA, she is always helping people connect and supports other small businesses. She sets up volunteer events and partners with local non-profit agencies to help whenever she can and always lets members know in case they want to become involved. In short, if you are looking for a killer workout that wont ever get boring, surrounded by people who are there to work hard and encourage you to do the same, all while supporting a small business owner that is doing good for the downtown Long Beach area, you must try Groundwork Fitness! Being a runner for most of my life, I've been able to maintain a good level of fitness. Or so I thought. I've had my share of big gym memberships in the past and the only time I ever stepped foot in the facility was when I had signed up! I didn't know how to work out so I just avoided ever going. That whole view on working out at a gym changed the moment I took my first (FREE!) group workout class at Groundwork Fitness. And now this little Long Beach gym has become like a fitness family to me. The personal trainer and gym owner, Gio, is a great motivator, not only in fitness but in the community and in life. I jumped right into it and felt very welcomed. It doesn't matter what level of fitness you are, you work with what works for yourself. I am now realizing the strength and power I can gain from cross training and that working with weights doesn't always mean I'll be bulking up. This place is in central downtown Long Beach but inside, it totally has a New York/Brooklyn swagger. I had a great experience here! It's two floors, narrow space but certainly enough room to get a dynamic circuit going. The space is multifunctional and accommodates a variety of training setups. They emphasize "functional training" here so it's not the monotonous style of workouts you'd get at a regular gym or even a cross fit style gym. Gio is a total gem! Scrolling through old emails this morning and came across my first email to Giovanna Ferraro; Owner and Fitness Trainer at Groundwork Fitness.  The email was sent just over FOUR years ago to schedule my first training class. FOUR years later and I'm still at Groundwork Fitness multiple times a week benefiting from the passion and commitment that Gio invests in every one of her clients. I recall my very first class with Gio and knew then that Groundwork Fitness is one of those hidden treasures in life that you don't come across often.  I've dropped beads of sweat on that gym floor, been challenged to feel uncomfortable only to become comfortable moving on to the next challenge. At the end of every workout, somehow the challenges of the day dissipate leaving me with a feeling of peace and accomplishment.  The workouts provide various levels of challenge, individualized to every fitness level in a group setting. If your'e feeling up for it, just ask Gio to turn up the flame and see what happens!  The constant shifting from one station to the next blends both cardio and resistance training and prohibits muscles from falling into that comfort zone of familiar exercise. The long-time familiar faces and new that I spend time with each week are all wonderful people---working hard together to achieve our individual goals.  I highly recommend to anyone reading this review----take an introductory class at no charge and experience for yourself  what a great treasure we have here in Long Beach at Groundwork Fitness.  Thank you Gio for 4 amazing years and for everything that you do for me, your clients and our community! Gio is the owner of Groundwork Fitness, which is a long beach gym that offers group fitness and private sessions as well. I've been coming consistently since September of last year and absolutely love her approach to fitness. Her work ethic and dedication to her clients goes unmatched. She pays attention to the smallest details and always checks in with us on how our bodies are feeling. She finds creative ways to motivate us to achieve our fitness goals. I keep saying "us" and "our" because everyone in group session has become my fitness family. Everyone around me is encouraging me and pushes me to be better not only physically but mentally emotionally and yes even spiritually. So many of the fitness lessons I've learned from Gio have a beautiful parallel to my spiritual growth. Above all, Gio maintains so much humility in her service to the city of long beach and her efforts and passion to address homelessness. The ONE bad review describing a recent incident was only triggered because Gio sees her clients as family and wants her clients to feel respected safe and protected during work out sessions (second hand smoke that came inside the open gym door from the smoke shop people next store didn't exactly keep me focused, never-mind what it did to my lungs). I have been coming to Groundwork Fitness for a couple months now.  I have gone to several training places in the past, and this is definitely good for me right now.  Gio is the owner and a really great trainer.  She is definitely motivating and also extremely fun.  Its a very chill, fun, and laid back atmosphere. This is the best gym I've ever attended.I've been a member and going regularly for almost a year and it's become a regular part of my life.Gio (the owner/trainer) is amazing and fosters a very refreshingly unique gym experience.   She challenges us without pushing us harder than our bodies go, while still providing amazing results.The people who come to Groundwork are all friend and help contribute to the friendly/family environment too.  I'm personally not fond of most gyms, I don't like a lot of the judgy, competitive atmospheres and that's why Groundworks is perfect for me.  I highly recommend this gym. This place is awesome. The location is great with lots of parking access. The gym itself is beautiful clean and new. The trainers are down to earth and helpful, but the owner is really a true gem. She is upbeat and positive, passionate about health and makes it a point to outreach to her community as much as she can. I recommend this place for personal training AND if you are a fitness or dance instructor, the space is rentable. Groundwork Fitness is great! Gio really knows her stuff, it's different then other gyms, she really focuses on customizing the workouts for each individual. Groundwork Fitness run by Giovanna Ferraro has been incredible. I started 2013 with a plan for change and Gio's Boot Camp and Personal Training came at the recommendation of friends who clearly have gotten great benefits from their work with her!  After just a few short weeks of working with her, I'm sure she'll get me to my goals and that I'll eventually be able to do the same for someone else.I ski, bike, surf and hike but Gio can still kick my butt with every work out all while keeping me motivated and educated to improve personally and reach my goals. She teaches me something new in every session and she is clearly self motivated to continue her own education as a fitness professional which she is eager to pass on to her clients.I happily give her 5 stars but will note I have no one to compare her to. That said, I see and hear from fellow clients how happy we all are so I believe she deserves it!  Boot Camp is a killer but it's often as much fun as it is work! More...

I started my relationship with Groundwork Fitness In January 2013 through an Amazon deal and can honestly say it is one of the best decisions I have made.  I was in the process of looking for a new workout program and for some reason, Groundwork Fitness caught my eye. I wanted a workout that would keep me excited, motivated, accountable and above all else, engaged.  The bootcamp classes are so well rounded and engaging that I never leave feeling unsatisfied or not challenged.  Giovanna Ferraro, Jay, and Victor are great trainers and always push you to work hard and do your best.  Everyone that comes to the classes are super friendly and very encouraging. Gio is the best, if you don't get motivated on working out, then I don't know who will!  I got the best deal from Amazon local for a month membership for a boot camp class, and that got me started on my goal!The class will kick your butt, if you're not in shape!  Which it did for me, but it gets you going, the more pain the better!  So far I've lost 20 lbs, but I think I would have lost more, my fat just converted to muscle and now I'm a little bit thinner and still working on my goal of 50 lbs less by the end of the year! Went to Gio's awesome bootcamp last weekend and literally had my Butt handed to me! I have not had a workout like that in years (since my training to be a wild land fire fighter) It felt so good when I was finished and I feel like i'm finally on the right track to getting into shape again, after my long stint of not working out. I have also been to other of her classes and one thing that really stands out to me is how involved she is with each and every person. She is very considerate of each persons workout and adjusts her classes to fit each person individually. She makes you feel as if her attention is only on you and gives  you the motivation to get through the workout and feel accomplished. Where do I start with Giovanna's boot camp classes? First off, I am one that has worked out in the gym for over 10 years, about 4-5 times a week.. and dreaded every part of it!!! This is the FIRST time in my LIFE I can say I actually look forward to working out! Her and her team are amazing, they are all well educated with the body and know how to challenge their clients. They are all super nice but firm and motivating. I was apprehensive to try out her classes bc I imagined boot camp classes with trainers yelling in my face and me running with tears down my face, however, I was completely wrong! My 3 friends and I bought an Amazon deal to try out her classes and we ALL ended up signing on after the two month trial. I also wanted to mention that never once were any of us ever pressured to signup, Gio is such a genuine person that wants to help out people that she isn't focused on the money but helping out her clients.Pros:- Everyday the exercises are different and it's a constant challenge (in a good way) which leads to positive results in losing weight/gaining muscle- The trainers are amazing, funny and very personable.- Time FLIESSSSSSS being there (and I have NEVER one said this about any class I've taken aside from hers)- Variety with outdoor/indoor training- Convenient times for classes and on Saturday too!- Big gym with plenty of space and equipmentCons:- A current trainer is leaving soon which I will be VERY SAD ABOUT :( however, she has found replacement that has begun training already and he's great soo I guess it's not too much of a con other than the fact that I will miss YOU MORGAN!!!I honestly cannot say enough good things about Gio and her team and hope that people will give it a chance, great environment and lots of fun. Lastly, I wanted to note that all types of people workout here (older, bigger, athletic, etc.) so you def don't need to be a crazy athlete or in shape to get through the work out.. and trust me I am seriously the most uncoordinated person there!!! :) More...

I found Gio through her great amazon locals deals.  Ive seen many deals on living social and group on, but Gio's was too good to pass up.  Before getting with Gio i had lost almost 100lbs on my own.  Being in the best shape of my life, i thought i would be able to hang in her boot camp classes with no problem, but boy was i wrong.  Her classes push and challenge you in a good way.  and are made for people wanting to get into shape, people that are in shape and everyone in between.  Her classes are fun, which keeps me coming back all the time.   Her energy is amazing and contagious.  She's able to push and motivate you without having that bossy, pushy attitude.  I have noticed great results working with her. She has taught me sooo much.  If you're looking for a personal trainer or a class to join i highly recommend Gio! More...

I have struggled with my weight since my teens. I have done everything from crash diets to the trendy work out DVDs to no avail. Having Gio as my trainer has been a life changing experience. Her energy is amazing and her ability to push and motivate people is incomparable. This is a great gym with a convenient location. All the trainers are amazing, and its not packed like a 24 hour. Ive been training here about 3 months and the results are great.

I met Giovanna two years ago but only recently decided to start training because I was starting to feel like I had no energy after work and just needed a change. I'm not a workout/gym person but training with Giovanna the past couple of months has been awesome. She's so motivating, supportive, and knowledgable.
